Statement of Purpose Performing, creating, and responding to music are the fundamental music processes in which humans engage. s learn by doing. Singing, playing instruments, moving to music and creating music enable them to acquire musical skills and knowledge that can be developed in no other way. Music gives students skills with which to explore music alone and with others. Learning to read and notate music, and listening to, analyzing and evaluating music are important building blocks of musical learning. To participate fully in a diverse, global society, students must understand their own historical and cultural heritage and those of others within their communities and beyond. Because music is a basic expression of human culture, every student should have access to a balanced, comprehensive, and sequential program of study in music. Research has shown that students who participate in an enriched, sequential, skill building music program dramatically increase their reading and math performance. Music should be part of a well-rounded education. The role that music will play in students' lives depends in large measure on the level of skills they achieve in creating, performing, and listening to music. 3

Field Trip Experiences Music involves both an individual and group experience. s in music class learn to work together as a group, while at the same time develop their individual talents and interests. Field trips provide group opportunities, while also allowing the individual student to seek out those areas that interest him or her. Every field trip will give the students an aesthetic experience. Aesthetics is a main component of the music experience and curriculum. Cross Curricular Support In music students study a variety of units which support content areas in the curriculum. Children in K-1-2 learn to read music and rhythms, which enhances their reading and language literature skills. s in grades 3-8 use their reading skills when learning or singing a new song. Music is math -based, with note and rest values having fractional relationships. Understanding note and rest values will encourage the students understanding of fractions. Music is often studied from a historical or cultural perspective. s learn to understand how music reflects the lifestyle of the times and the social concerns of a particular era. Music and history are very much related. Music and Technology Technology is used to research famous composers, study a musical period, learn about a particular genre of music, or to retrieve information about some aspect of the music curriculum. Technology is used in the classroom to conduct research, publish reports, create power point presentations and take web quests. s in grades 3-8 have the opportunity to use the keyboard lab, where they can develop their listening and playing skills. Technology is helpful in networking with other music teachers and professionals. Modifications for English Language Learners Music provides students of all abilities and learning styles the opportunity to excel and enjoy a variety of musical experiences. Music is a universal language. s can respond to the music aesthetically without needing to know any particular language. s can listen to a CD, play a rhythm instrument, or learn a new song through rote or echo singing. Music allows 40

students to celebrate their uniqueness and their differences, without focusing the difficulties they may have with the English language. Assessment s do a variety of activities that assess student knowledge throughout the year. The students are assessed through hands on activities, projects, teacher observations, oral questions, worksheets, and other written assessments. Written Assessment Music written assessments are a combination of teacher made and textbook tests. They are given in a large group format and the date is used to assess the students' knowledge of the content. 41
