Tel-Quip PH: 713-728-0625; FAX: 713-456-2512 www.telquip.com INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 10-17-2013 WIRED REMOTE CONTROL USING COAX CABLE U-WRC-C Thank you for using the Tel-Quip Wired Remote Control. This Non-Controlled document describes the recommended procedure for installing Wired Remote Controls using Twisted Pair Cable. This unit is designed to provide a means for a remote control to be mounted on a piece of exercise gear. If you have not already done so, please refer to the Coax System Pre-Installation Checklist Throughout this document there are references and pictures referring to AT&T Uverse service, however these instructions also relate to installations with other service providers that are digital, such as Comcast Infinity, and Verizon FiOS. Please use the comparable term from the service provider as applicable, for example a set top box may be referred to as a cable box. Please refer to the diagram at the end of this document. 1. Overview a. The Tel-Quip WRC-U Wired Remote Control enables an Original Equipment remote control which has been altered to communicate with a Set-Top Box up to 200 away. The remote control has had the IR emitter and batteries removed. The coax cable transports the RF signal from the Set Top Box to the Remote Control. The Cat 5 cable transports the IR information from the Remote Control to the Set Top Box. For more information, consult the schematic in the Installation Instructions 2. Recommended Tools a. Label Maker b. Flat Head and Phillips Screw Driver c. Telecom Snips or similar diagonal cutters. d. Cable Identification Tool such as Tone and Probe.

e. Tools for terminating coaxial cables. (Optional, premade patch cables can be purchased, see below) 3. Recommended Supplies a. Multi-Outlet Power Strip with ON/OFF switch. There should be enough outlets to accommodate all the Set-Top Boxes and Residential Gateways. b. Heavy Duty Velcro (Approximately 6 per cardio machine) c. 12 or longer Cable Ties (2-3 per cardio machine) d. 6 Cable Ties for dressing wire (Usually 2-4 per cardio machine, though you may use more) e. 3 RG-6 Coax Jumper for attaching Treadmills to Coax Drop. This assumes the machine is connecting to a coax drop in a floor box immediately beside it. Longer jumpers may be required if the drops are in wallplates. f. 1 RG-6 Coax Jumper for attaching all other cardio machines to Coax Drop. This assumes the machine is connecting to a coax drop in a floor box immediately beside it. Longer jumpers may be required if the drops are in wallplates. g. Coax Jumpers may be required to connect the Set Top Boxes to the Drop in the Telecommunications Room. Their length will need to be determined at the time of installation. h. Cat 5 (or Cat 6) Jumpers may be required at either end of the drop. Normally, a 3 jumper will be adequate. However, this will need to be determined at the time of installation. For this application, using 8 wire couplers (also known as feed throughs ) is permissible. i. Black Electrical Tape j. Optional instructions to perform Autoscan for detecting channels shown on cardio equipment display; provided by installer. 4. Open the box of material and inspect for completeness. Each unit should include a. Wired Remote Control, one per cardio equipment, type depending upon service provider. Uverse example shown at right. b. One interface box for the Fitness Center (WRC-C-1) c. One interface box for the Telecommunications Room (WRC-C-2) d. One 3.3V Power Adapter e. One Infrared Emitter Cable 5. If not already done, check the Coax Drop Cable (6) for continuity. Ensure that cables are in close proximity to the area set aside for the Set Top Boxes (10). 6. Please see pictures below for shelf and wall mounting. Screws for wall mounting are not included. A dedicated multi-outlet power strip should be used to provide power to all the boxes. If you must use more than one strip, at least insure that all the Set Top Boxes are plugged into a single box. During trouble shooting, it is sometimes necessary to remove the power from the boxes. Use the label maker to mark the multi-outlet power strip with Power for AT&T Set Top Boxes Only.

a. b. 7. Use a Coax Patch Cable(9) to connect each Set Top Box (10) to the WRC-C-2 (7)on the port labeled Set Top Box 8. Connect the WRC-C-2(7) box to the drop cable via the port labeled Drop. This may or may not require a patch cable. 9. Plug an IR Emitter Cable (7) into the IR Jack on each WRC-U. Attach each IR Emitter in front of the IR Sensor on each Set Top Box. Use black electrician s tape or purpose build covers to secure the IR eyes to the set top boxes. Test to ensure that the remote changes only the box to which it is attached. If you are unsure as to the location of the IR Sensor, a little

experimentation should help you locate it. For Uverse Set Top Boxes (shown at right), and if Wake Up Sticks (white USB attachments) are used, the IR Emitter attachment should not cover the entire IR Sensor, instead over to the side as shown in the picture. Taping over the entire IR Sensor negates the operation of the Wake Up Stick. 10. Connect the TV (1) to the WRC-C-1 (4). An example of a finished install is below. A better installation will locate the WRC-C-1 on a wall next to the machine if possible, due to potential vibrations of the cardio equipment causing the unit to become unattached. a. 11. Plug the power supply into the outlet, and cord into appropriate connector on the WRC- C-1. 12. Make sure each TV is receiving signal. If not already done, mark both ends of the drop. 13. Plug the Wired Remote Control (2) into the Remote port of the WRC-C-1 (4). Use Velcro to place in a location easy to reach, however does not hinder operation. See examples below. Do not yet secure it to the Cardio Machine. 14. Insure that each remote is controlling the machine to which it is attached. If is not, alter cable markings. 15. Attach the cables to the cardio machines with cable ties and straps. Make the installation as neat as possible. REMEMBER, TREADMILLS MOVE UP AND DOWN. ALLOW FOR A SLACK LOOP TO ACCOMMODATE THIS MOVEMENT.

a. 16. Velcro or Cable Tie the WRC-C-1 boxes its piece of equipment. For treadmills, ensure that the treadmill will not crush the power supplies as it moves up and down. 17. Use black electrician s tape or purpose build covers to secure the IR eyes to the set top boxes. Test to ensure that the remote changes only the box to which it is attached. 18. Disable controls on the cardio gear if possible, leaving the user the ability to only access channel 3. If possible, the preferred method is to manually add only channel 3 instead of conducting an autoscan, An autoscan will occasionally detect UHF broadcast signals, received through the coax wire acting as an antenna. These are usually weak, variable signals and will add confusion to the user. 19. Secure loose cables and leave the installation looking neater than you found it. 20. Label each machine with USE REMOTE ONLY TO CHANGE CHANNELS 21. Label each Set Top Box in such a way that it identifies the Cardio Machine to which it is attached. COMMON TROUBLE SHOOTING 1. I m not getting a picture. This is defined as a completely black screen or complete snow. a. Check to see if the TV is set to Channel 3. b. Use a separate monitor to attach directly to the Set Top Box. If picture is produced on the monitor, then either the drop isn t working or the Set Top Box is attached to the wrong drop. Check continuity to ensure connection to the correct drop and that it is continuous.

c. Also try turning off the multi-outlet strip servicing the Set-Top Boxes. Also, try to unplug the power from the Fitness Machine TV and replug to see if the picture comes back. 2. The picture is really bad. a. Check to see that the TV is set to Channel 3. Occasionally, the TV s will pick up the transmission on other channels. However, these pictures will be far inferior to Channel 3. If on channel 3 you will most likely need a service call to troubleshoot the issue. b. Check that all the RG-6 F connectors are tight. If this fails to solve the problem, then remove and inspect connectors for proper termination. Re-terminate if necessary. 3. The remote is not changing the channel a. The first reason this may be happening is that power is not reaching the remote. Press any button on the remote. If the buttons glow for a few seconds, then the remote is receiving power. If the buttons don t glow, then check the power connections on the WRC-C-1 box. b. The second reason the remote doesn t work is because IR isn t reaching the set top box. First, make sure the IR cable is properly seated in the IR connector on the WRC-U box. Second, make sure the IR emitter eye is attached to the correct Set Top Box and in the correct location on the face of the Set Top Box. 4. The Remote is receiving power and the Channel UP and DOWN buttons work, but nothing else does. a. Occasionally, the remote will get set to control another device. Press the AT&T button on the remote. 5. There is no sound a. Set the volume on the Fitness TV at approximately 75% of full volume.. The Volume UP and DOWN button on the U-verse remote should then control the volume. 6. One remote changes the channel on more than 1 machine. Be sure that ONLY black electrical tape was used to cover the IR eye COMPLETELY when attached to each receiver or it will bleed over and control nearby receivers.
