Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) In the eyes of an architect, a building is more than four walls, some windows, and a door. A building is a reflection of the architect's unique view of beauty. In the city of Barcelona, Spain, some of the buildings portray beauty from a very unconventional perspective. There is a great church which looks like something out of a dream. There are apartment buildings that have no straight walls. Metal fences and gates are formed in the shapes of strange plants and animals. Outside walls are covered with millions of small pieces of glass and pottery. In fact, some of these constructions look more like steel and stone. Many of these buildings are the work of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Early in his career, during the 1880s and 1890s, Gaudi borrowed from many European styles of the past. However, after 1900 he began to break from the past in an intensely personal way. He studied the Art Nouveau style of some Parisian artists. Like them, he used the forms of plants, flowers, trees, and animals in his Appendix 2 (Workbook) Unit 2, Page 9
designs. But Gaudi also added many new things. He used painting, sculpture, and even literature in his designs. Gaudi wanted everything in his buildings to be crafted by hand, not manufactured by machine. Therefore, each building took much slow and expensive work. Gaudi's building methods often were centuries old, but his engineering methods were modern and scientific. Only one part of his strange and beautiful church, the Sagrada Familia, was finished before his death. The rest of it remains unfinished to this day. Many of his other buildings were not finished, either. Gaudi was not always interested in practical planning. He spent large amounts of money on his buildings, sometimes too much. When he needed more money to build the church, he just went out on the street and asked people for it. People have never agreed on the quality of Gaudi's art. To some, he was an unconventional man who built odd-looking buildings. To others, he was a great artist who understood nature and engineering and who discovered beauty in new places. 1.
