Vol.-I, No.-22 News bulletin of Goa State AIDS Control Society SEPTEMBER, 2011 Advocacy Workshop on HIV/ AIDS for Tourism Officials and Tourist Guides from Department of Tourism held at Miramar Residency Shri Swapnil Naik, Director, Dept. of Tourism-Panaji lighting the traditional lamp at the inaugural function of the workshop. Advocacy Workshop on HIV/ AIDS for Tourism Officials and Tourist Guides from Department of Tourism and GTDC-Panaji was organized by Goa State AIDS Control Society, Panaji on 1 st of August 2011 at Miramar Residency from 09:00am to 01:00pm. Dr. Pradeep Padwal, Project Director, Goa SACS formally welcomed the gathering. Present for the workshop were Shri Swapnil Naik, Director, Dept. of Tourism-Panaji, Shri Jose Roque Gracias Flor, Assistant Director, Dr. Lalitha Umraskar, Deputy Director (STD), Dr. Gokuldas Sawant, Deputy Director (Surveillance), Shri Umakant Sawant, DD (IEC) and Ms. Jeunesse D. Fernandes, Consultant (Youth Affairs) from Goa SACS, Panaji. 75 officials from Dept. of Tourism and GTDC, Panaji attended the program. The programe commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp marking the inauguration of the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to create awareness on HIV/ AIDS scenario in Goa among the officials of Dept. Of Tourism and the role they could play to control the spread of HIV/ AIDS. Dr. Pradeep Padwal, Project Director delivered a session on HIV/ AIDS Scenario in Goa, Dr. Lalitha Umraskar, Deputy Director (STI), on Sexually Transmitted and Reproductive Tract Infections and Dr. Gokuldas Sawant, DD (Surveillance) on Basic Services provided by Goa SACS. Questions were answered by the respective Goa SACS Officers after every session. The workshop concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Jeunesse D. Fernandes, C (YA), Goa SACS-Panaji.

WORKSHOP ON HIV/AIDS HELD AT VALPOI The Vice-Chairman of VMC, Smt. Fehmida Khan lighting the traditional lamp to mark the inauguration of the advocacy workshop organized by GIRDA in collaboration with Goa SACS. Also seen are Dr. Pradeep Padwal, Project Director, Goa SACS along with the PRI functionaries. The Goa Institute of Rural Development and Administration (GIRDA) in collaboration with Goa State AIDS Control Society (Goa SACS) organized a workshop on HIV/AIDS for PRI functionaries at Forest Training Hall, Valpoi Speaking at the inaugural function the Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) vice-chairperson, Ms. Fehmida Khan said that such workshops for public representatives will largely help them to spread awareness about the dreaded disease. She further added that this is also the responsibility of local representatives. She also said that there exist many misconceptions related to this disease which have to be eliminated. Other dignitaries on the dais were Assistant Director GIRDA, Ms. Rekha Joshi, Dr. Pradeep Padwal, Project Director, Goa SACS Shri Umakant Sawant, DD(IEC) and B.D.O. of Sattari Shri T. Mulgaonkar. Most of the sarpanchas and panchas of Sattari taluka attended the workshop. Ms Jeunesse Fernandes, C.Y.A, compered the programme and Shri Umakant Sawant, DD (IEC) proposed the vote of thanks. The Dignitaries present for the function were Shri Manguirish Pai Raikar, Chairman, Green Tengle Society and President of GCCI, Shri S. M. Paranjpe, Chief Inspector of Factories and Boilers, Dr. Pradeep Padwal, Project Director and Shri Umakant Sawant, DD (IEC), Goa SACS. Shri Anand Pangam, an oficial of Factories and Boilers welcomed the guests. Dr. Pradeep Padwal, Project Director delivered a talk on Workplace Intervention for HIV Prevention.

RRC inaugurated at Navdurga Higher Secondary School, Marcaim Dr. Gokuldas Sawant lighting the traditional lamp at the RRC inaugural function at Navdurga HSS, Marcaim. Also seen are Shri Ashok Fadte, Sanitary Inspector, PHC, Marcaim, Shri Satchit Fate, Principal, Shri Gaonkar, NSS Co-ordinator and Ms Jeunesse Fernandes, Consultant(YA), Goa SACS. A Red Ribbon Club was inaugurated by Goa State AIDS Control Society on 26 th August, 2011 at Navdurga Higher Secondary School, Marcaim. Smt. S. Sawant, Lecturer welcomed the guests and students. The dignitaries for the function were Dr. Gokuldas Sawant, DD(Surveillance), Goa SACS, Shri Ashok Fadte, Sanitary Inspector, PHC Marcaim, Shri Satchit Fadte, Principal, Shri Jai Prakash Gaonkar, NSS Co-ordinator amd Ms. Jeunesse Fernandes, Consultant(YA), Goa SACS. Dr. Gokuldas Sawant delivered a talk on HIV/AIDS and Safe blood donation. Ms. Jeunesse Fernandes briefed the students on the importance of RRC and its objectives. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms Jeunesse Fernandes.

Also seen are Dr. Marcia Pacheco, H.O. and Shri Ganesh, counselor STD Clinic Hospicio Hospital, Margao Dr. Gokuldas Sawant, DD (Surveillance), Goa SACS as a part of the monitoring team along with Dr. Prachi Bhandare at Hospicio Hospital, Margao. Dr. Savio Rodrigues, Prof. & H.O.D, Microbiology Dept., GMC conducting supervisory visit at Cottage Hospital, Chicalim. Also seen are Dr. Gokuldas Sawant, DD(Surveillance),Dr. Lalita Umraskar, DD(STD), Goa SACS and Shri Ulhas Velip, counselor, STD Clinic, Baina. Dr. Rajerndra Tamba, H.O. STD Clinic, Baina discussing with Dr. Lalita Umraskar, DD(STD) and Shri Ramesh Rathod, AD(TI), Goa SACS during the supervisory visit Supportive Supervisory visits were conducted to STD clinics at Hospicio, Hospital, Margao and Baina, Cottage Hospital Chicalim. The visits were conducted by State Resource faculty i.e. Dr. Savio Rodrigues, Prof. & H.O.D., Dept of Microbiology, GMC and Dr. Prachi Bhandare, Lecturer, Dept. of Skin & Venereology & Dermatology, GMC. During the visits, on site mentoring was provided to the counselors, Lab Technicains and nurse in the clinic. Clinic performance was reviewed based on the physical targets achieved. Areas of improvement were discussed with the Health Officer/ In-charge of the clinic.

State Resource faculty Dr. Manju Jindal, Prof. Department of Obstretics and Gynaecology, GMC, Bambolim conducted the CME programme. 22 doctors participated in the said programme.
