John Richard, President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. It s rewarding to see our Live at Knight series continue to grow. This is a particularly treasured series because its varied group of exceptional performers ranging all genres perfectly reflect the vast and rich cultural diversity in our community. As a gifted songwriter and dazzlingly singular singer, MACY GRAY has constantly exceeded fan expectation and industry formula since kicking off her music career with her debut 1999 CD, On How Life Is. That musical calling card spawned the massively popular anthem I Try, and both the CD and single were huge global hits. On How Life Is launched a career ride that has garnered two Grammys, two BRIT awards, two MTV awards, over 15 million units sold, and a thriving acting career including a key role in Lee Daniels upcoming Miami-based thriller The Paperboy, a current Cannes Film Festival favorite also starring Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman. MACY GRAY s 2012 release of Covered, a stunning new collection of cover songs, shows the artist at a creative peak. These were songs that I would ve probably written in another life, says Gray. They re almost all these kind of dark love songs, which is the mood I m in right now to sing these I-wanna-slit-my-wrists-but-I-love-you songs. They already said what I want to say, perfectly. Covered is a collection that wittily re-imagines songs that are already much beloved by fans around the world. The album retains the emotional honesty of indie rock songs such as Chemical Romance s Teenagers and Arcade Fire s Wake Up, while artfully reconfiguring the musical arrangements, and clearing space for MACY GRAY to place her indelible stamp on them. Covered also includes hits such as Radiohead s Creep, Colbie Caillat s Bubbly, Metallica s Nothing Else Matters, and Eurythmics Here Comes The Rain Again. In a demanding industry, MACY GRAY has forged her own vision, creating music that transcends genre barriers from experimental soul to alternative rock, from retro-disco to hiphop. Her artistic integrity and innovative style have won her fans across the globe, including artists such as Erykah Badu, Gang Starr, Mos Def, and Pharoah Monche, all of whom have collaborated with Gray. MATISYAHU brings his acoustic show back to the Arsht Center following a sold-out performance in 2011 that received rave reviews describing the artist's voice and stage presence as "tremendous, zen-like, and enlightening" (Creative Loafing Tampa Bay). MATISYAHU returns with local guitarist and longtime friend Adam Weinberg for another special acoustic evening featuring songs from his entire repertoire including his latest release, Spark Seeker, which debuted at #19 on the Billboard Top 200.
During AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH MATISYAHU, the artist will also share stories throughout his performance as he expands on his songs, their meaning, and his overall spiritual journey. A question-and-answer session with the audience will also take place. MATISYAHU began performing stripped down acoustic shows in early 2009, giving fans a more intimate and personal experience while simultaneously showcasing the simple statement of his music, incredible vocal range, and beat box talents.
