Loupes & Tweezers March 2015 Page 3 A Notion on Knowledge by Billy Best As Technicians in the horological world, some of us are lucky to work with others that want the same results. When issues rear their heads, two minds work very well. Ideas bounce off each other and more times than not, solutions are found quickly. I still consult my good friend, even though we do not work in the same store anymore. We always seem to get the repair to work after just a few minutes of conversation. For the solo technician, sometimes an evening is needed for ideas to gel. When a problem arises in the evening, the best thing is to put it down. Soldiering on while in a state of evening fatigue will result in a worse situation than originally discovered. When this technique works, I usually mention, What a difference a day makes, after a successful repair. Unfortunately, after a time, repair solutions run in circles, with the notion, Well, it might work this time if I try it again. These efforts are somewhat perilous, even with references available. Service is always evolving and new ways to repair are not always available to a lone watchmaker or clockmaker who stays in his shop. You cannot wait for these procedures to come to you, You must seek them out. The best way I know of is continuing education. Annual classes will keep you abreast of new ways to solve old problems. Our organization, the Horological Association of Virginia is known as a very active chapter in the United States. The main purpose of our state organization is to present annual events to promote the continuing improvement of our repair personnel. Not only is it good for lone watchmaker, it is good for the clock shop with two or three repair people. Dressing up for Friday night cocktails and hors d oeuvres is only the prelude for programs to follow the next day. Saturday will be filled with new repair techniques, procedures, and references to keep the savvy repair person acquainted with the latest developments in our respective fields. Saturday evening will start up again to discuss what you have learned, before supper at the formal banquet. After dinner you will be treated to an auction with various types of equipment, watches, clocks, and all manner of material. Sunday morning the last of the technical programs and lectures will be presented. While you pack up your automobile or start your trip to the airport, these new ideas should swim around the brain. When your shop opens, the things you learned will be fresh and so will be the conversations with your peers. Sometimes it takes a while for you to work them in to you daily schedule, and it seems like they will delay the regular workings of your shop. When given time to slightly change the way you work, the new tools you use, and the extra care used when these techniques are put into your repairs, will pay for themselves in a few days. The syndrome is called Bench Burnout, and we all get it from time to time. The solution to it is to first get out of town, go see your buddies have some fun and learn something new in the field. Always choose the most difficult programs offered and always make sure you are in the hands on if available. Lectures are good, but working with professionals who have access to the latest equipment and answers to eternal problems is invaluable. So pack up, journey out of town, find your friends. We will be waiting for you.

Loupes & Tweezers March 2015 Page 8 STAN PALEN S Komputer Korner This column includes hints, helps, suggestions and news for IBM compatible computers. MICROSOFT Microsoft s operating systems have been growing a lot with each new version.. Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be much smaller in size than Windows 8. TURBOTAX It is tax time and I am working on my taxes with TurboTax. If you bought TurboTax and it says it needs an upgrade to higher level package, go ahead and do it because it is free. They originally wanted to charge for the more sophisticated package, but there was such an uproar they changed their plans. I have some stock and TurboTax imported the information and created the forms it needed. I have been using it for years. There are several other tax programs out there that make doing your taxes much easier. APPLE NEWS Apple just pushed out a change to battery life. their operating systems for their iphones and ipads. It includes an icon for apple watch. I guess they want you to get the watch to go along with it. The watch seems to have a limited Apple has started using the new USB 3 on some of its products. One feature of the new USB is two way communication. This includes telling one device to use its battery to charge up the other device or vice versa. PRINTER - FIX, REFURBISH, NEW? I have been having problems with my color laser printer for a while. All of the suggested simple fixes I found online did not work. The nearest repair facility for HP printer is almost 100 miles away. With the cost of two trips in time and money plus the repair costs, I decided to go the refurbished route. I found one on line, but there was a bit of bait and switch. The refurbished one with shipping and everything would cost almost as much as it did originally. They offered a used machine at a reasonable cost. The used one did have a few issues, but worked well enough for me to be comfortable with taking my old one apart based on a Utube video

Loupes & Tweezers March 2015 Page 9 Stan s Komputers (cont) I found on the procedure. After lots and lots of screws, lots of ribbon cables and lots of cleaning later, I got it back together and working well. Now I have two and the company is replacing the one that is not working as well as it should be. They have not said if I need to send that one back. I may wind up with three. Then I will have lots of spare parts. NEW COMPUTER PROBLEMS Most new computers these days are shipped without a disk to restore your operating system if you have problems. Usually there is a small partition on your hard drive that shows up as a separate drive with the restore files. Sometimes this may not work or the hard drive has gone bad. Microsoft used to have a few paths to download these files, but there was added cost. Microsoft has created a path that is free, but might be a bit complicated. I have the directions in a paid subscription newsletter I get, so I cannot detail it here. If you email me, I can send you the directions. The most critical thing you need is your product key. There are several programs to find your product keys if you do not have them. STERJO key finder is one of them. So far this is only for operating systems, not for other Microsoft products. This will not be for upgrading your operating system like from Windows 7 to Windows 7 Professional. BLACKBERRY??? Blackberry is trying to get back into the black with a new SECURE tablet. If you are worried about security, it might be the way to go. The price is in the $2000 range, so they will have a limited audience I think. The have collaborated with both IBM and Samsung on the project. Hopefully for them it be a product in demand, especially for government and commercial companies. GOOGLE GLASS??? Remember Google Glass? The company says the available model is only a prototype or something not ready for distribution to consumers. They have apparently reduced the sales outlets and are not selling to individuals. They are coming out with a new version with many improvements. Contact Stan: 540.775.7027 spalen@crosslink.net
