LESSON 1: ここ そこ あそこ どこ PAGE 2 ここ そこ あそこ どこ form the basis of, and they indicate places. As they are places, they are nouns and they fit into any sentences you would normally use any other place nouns. Here we have a few various sentences containing place nouns. わしほんよ私はレストランで本を読みます わしあし私は明日レストランに行きます レストランはきれです I read books at the restaurant. I go to the restaurant tomorrow. The restaurant is clean. ちじ *Notes on N (Time) に : We use に for specific time such as One o clock ( 一時 ) whereas we あし omit に when time is general such as Tomorrow ( 明日 ) as seen in the example. We simply insert ここ そこ あそこ as though they are place nouns (in fact, they are place nouns). わしほんよ私はここで本を読みます わしあし私は明日そこに行きます あそこはきれです I read books here. I go there tomorrow. Over there is clean. For questions, we simply insert どこ again as though they are place nouns. ほんよあなはどこで本を読みますか あしあなは明日どこに行きますか どこがきれですか Where do you read books? Where do you go tomorrow? Where is clean? *Notes on the topic of this sentence: In other examples, we are not replacing the topics with どこ, but in this sentence, the topic is replaced. The topic, however, cannot be replaced with Where because the place is unknown to us. Therefore, the particle becomes が Subject) instead of は (Topic).

LESSON 2: これ それ あれ どれ PAGE 4 In the previous lesson, I have stated that the place indicators ここ そこ あそこ どこ form the basis of. As you will see, all things other than places can be identified with これ それ あれ どれ based on where they are. For instance, a pencil here is これ (This one here), a pencil there is それ (That one there), and a pencil over there is あれ (That one over there). It can literary be anything small (eg. a cell) or big (eg. a planet). Note that, just like English (or any other languages I hope), we don t use them for people. Here we have a few various sentences containing nouns. I have varied the sentences from Lesson 1 to include Things in the sentences. わしほんよ私はレストランで本を読みます わしくるま私は車でレストランに行きます レストランはコーヒーがおしです I read a book at the restaurant. I go to the restaurant by car. As for the restaurant, the coffee is tasty. We simply insert これ それ あれ as though they are nouns (in fact, they are nouns). わしよ私はレストランでこれを読みます わしあし私は明日それでレストランに行きます レストランはあれがおしです I read this one here at the restaurant. I go to the restaurant by that one there tomorrow. As for the restaurant, that one over there is tasty. For questions, we simply insert どれ again as though they are nouns. よあなはレストランでどれを読みますか あなはどれでレストランに行きますか レストランはどれがおしですか Which one do you read at the restaurant? By which one do you go the restaurant? As for the restaurant, which one is tasty?

LESSON 3: この その あの どの PAGE 6 この その あの どの is derived from ここの そこの あそこの どこの. In other words, この その あの どの simply means Of here Of there Of over there Of where. Accordingly, このペン means Pen of here, i.e. This pen here. In a way, we are specifying nouns according to their location. In Lesson 2, those nouns weren t specified. この その あの どの must be accompanied with nouns (eg. pen). これ This one here このペン This pen here それ That one there そのペン That pen there あれ That one over there あのペン That pen over there どれ Which one どのペン Which pen I am using the exactly the same sentences as Lesson 2, so we can see the differences between これ (Unspecified noun) and この (Nouns must be specified). We simply accompany この その あの to the nouns to modify them to show their locations. わしほんよ私はレストランで本を読みます わしくるま私は車でレストランに行きます レストランはコーヒーがおしです I read books at the restaurant. I go to the restaurant by car. As for the restaurant, the coffee is tasty. わしよ私はレストランでこれを読みます わしほんよ私はレストランでこの本を読みます わしあし私は明日それでレストランに行きます I read these ones here at the restaurant.
