Sign up Instructions for Applied Music and Solo Performance Courses* If you are beginning lessons at Hamilton (whether or not you have studied the instrument before) you will need to complete and submit the following: 1. A class schedule (please include locations of classes, work/study and all other commitments). 2. A music questionnaire (separate from this packet). 3. A signed contract. If you are in your first semester of study at Hamilton, you may drop lessons prior to the second scheduled lesson. If you sign and submit a Drop Contract form and Course Drop form prior to the second scheduled lesson, you will only be financially responsible for the first lesson taken rather than the full amount of the signed contract. 4. A Course Change Form is needed if you are taking the lessons for credit. The form must be returned to Kim Carroll (List 217) and does not require any signatures. If you are continuing private music lessons at Hamilton College (either in Applied Music, Solo Performance, or Advanced Solo Performance) you will need to complete and submit the following: 1. Your advisor/instructor does not need to sign your Course Change Form Half-hour lessons are worth ¼ credit (APP. MUSIC 36-125) and 1-hour lessons are worth ½ credit (MUSIC 36-126, given only with consent of the instructor). Applied Music courses are graded U or S; Solo Performance and Advanced Solo Performance students receive a letter grade and must perform in some kind of public performance during the semester. *SENIORS may begin lessons at the applied music level for a half hour, ¼ credit. Seniors who wish to begin lessons at the applied music level for a full hour, ½ credit, may do so with the consent of the studio instructor. Students who wish to audit lessons may do so with the consent of the studio instructor. Information and Guidelines for Instruction in Applied Music, Solo Performance, & Advanced Solo Performance As private study in voice or an instrument, like all music courses offered at Hamilton, has as a primary goal the development of musicianship in the classic and jazz traditions, students will explore repertory from various style periods. Matters such as performance practice, form, and analysis will be considered in the preparation of any work studied. As an aid to gaining understanding, students are urged to take concurrent courses in theory or history during their first year of instruction. Specific pre- and co-requisites are included in the individual course descriptions. All courses have a concert attendance requirement, and Solo Performance and Advanced Solo Performance courses include in each semester the presentation of a public performance either as a soloist or as a major soloist in an ensemble performance. A course comprises either eleven half-hour lessons per term, which will earn one-quarter course credit (Mus 125, 225); or eleven hour lessons, which will earn one-half course credit (Mus 126, 226, 326). The fee for one term of half-hour lessons is $330.00; for one term of hour lessons, $660.00. This amount is in addition to regular College fees and tuition. Financial assistance may be available to those who receive financial aid from the college. REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLIED MUSIC APPLIED MUSIC is a preparatory course for which a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grade is given and no defined level of expertise or performance is required, with the exception that the ability to match pitch is a prerequisite for the study of voice. A. Mus 125: ½ hour lessons for ¼ credit. B. Mus 126: 1 hour lessons for ½ credit. C. Graded S/U (Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory). D. Students are encouraged to move to Solo Performance when they are ready, in consultation with their instructor. E. New Applied Music students whose skill level is determined by the instructor to be ready for Solo Performance may change their enrollment to Solo Performance any time prior to the 4th lesson of the semester. F. Applied Music students are subject to the following limitations: 1. Applied Music students are not eligible for professional accompanist. 2. Applied Music students may not audition for the Student Concert. 3. Applied Music students are not guaranteed a performance slot on the weekday musicales. REQUIREMENTS FOR SOLO PERFORMANCE SOLO PERFORMANCE is a college level course for which a letter grade and a defined level of expertise and a certain number of performances are required. A. Mus 225: ½ hour lessons for ¼ credit. B. Mus 226: 1 hour lessons for ½ credit. C. Students must be performing at an intermediate level. D. Letter grade given. E. Public performance required. F. Mus 110 (Music Theory for Non-Majors) or Music 210 (Fundamentals and Chromatic Harmony) must be taken WITHIN the first 3 semesters of Solo Performance study. Students may place out of Mus 110 by passing the Music Theory Placement Exam. G. Consent of Instructor required. H. Solo Performance students may revert to an Applied Music course at any time. REQUIREMENTS FOR ADVANCED SOLO PERFORMANCE ADVANCED SOLO PERFORMANCE is for students performing at an advanced level and preparing for a half or full recital that is approved by the Music Department and scheduled on the official dept. calendar. A. Mus 326: 1 hour lessons for ½ credit. B. Students must be performing at an advanced level and in preparation for a half or full recital that is approved by the Music Department and scheduled on the official Department calendar. C. Letter grade given. D. Public performance required. E. Students in Advanced Solo Performance must either have completed or co-register for Mus 110 or 210, or pass the Music Theory Placement Exam. Successful appearance on a) two Student Concerts or b) one Student Concert and a major soloist role with an ensemble or c) one Student Concert and a List Musicale is required. F. Consent of Instructor required.
Evaluations for all Private Instruction in Music is based on the following: 1. Improvement in a) technique, b) musicianship, c) performance. 2. Preparation of lesson material: Your instructor will discuss with you the repertoire to be covered during the semester. As the study of any musical instrument requires consistent practice, you are expected to practice at least 5 out of the 7 days between lessons for the length of time of the lesson. Because learning music is a cumulative process, an unprepared lesson may be treated as an unexcused absence. 3. Lesson attendance: Weekly attendance is required unless other arrangements are made. unexcused absences will result in a midterm warning being sent out. unexcused absences will result in failure of the course. Concert Attendance: a) Students taking one-hour lessons will be required to attend 5 concerts in which the student is not performing, per semester, one of which must be the Student Concert. b) Students taking half-hour lessons will be required to attend three concerts in which the student is not performing, per semester, one of which must be the Student Concert. c) Students may also be required to attend other master classes of performances at the discretion of the studio teacher. d) Failure to meet this requirement will result in grade reduction determined in the following manner: Each regular concert missed by a student who receives a letter grade will reduce the final grade by one notch. For example: a student who has a grade of B and misses one concert will receive a grade of B-. If a student misses three concerts, the grade will be reduced to C. The grade of a student who misses the mandatory Student Concert will be reduced by one full letter grade. For example: a student who has a grade of B and misses the Student Concert will receive a C. Faculty members will grade applied students the same way they grade those who receive a letter grade. If after factoring in the per-concertmissed grade reduction, the grade is less than C-, then the student will receive an automatic U. A student who misses all the required concerts will automatically fail the course. 5. As with any college course, students are expected to purchase any necessary materials for this course. Your instructor can advise you how best to do this. Individual instructors may expect the student to fulfill additional requirements.
Spring 2019 CONCERT ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT Concert attendance is taken only by submitting your photo ID card to attendants who are present for every qualifying concert. You are responsible for handing in YOUR OWN ID card at the beginning of the performance. If you arrive late or leave early, you will NOT be given attendance credit. You must then pick up your ID card after the performance in order to receive credit. An ID card will not be returned to anyone other than the person to whom it belongs. No exceptions are made to this attendance-taking procedure. Leaving a concert early and returning to pick up an ID following the concert is considered a violation of the honor code and will be reported as such. If you are receiving a Music Department stipend for private instruction in music, you will not be billed for eleven half-hour lessons ($330.00). Stipends are only given to students who are receiving credit for their lessons. Students who break their contract, who drop lessons for credit, or who otherwise do not ultimately receive credit for the course will forfeit their stipend(s) and any financial aid that had been applied and will be billed for the total amount of their lesson fees. This contract is for the extra fee for music instruction, and applies whether you are registered to receive credit or not. Students taking for credit are reminded that they must abide by the conditions of the course as stated in Information for Courses in Applied Music and Solo Performance, a document available from the Music Department Office in List 217.
