If yur 4 th grade student is interested in playing band in 5 th grade next fall please read n! In music class, students have been learning abut band instruments and recently were visited by Mrs. Frnek, the 5th grade band directr. She demnstrated instruments that 4th grade students have the pprtunity t learn hw t play starting next year. 4th grade students and families are invited t cme t an exciting evening t learn abut 5 th grade band, try ut band instruments and get signed up t jin band fr next year. Yu can als sign instrument rental agreements with area music stres n these nights. The dates fr these meetings are: Tuesday, April 24th in the Hemlck Creek Cafeteria Thursday, April 26th in the Westwd Multi-Purpse Rm SCHEDULE FOR THE EVENING: 5:00-6:00 pm- Available fr students t try ut instruments in the music rms **6:00 pm- MANDATORY infrmatinal sessin fr 4th grade students/families interested in band** 6:30-7:30 pm- Available fr students t try ut instruments in the music rms Families may attend either meeting, regardless f which schl the student attends. The mandatry prtin f the meeting begins at 6:00 pm and will briefly discuss the band prgram and requirements including ur expectatins fr summer schl, instrument selectin and rental. Als, representatives frm Jim s Music and Heid Music stres will be present t discuss rental infrmatin and the ptins yu have in getting yur child playing an instrument. Starting at 5:00 pm and again after the mandatry prtin f the meeting are set aside fr yur student try ut the different band instruments that they are interested in playing. It is imprtant that each student chse at least 2 instruments t try, as the student s preferences may change after actually playing the instruments. We will have statins set up in the music rms fr students t try ut the instruments, hwever, please plan at least 30 minutes befre r after the meeting, as this invitatin is pen t all 4th graders in the district. We will have as many music teachers and musicians available t help this prcess g as quickly as pssible. At the end f this meeting r sn after, yu can turn in the cntact infrmatin frm (attached) stating yur student s intent t be a part f 5 th grade band next year as well as instrument chice based n yur student s instrument try-ut experience that night. Cmpleted frms will be due back t Ms. Reed r Mrs. Frnek n later than May 11 th. Yu can save yurself sme time later by filling ut the attached frm with yur cntact infrmatin and instrument preferences and bringing this t the meeting. 5 th Grade Band Expectatins Cntract Spring 2018 Please read thrugh and discuss the expectatins fr 5 th grade band with yur student and sign belw befre returning t Ms. Reed (Hemlck Creek) r Mrs. Frnek (Westwd). 5 th grade band is an ptin pen t all 5 th grade students in the West De Pere Schl District. Students that sign up fr band are enrlled in a full-year curse thrugh WDPSD. They will be evaluated and grades will be reprted each trimester (thrugh Pwerschl and schl reprt cards). The hmewrk that is graded fr band includes weekly practice lgs, attendance, and respnsibility t bring necessary materials t a weekly lessn. Students that chse t be a part f the band prgram are expected t perfrm in the 5 th grade band cncerts. Once yur student is signed up fr band and has an instrument chsen, they are set t be in band and play that specific instrument fr the entirety f the schl year. Students will nt switch instruments thrughut the year and are cmmitted t play fr the entire year, with any majr adjustments discussed with Ms. Reed (Hemlck Creek) r Mrs. Frnek (Westwd) t be made at the beginning f the fllwing trimester/grading perid. If at any pint, yu r yur student have any cncerns, questins, r wuld like sme extra help r assistance, please d nt hesitate t call yur student s band teacher. TAKE ME HOME--- 5 th Grade Band General Infrmatin Q. When des band take place and hw ften d they meet during the schl year? A. The gal is t meet with each student nce a week fr a 25 minute lessn during the schl day. Thrughut the schl year we will try t meet as a large grup and play tgether as a band as much as pssible. Q. Hw many perfrmances are students required t be at? A. The band will play tw perfrmances during the year, and these will be full band cncerts! In the past we have scheduled a Winter Cncert in December t feature hliday sngs and help shwcase the wrk yur student has dne ver the first half f the schl year. The secnd perfrmance will take place in May and will be the culminating event fr the band. This will shwcase what they have learned during the entire 5 th grade year fr band and jump start them int 6 th grade band repertire! Q. Hw d summer lessns wrk? A. Summer lessns will run fr tw weeks: 8/6-8/9 and 8/13-8/16. Students will reprt t the band rm at their schl Mnday thrugh Thursday fr abut an hur t play with ther students wh are learning the same instrument. Mre infrmatin regarding specific dates/times will be sent hme t students in May. Students will receive their rental instruments at this time, delivered t the schls frm the area music stres. Q. Are the 5 th Grade Summer Band lessns Mandatry? A. Yes! Hwever, we d realize that sprts, camps, vacatins, and ther cnflicts may arise. If yu have a cnflict with any f the dates, please attend as many f the ther sessins as pssible. This 2 week camp will eliminate much f the stress and get new players cmfrtable with the instrument befre the beginning f the schl year. After schl starts we nly see them nce a week, s this time in August is extremely valuable. Any amunt f extra time the student can get utside the schl year is helpful in their develpment, s please keep that in mind when planning yur summer schedules. Q. Hw are students graded in 5 th grade band? A. Students are graded based n a several factrs. Students will be given a practice lg t be filled ut each lessn. 5 th Grade students are asked t practice abut an hur per week (usually as 15min 4 times a week). The students will als be graded n bringing their necessary materials and demnstrating respnsibility in attending each lessn. If yur child has gd attendance, practices utside f class and is wrking t the best f their ability they will receive an A in this curse. Q. Are there schl wned instruments that my child can rent r use? A. The Schl District des nt lan r rent instruments in 5 th grade. Sme f the larger instruments such as tubas are supplied by the district and are issued t the students when they enter the middle schl.

Q. Shuld I rent an instrument fr my child r buy an instrument? A. Renting an instrument at first can be a great way t test the waters and make sure that yur student is ging t stick with band withut making a lng term investment right away. Many instrument rental cmpanies have prgrams in place fr rent t wn n instruments s there are many ways t invest in an instrument. If buying an instrument, please beware f instruments that are sld at Sam s Club and/r Ebay. They are inexpensive fr a reasn and will ften require a number f repairs. If yu are prviding yur wn instrument, make sure t bring t a music stre t get checked ver! Q. In general, what supplies d all band students need t have/rent/purchase? A.
