The Library Page Page 7 of 8 And Now NaNoWriMo in Six Words For sale: baby shoes, never worn. Ernest Hemingway Since 1999, National Novel Writing Month NaNoWriMo for short has been an annual event promoting writing. What began with fewer than two dozen people is a global event. To celebrate the written word, Demmer Library is hosting our own month-long NaNoWriMo event, which is a combination of another writing A.M. evidence of activity: six word stories. a midnight snack. Six word stories are precisely that: a story told in exactly six words. For some people, this is a very emotional exercise. For others, it is a humorous or witty tale told with extreme brevity. Ernest Hemingway is credited with writing the original six word story, shown above. It was a response to a challenge by colleagues, who bet he could not write a complete story in six words. Ernest won. She fell and scraped her heart. Where does the library fit in here? For the whole month, we have several spaces in the library that are now wall or doorway-size spaces of paper for everyone to add their own six word story. There is another twist here: while some space will be normal six word story space, there is also designated space for continuing six word stories. You write your six words, and someone else comes along and adds their own six words. The result is a continuing story written in six word chunks, whose authors have not collaborated at all. Do not become attached to your story if you write it in the continuing space! Who knows where it will go once set free? If you write a six word story and do not want to see it continued, be sure to place it in the self-contained areas where it will stand alone. You will be surprised by what you can say with six words. Try it out! My home sweet home. Not anymore. He s dangerous. She loved him anyway. Fighting ceased; the war did not.
