The Story of Aladdin Aladdin is one of our most popular and well known folk tales. The story can be traced back to the French translator Antoine Gelland who heard it from a storyteller from Aleppo, Syria and incorporated it into his book One thousand and one nights, published in 1710. The tale of Aladdin was first published in England between 1704 and 1714 and was first dramatised in 1788 at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. Since then, it has been performed on numerous occasions even being adapted for Bollywood. The tale was also turned into an animated feature by Walt Disney in 1992 for which it is probably best known. KYDS are very grateful to Wilkin and Sons Limited for their generous sponsorship of this performance.

From the Director It was on the 21 st and 22 nd May this year that we put on our last production. That was the very successful Sweeney Todd Shock n Roll Show. No sooner had that show finished and we were making preparations for the next show and eventually we decided on a pantomime Aladdin. So in early June this year we got the scripts, held casting meetings and eventually drew up a rehearsal schedule. Obviously, with youngsters, it is not easy to get all the cast together all the time, and so many parts had to be read in by others. This however, is all useful experience for the budding actor. Next job was to select the songs that we were going to sing, bearing in mind that they are not a choir. After that came the dance routines, and what a job that is. With Danni s and Aaron s help and patience we gradually got to the stage where they more or less knew what they were doing. You will be the judge of that! Over the summer months we obviously have to take a break from rehearsals. So we send them off with their scripts and ask them to try and learn their lines. Come September and back they come and nobody knows a thing. Ah, well! So off we go again and gradually things do begin to take shape. It is always unbelievable to me how, amid the chatting, scrapping playing with phones, etc., that it all comes together as a cohesive whole. But sure enough it does - he said hopefully! So here we are. The rehearsals are finished, the costumes acquired, the lines (sort of) learnt and the audience is seated. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this performance of Aladdin as much as we the directors have enjoyed doing our bit. They are a great bunch of kids! Well done all! Finally may I say a sincere and undying thanks to Wilkin and Sons for their generous promise of support for this production. Without it we may not have been able to stage this pantomime.
