Mason, The Imprint and the Cranach Press', from N.S.A.E. Journal, laid in. Mason's long colophon records the book's complex gestation, delayed by his work at the Central School and Cranach Press. 'Later he was further hindered by cataract in both eyes and loss of sight... Intended as an example of book printing for the love of the work, for the printer and his friends', only c40 copies were bound up and distributed on publication. The remaining 90 resurfaced in sheets in the 1950s and were bound up in various styles. A fine example of Gribble's very individual style; 'of uncompromisingly strong black line...with the same quality of frozen action of figures on a Greek vase, which gives them a certain tension.' Engraved in 1916, this work should have launched her artistic career, but by the time it appeared at the Arts & Crafts Society exhibition of Nov.1935, Vivien Gribble had succumbed to cancer. hinge repaired, extremities a little rubbed but sound & attractive. Baskerville's only 12mo. Prayer Book, printed with the agreement of Cambridge University; the Sternhold Psalms was printed at Birmingham in the same year, presumably to accompany the BCP. Merivale Editions, 1988 45 FIRST EDITION, 500 copies printed, designed by Sebastan Carter; pp.(16); 15 full- and half-page illustrations of copper engravings produced by Bawden, 'principally for his friends', 1927-29. This pamphlet/prospectus was issued by Peter Sampson who published an edition of 40 copies of the series to celebrate E.B.'s 85th birthday. Now known to be by several authors in the style of Anacreon whose actual work survives in fragments only, the first Greek edition of 'Anacreon', appeared in 1554 and was the first publication of Robert's brother, Henri Estienne, under his own name. Its appearance 'virtually caused a poetic revolution, not only in France, but also in Italy and Germany (Schreiber). The Latin version by Elias Andreas first appeared in 1555. Though separately printed, these Robert Estienne editions are often found bound together. 30 EARLY PRINTING. LUCANUS, Marcus Annaeus. [Pharsalia.] Civilis Belli. [In ten books. Edited by Aldus Manutius] Venetiis in Aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Soceri Mense Iulio, 1515 750 160 x 90mm., 140 leaves including a1 fly title & s4 colophon with woodcut anchor device on verso. A handsome & characteristic production with spaced capital initial letters on each line, set in Griffo's revolutionary cursive letter which Manutius had introduced in 1501. Slight browning of first & final leaves and a few other minor marks, but well preserved in later (17thC?) vellum, yapp edges, with manuscript title at head of backstrip; old ms. note at head of endpaper, 'libro rare... stampato pochissime copie.' Arguably scarcer than the 1502 first Aldine edition of this epic poem. Based on Simon Bevilaqua's 1493 edition and edited by Aldus from Marc' Antonio Morosini's manuscript. New York born poet & long-time Communist, Lowenfels fled to Paris from the family business and started the Carrefour Press with Michael Fraenkel in 1930. The pamphlet 'Anonymous: The Need for Anonymity' set out their credo that anonymous publication was the only way to avoid artistic competition and alienation, and Lowenfels' play, USA with Music, was published anonymously by Carrefour. However a plagiarism suit brought by Lowenfels against George Gershwin in 1932 forced Carrefour and Lowenfels to reveal the author's identity and subsequent Carrefour titles identified the author.
