The Fisk ensembe is featured on Rodney Atkins singe Caught Up in the Country, which is at No. 25 on the Country Airpay chart dated March 2. It represents the first top 30 appearance on the ist for the Fisk group, which wi ceebrate its 150th anniversary in 2021, a year before the centennia of the first country recording session. Their contributions are particuary apparent in a breakdown section on Caught Up in the Country, which has Atkins singing above the voices, caps and stomps of the 16-member choir. I was tod severa times aong the way that it woud never work, says Atkins. It s not the first time the Fisk singers have intersected with country. They have performed with Faith Hi and Hank Wiiams Jr. and have appeared on recordings by Phi Vassar, Atkins first met the Fisk Jubiee Singers at a 2017 benefit rehearsa at Fisk University in Nashvie. Lee Greenwood and Shania Twain, who empoyed them on God Bess the Chid, which peaked at No. 48 on Hot Country Songs in 1997. But it s the first time the Fisk ensembe has received a feature, and it comes at an opportune juncture in country s evoution. Kane Brown, Darius Rucker and Jimmie Aen are current hitmakers of African-American descent. PBS profied Charey Pride in an American Masters episode that debuted Feb. 22, and the Country Music Ha of Fame and Museum hed a pane on Feb. 23 that expored the contributions of Ray Chares in conjunction with the rereease of both voumes of his andmark 1960s abums Modern Sounds in Country Music. I ike country music personay, says Crysta Brooks, one of the Fisk ato voices on Caught Up in the Country. She is heartened, she adds, to see artists that ook ike me entering those spaces and to know that we re abe to go perform songs ike this, merging a these different cutures. Caught Up in the Country was a direct resut of a 2017 merger in which Atkins, at the urging of Curb Word Entertainment chairman Mike Curb and CEO of

Atkins knew itte of the group s history at the time, but he was overwhemed when he waked into a rehearsa where the singers were aready raising the rafters. I was competey bown away by the energy, the spirit, he says. I ooked at my wife [songwriter Rose Facon], and she had tears in her eyes. That itte buiding, it was just it up in there. And we eft just feeing unbeievabe. Within weeks of the Ryman appearance, THiS Music GM/partner Rusty Gaston pitched Caught Up in the Country to Atkins, who saw it as a song that connected the earth to the sky. The Fisk ensembe, he thought, coud enhance that yrica message. What the song gave to me was this feeing of the outdoors, this connection that you have with God when you re out there, he says. It s that expression, Some peope go to church and think about fishing. Some peope go fishing and think about God. The choir s musica director, Fisk University associate professor of music Dr. Pau T. Kwami, agreed to the coaboration even before hearing the song because of his beief in Atkins and because the concept fit his beief in music s mission. Every cuture has its unique music or anguage, but a of us make this word a good pace as ong as we can accept each other, as ong as we re wiing to respect other cutures and accept them for who they are, says Kwami. If every cuture chose to stay within a box and not branch out and even earn about other cutures, I don t think that we woud be abe to express true ove the way it shoud be expressed. That outreach is ingrained in the Fisk singers history. Fisk University was founded a year after the 13th Amendment passed in December 1865, becoming the first American coege to offer a ibera arts degree to young men and women, irrespective of coor, according to FiskJubieeSingers.org. Within five years, the institution was in financia straits, and the group began touring to raise money. It sang Negro spirituas, which were previousy unfamiiar to the masses, and gave their a cappea performances in forma dress, countering the dismissive backface format that dominated theatrica depictions at the time. Green Book, which won the Oscar for best picture, best supporting actor and best origina screenpay at the Academy Awards on Feb. 24, demonstrated how treacherous it was for a singe African-American musician to tour amid segregated communities in the 1960s. The Fisk singers, whose number has aways exceeded nine vocaists, represented an easier target for discrimination. There was no Green Book, no reference, says Brooks. It was just massive trekking through, trying not to get kicked off of trains. It amazes me when I think about it. Country music, first recorded in 1922, was considered a niche market, much ike spirituas and race records, though it often has been referred to as the white man s bues. Country and back music tracked very different routes pubicy, though there was some distinct overap, incuding the eary presence of Deford Baiey on the Grand Oe Opry and the infuence of African- American musicians who mentored at east three of country s pioneers: Hank Wiiams, Jimmie Rodgers and buegrass founder Bi Monroe. Both music forms are rooted in simiar beief systems, working-cass attitudes and a hope for a better ife, whether it arrives on earth or in the hereafter: Working On a Buiding operates with the same beief in a heaveny reward as country s foundationa Carter Famiy song Wi the Circe Be Unbroken. Both aso speak to some form of oppression: The sense of being an outcast is obvious in the save songs that form the Fisk canon, but it s there, too, in every country song that seeks to defend being country. Atkins fees that outcast nature from his own history. As an orphan who ived at the Hoston United Methodist Home for Chidren in Knoxvie, Tenn., he was adopted and returned severa times before a famiy took him in permanenty. It s a storyine that he sti strugges to overcome. It does get in your psyche, he aows. There is something that is in the back of your mind that you aways wreste with, of whether you beong. My manager has aways had to te me from time to time, Look, man, you beong. That s the utimate significance of the Fisk singers membership in the ACM and their ascent on the country chart. At a time when racist rhetoric is on the rise in America, a historicay white music format is opening its arms to taent, recognizing the commonaities between two cutures and emphasizing the hope at the heart of both genres. It s simpy saying, You beong. Us being on the country music charts is amazing, notes Fisk bass singer Aen Christian. It just says that anything is possibe. On the ist dated March 2, Beautifu Crazy (River House/Coumbia Nashvie) ascends 2-1, increasing by 7 percent to 38.8 miion audience impressions in the week ending Feb. 24, according to Niesen Music. Written by Combs, Wyatt Durrette and Robert Wiiford, Beautifu reaches the summit in its 16th week. It matches Combs quickest trip to No. 1, which he first achieved with his fourth eader, She Got the Best of Me. The song reigned for four weeks starting in October 2018. His debut, Hurricane, which ed for two weeks beginning May 27, 2017, hit No. 1 in its 30th week. Foow-up When It Rains It Pours aso dominated for two frames, beginning Nov. 4, 2017, and reaching the apex in its 28th week. His third singe, One Number Away, ed for a week in its 24th frame (June 9, 2018). Dating back to the Country Airpay ist s January 1990 aunch, Combs bests two acts that each sent their first four singes (as ead artists) to No. 1. He first topped the tay for two weeks in November-December 2017 with Rains. Beautifu aso ifts 2-1 on Country Streaming Songs to become his first No. 1 among five top 10s. Producer Fred Foster, who founded Monument Records in 1958 and payed a roe in the rise of Wiie Neson, Roy Orbison, Kris Kristofferson and Doy Parton, died Feb. 20. Artist-musician Mac Wiseman, who took over the Dot abe s Caifornia-based country operations in 1957, died Feb. 24 after working with a range of buegrass, country and Americana acts and heping to found the Country Music Association in 1958. Foster moved his abe to Nashvie in 1959 FOSTER when he discovered Music City was a hospitabe community. He estabished Fred Foster Sound Studios downtown after purchasing the buiding from Sun Records founder Sam Phiips. Foster woud ater refocus his recording work at the Monument Studios, now the Zac Brown-owned Southern Ground Studios, on 17th Avenue. He produced key tites for Kristofferson, Orbison, Ray Stevens, Grandpa Jones, Jeannie Seey and Larry Gatin. He aso received co-writing credit on Kristofferson s Me and Bobby McGee after providing the tite for the song. The Monument abe, which he sod to CBS (now Sony) in 1987, was stocked primariy with singer-songwriters. Wiseman managed the Wheeing, W.Va.-based WWVA Jamboree in the ate 1960s and eventuay became an eder statesman in Nashvie music with a coaboration ist that ranged from big-band musician Woody Herman to Americana stawart John Prine. His first Dot recording, Tis Sweet to Be Remembered, stood as his theme song and takes on added meaning in the wake of his passing. Few country artists symboize that more than Chris Janson, whose rambunctious, cheereader concert antics are part of a professiona decision he makes on a near-daiy basis to stay focused on positivity. It s a major choice, he says. Good Vibes, reeased Feb. 8 via PayMPE as the ead singe from his third abum, turns that choice into an eectric, juiced-up anthem. The opening ines I ain t watchin TV today/ Bad news, it can just stay away put that choice squarey in the headights: If you don t want the negativity of poitics or The Jerry Springer Show, don t turn on the tube. That s why in our house we don t watch a ot of it, notes Janson. Writing Good Vibes may have taken his attention away intentionay or not from emotions that darkened the minds of many music industry members the day he wrote it at the office of songwriter-producer Zach Crowe ( Body Like a Back Road, Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset ). Oct. 1, 2018, was the anniversary of the Las Vegas massacre where a gunman kied 58 peope at a concert by the Mandaay Bay Resort and Casino. Numerous media roed out stories that revived the horrors for peope who were there or knew someone who had experienced it, and by the end of the day, many executives were emotionay spent. Janson, Crowe and co-writer Ashey Gorey ( What Makes You Country, Life Changes ) are uncertain if they were aware of it that morning, though they were definitey sifting through the good and bad in their ives. And as they hashed that out, they consciousy decided to foow an upbeat creative path for the day. Crowe had created a simpe, choppy guitar riff and saved it to his computer, and when he pued it up, it totay fit the bi. Janson suggested that the tite needed to convey good vibes, and that set off his co-writers songwriting antennae: Why not just ca it Good Vibes? A quick internet search confirmed that there wasn t an American hit with that name, and they went to work. They gave it a breezy chorus, ending the first two ines with good vibes and good ife, then focused on absorbing the moment in ine three: I m ivin on God s time. There s a itte bit of a depth to it, instead of just ike Let s have a good time and pop a beer, says Gorey. Not to say there s no acoho reference. I ve got me a fu cup/and there ain t nothin gonna spi it uses beer as a metaphor for choosing a gass-haffu viewpoint over the haf-empty perspective. To ceebrate a positive choice, however, Good Vibes needed to identify the negative option, and both verses accompish that. That opening anti-bad news ine went a ong way, and it became more emphatic when they turned a mother s warning If you ain t got anything good to say into an obvious concert shout-aong: Then shut. Your. Mouth. A of us were fuy aware of, if he cut it and if he put it out and it was a hit, how a crowd woud react with you at that moment, says Crowe. We re ending a verse at a big kind of crescendo moment, a of our radars go off: ding, ding. Where that verse-one moment hits the istener in the gut, verse two appeas to the head: I ain t tryin to hear the negative/i m just tryin to change the narrative/it s simpy imperative/that we a have a rea good time. Who the heck uses the word imperative in a commercia song? It s so funny, says Janson. When you grow up, you don t reay know what those words are, but you say them when you re a kid because you want to sound coo because you heard it in a movie somewhere. So I ve been saying that for years, and then I found out what it meant, and I finay was abe to put it to a song. With that repetitive guitar riff and the short nature of the stanzas, Good Vibes needed a bridge, and they setted quicky into a rap section that payed off the word good from the tite. Gorey and Janson went back and forth with descriptors a good gir with a good smie, who s part of a good morning after a good night that buids back into another go- round with the cheereader chorus. Adding to the song s choice of positivity, that bridge nods to another choice Janson made in his ife: marrying his manager, Key Janson. It s natura for me to sing about Key, he says. I wanted her to be highighted in the song because a ot of my good vibes, to be honest with you, personay come from my wife and kids. Once they had competed the song, Janson wheeed into a voca for the demo that utimatey became the backbone for the fina version. He was as animated as the song suggests, chaenging Crowe s engineering skis. He s not sti at a, notes Gorey. Zach records vocas [without] a voca booth. JANSON Everything is right there with everybody ooking at you in the room. It s an interesting thing. He s definitey jumping around. I don t know how Zach gets it to even out and sound good, but Chris is a performer at heart. He jitters around, but he s not getting off the mic. Crowe did a itte more work on the demo, though he broke or, at east, modified the no-tv rue of Good Vibes aong the way. I have a TV on in my studio running a the time, he says. I ve aways done it for 15, 20 years now. When I m there by mysef, it gives the room ife, makes me fee ike I m not aone in there. But I aways have it on SportsCenter, because it s meaningess. Sports are coo, but nothing reay matters. Crowe sent the finished demo to Janson on Oct. 5. He payed it for Key, who was convinced it was a hit. So was the abe, and Crowe enisted musician friends one at a time to fi it out. Aaron Stering overdubbed drums at his home in Los Angees; Keith Urban s bass payer, Jerry Fowers, added a part when he visited Crowe s house for a different project; and songwriter Jonathan Singeton ( Red Light, Why Don t We Just Dance ) banged out background vocas at a different co-writing session with Crowe. Devin Maone ayered additiona guitars, incuding a soo that happens so quicky that some isteners might not even reaize it s there. Good Vibes batted another new song, Check, to be the first singe from the next abum, but it was a unanimous decision, Janson says, to go with the former. It officiay goes for adds on March 4. Janson hopes it s a hit, of course, but even more, he hopes it heps isteners choose happiness, even when it s difficut to find. It s not that I ve been this way my whoe ife, he says. I ve had to earn to be this way mysef. I am very happy, and I m so proud to be a torch bearer if you wi it s just a sma ight in the word, but whatever infuence I may be abe to have, maybe it affect somebody in a great way.
