H S850/76/0 National Quali cations SPECIMEN ONLY Music Marking Instructions These marking instructions have been provided to show how SQA would mark this specimen question paper. The information in this publication may be reproduced to support SQA qualifications only on a non-commercial basis. If it is to be used for any other purpose, written permission must be obtained from SQA s Marketing team on permissions@sqa.org.uk. Where the publication includes materials from sources other than SQA (ie secondary copyright), this material should only be reproduced for the purposes of examination or assessment. If it needs to be reproduced for any other purpose it is the user s responsibility to obtain the necessary copyright clearance.

General marking principles for Higher Music Always apply these general principles. Use them in conjunction with the detailed marking instructions, which identify the key features required in candidates responses. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Always use positive marking. This means candidates accumulate marks for the demonstration of relevant skills, knowledge and understanding; marks are not deducted for errors or omissions. If a specific candidate response does not seem to be covered by either the principles or detailed marking instructions, and you are uncertain how to assess it, you must seek guidance from your team leader. Use your professional judgement when candidates responses do not exactly match marking instructions but carry the same meaning, for example plagal cadence/iv I, plainchant/plainsong. Do not accept any answer that is not in the marking instructions. Multiple-choice questions ask candidates to tick one or more boxes. Accept a cross or any other sign which makes the candidate s intentions clear. Where candidates are asked to identify a number of answers from a list of options, and they identify more answers than required: award marks according to the detailed marking instructions for that question. page 02
