0800 Intermediate Level Concert Band: White & Purple Bands (MHS) Intermediate Level Concert Band: Band 9 (NHS) Credit: 1.0 Grade 9 Previous band, orchestra or piano experience is required. studied includes marches, overtures, contest repertoire and show tunes. Class includes sectionals, ensembles and full band instruction with several concert performances throughout the year including parades, pep band and festivals. A trip is offered each spring along with other special activities. 0802 Intermediate Level Concert Band: Eagle Band (MHS only) This band performs in several concerts and one contest each year. It also performs at such events as home football games and parades. Members of this group also perform in one of the pep bands for winter sports. Emphasis is on the symphonic band repertoire. 0804 Intermediate/Advanced Level Concert Band: Concert Band (MHS) Intermediate/Advanced Level Concert Band: Varsity Band (NHS) Qualification through spring auditions This band performs in several concerts and one contest each year. It also performs at all home football games and the Memorial Day Parade. Members of this group also perform in one of the pep bands for winter sports. Members of this group will be selected by audition. Emphasis is on the symphonic band repertoire. 0806 Advanced Level Concert Band: Old Abe Wind Ensemble (MHS) Advanced Level Concert Band: Wind Ensemble (NHS) Qualification through spring auditions This band performs in several concerts and one contest each year. Emphasis is on the symphonic band repertoire. 0808 Intermediate Level Jazz: Jazz III (MHS) Intermediate Level Jazz: Jazz II (NHS) Concurrent Enrollment: Band or Orchestra Credit: 0.5 Grades 9-10 MHS Grades 9 NHS This course provides a foundation for the young jazz student. The students will be introduced to a variety of jazz styles, including the blues, Latin and swing. Beginning improvisation will be taught, with emphasis on the blues and modal jazz. Performances will include fall and spring concerts, and at least one jazz festival appearance. This course meets everyday for one semester at North and on alternating days for 0.5 credit at Memorial. 63

0810 Intermediate/Advanced Level Jazz: Jazz II (MHS only) Credit: 0.5 Grades 10-12 Concurrent Enrollment: Band or Orchestra (with the exception of the guitar) This course continues the development of the jazz student. Students will continue to develop skills relating to a wide variety of jazz styles, including such composers as Ellington, Basie, Nestico and so on. Intermediate improvisation skills will be taught using modes, bebop techniques and transcriptions. Performances will include several concerts and festivals. Placement is determined through audition process. This course will meet on alternating days opposite a study hall for the entire year. 0812 Advanced Level Jazz: Jazz I Concurrent Enrollment: Band o r Orchestra (with the exception of the guitar) This course is for the advanced jazz student. Focus is on quality jazz literature, including Ellington, Mingus, Thad Jones, Basie, Nestico and so on. Advanced improvisation skills will be developed in all styles. Performances will include many local, regional and possibly national concerts/festivals/venues. Placement is determined through audition process. 0814 Advanced Level Orchestra: Chamber Orchestra (Memorial only) Credit: 0.5 Grades 9-12 Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Entry Level Orchestra: Freshman or Symphony Orchestra This is a class for string students in the 9-12th grades. Students will explore and perform different styles of music through performance, composition and improvisation. Members of this group are selected through audition. 0816 Entry Level Orchestra: Freshman (Memorial only) Credit: 0.5 Grades 9-12 This entry level orchestra is designed for freshman string students. Upper classmen with no string experience may also join this group. 0818 Symphony Orchestra Credit: 1.0 Grades 9-12 Our repertoire includes string and full orchestra music (music played with winds and percussion players). There are annual fall and spring concerts as well as social events and special activities. Students will perform a variety of styles of music while developing their playing techniques and orchestral playing skills. 0820 Entry Level Choir: Men of Memorial & Treble Choir (MHS) Freshman Choir (NHS) Credit: 1.0 Grades 9-12 MHS Grade 9 NHS As its name implies, this choir is made up primarily of freshmen who desire a large group singing experience. Some upper and/or lower classmen may be assigned to this choir as needs arise. At Memorial High School, the choirs are split into men's and women's glee clubs. At North High School, this ensemble is a mixed choral group. These choirs will perform at concerts, contests, and community events. See instructors for details. 0822 Intermediate Level Choir: Mixed Choir (MHS only) As its name implies, this choir is made up primarily of sophomores who desire a large group singing experience. Some students in grades above or below may be assigned to this choir as needs arise. These choirs will perform at concerts, contests, and community events. See instructors for details. 64

0824 Advanced Level Choir: Concert Choir (MHS) Concert Choir (NHS) Credit: 1.0 Grades 11-12 MHS Grades 10-12 NHS As its name implies, this choir is made up primarily of juniors and seniors who desire a large group singing experience. Some freshmen or sophomores may be assigned to this choir as needs arise. These choirs will perform at concerts, contests, and community events. See instructors for details. 0826 Intermediate Level Show Choir: Eagle Show Choir (MHS) (Early Bird at Memorial) North Singers (NHS) Credit: 1.0 NHS Grades 10-12 MHS Memorial: Concurrent Enrollment: Mixed Choir. Membership at Memorial is determined by audition and/or consent of instructor. These choirs provide a foundation for the beginning and intermediate show choir student. These ensembles emphasize singing and dancing. al styles are of the popular genre. These groups perform at concerts, contests and exhibitions. This course is offered every day for 1 credit at North and on alternating days for 0.5 credit at Memorial. Members are expected to purchase the group uniforms. 0828 Advanced Show Choir: Old Abe Show Choir (MHS) Advanced Show Choir: Northernaires (NHS) Credit: 1.0 NHS Grades 10-12 MHS Concurrent Membership in Mixed o r Concert Choir AND Concurrent Membership in Madrigals. Membership is determined by audition and/or consent of instructor. These courses are for the advanced show choir student. These show choirs at each high school function as high energy, entertainment style performing groups. They are auditioned ensembles with an emphasis on signing and dancing. al styles tend to be of the popular genre. Prior dance experience is desired but not required for membership. These groups perform at concerts, contests, exhibitions and at community functions. This course is offered every day for 1 credit at North and on alternating days for 0.5 credit at Memorial. Members are expected to purchase the group uniforms. 0830 Advanced Vocal Jazz: Madrigals (MHS) Advanced Vocal Jazz: Casual Jazz (NHS) Concurrent Enrollment: Memorial - Concert Choir and Old Abe Show Choir. Membership is determined by audition and/or consent of instructor. Credit:1.0 NHS Grades 11-12 MHS These groups focus on a particular genre of music, unique to each ensemble in each school. Madrigals perform music of the 14th-18th centuries in the Madrigal style. They also perform music in the popular era, in the vocal jazz style. Casual Jazz performs music from the 1920's-1990's in the vocal jazz style. Many different composers and arrangers are explored in each group, with the emphasis being on the different nuances particular to each era. Membership is determined by audition and/or consent of the instructor. These groups perform at concerts, contests, exhibitions, and community events. This course meets in the evenings 3 days per week at North for 1.0 credit. See instructors for details. Members are expected to purchase the group uniforms. 832 Theory Semester Credit: 0.5 Grades 10-12 Techniques learned in this class are applied to actual compositions, arrangements and improvisation. This class is recommended for all students interested in music, especially for those planning to study music on a post high school level. Opportunity will be provided for computer-based composition, arranging, and ear training. 65
