When we are young it feels like everything exists in binary. We are either joyously in love or painfully miserable. We can feel rage and love in the same emo onally charged breath. I think this is especially true for young ar sts. Perhaps what helps us mature into adulthood is the ability to find a balance somewhere in the middle away from the margins. Our modern day rendi on of American Idiot is definitely a musical for those that live on the margins. Powered by Green Day s rock concept album of the same tle, this musical is a rallying cry for young people who feel disenfranchised and powerless in a world bombarded by media, violence, and controversy. Yet in a world surrounded by chaos, it has become clear to me, as each day passed during our rehearsals, that if one is to yearn for consonance, one must accept and move through the dissonance. We need the darkness so we appreciate how incredibly lucky we are to see the light. As ar sts, it is our purpose to pursue truth no ma er the cost. We disdain idleness and are unafraid to speak our minds. Armed with an unrelen ng desire to create beauty in chaos, we trudge forward and reveal what is darkest and most light in our humanity. Thanks as always to Kirk Domer and the Department of Theatre for their amazing support. This show is bi erly/sweetly dedicated to the numerous gradua ng seniors and graduate students who are about to embark on their own beau fully chao c travels.
