Aout the Comoser Andrew Boysen r ( 968) is resently a roessor in the music deartment at the University o New Hamshire, where he conducts the wind symhony and teaches conducting and comosition Under his leadershi, the UNH wind symhony has released six recordings and een invited to erorm at regional conventions o the College Band Directors National Association and National Association or Music Education reviously, Boysen taught at Indiana State University and Cary-Grove (IL) High School, and was the music director and conductor o the Deerield Community Concert Band He remains active as a guest conductor and clinician, aearing with high school, university and estival ensemles across the United States, Great Britain, and Australia Boysen earned his Doctor o Musical Arts degree in wind conducting at the Eastman School o Music, where he served as conductor o the Eastman Wind Orchestra and assistant conductor o the Eastman Wind Ensemle He received his Master o Music degree in wind conducting rom Northwestern University in 993 and his Bachelor o Music degree in music education and music comosition rom the University o Iowa in 99 He maintains an active schedule as a comoser, receiving commissions rom estival, university, and high school concert ands across the United States Boysen won the International Horn Society Comosition Contest in 000, the University o Iowa Honors Comosition rize in 99 and has twice won the Claude T Smith Memorial Band Comosition Contest, in 99 and 994 Boysen has several ulished works with the Neil A Kos Music Comany, Wingert-ones Music, Alred Music, Masters Music, and C Alan ulications, including ieces or and, orchestra, clarinet and iano, and rass choir Recordings o his music aear on the Sony, R-Kal, Mark, St Ola and El laels Aout the Comosition Ales was commissioned or Randy Atkinson and the Tat Middle School 7th-8th Grade Band (Cedar Raids, IA) uon the occasion o Randy s retirement ater 30 years o teaching, including 5 years at Tat and 5 years at neighoring Linn-Mar High School Ater discussion with Randy s daughter, hersel a local music teacher, and Bo Manson, a ormer colleague and riend at Tat, the iece is intended to ocus on Randy s energetic ersonality, one which endeared him to his students The iece is minimalist in nature, using the numer 5 as a generating orce and structured using a rocess in which reeating layers enter and leave ater laying their assage three times Each o these layers is 5 measures long with 3 eats to the measure (5 eats er assage) The asic melodic cell or the iece egins with a harmonic 3rd moving to a harmonic 5th
