The Pina Colada is a sweet, rum-based cocktail. Along with rum, a Pina Colada includes cream of coconut and pineapple juice and is usually served blended or shaken with ice. Pina Colada literally means strained pineapple, a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink. There are different claims to the invention of the Pina Colada beginning in 1952 in San Juan, each sticking to their story. The truth is that pineapple and rum have been together from the beginning of the distillation of rum. The first written reference to a Pina Colada was in 1922. This recipe, however, did not include coconut. It used to be so easy to buy eggs. You went into the store, picked them up, paid for them and left. You can t say the same thing nowadays. You have brown eggs, white eggs, extra-large eggs, large eggs, small eggs, cage-free eggs, all natural eggs, no antibiotics eggs, and the list goes on and on. How many of us know what all those terms mean? Not many. So here is a little information to help you when you go to the store to buy a dozen eggs, depending on what s important to you. I Eggs do hope that reading labels has become important to you because it really is. All Natural means absolutely nothing. There s no regulatory status to this claim. Of course we think they can t lie, but I beg to differ with you. All natural means a big fat nothing so don t pay extra if it doesn t matter to you. Farm Fresh is a kissing cousin to All Natural in that it means nothing also. If you want to know if your eggs are fresh, check the packaging date marked on the carton. No Hormones is very misleading. No hormones are to be used in egg laying hens already, per the United States Department of Agriculture. So yes, it is true that the eggs have no hormones, but then again none of the eggs you purchase in the United States contain hormones either. Cage Free Free Range and Pasture Raised makes you think of chickens running around happily in a field somewhere. Again: Cage Free is a voluntary label recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture saying that the chickens can roam around in a room, building or enclosure without cages. Nowhere does it say that that space is outdoors or that they ll ever see the outdoors and it doesn t specify the size of the space they roam in. You can see that this is open to a great deal of interpretation. The facilities are paid a visit by the governing agency twice a year to make sure they re abiding by the regulations. Personally, I wonder if that is being done. Free Range, like Cage Free, is voluntary. It means that the chickens have access to the outdoors. Now this is really open to interpretation. Just because a place has a door doesn t mean it opens. Reminds me of when the VA in Georgia built a wheelchair ramp up to a set of stairs. As with the Cage Free label, staff visits this facility twice a year. Now we re down to Pasture Raised which isn t even defined by the regulations. Labeling guidelines haven t even been developed yet, so cross this off your list of preferred types of eggs. There s a monkey wrench I m going to throw in here. I recently found out that even though there s no definition for Pasture Raised, the United States Food and Drug Administration is taxed with the authority to make sure what you say on a package is correct. Let s move on to the USDA s National Organic Program. This program has very stringent rules for what s labeled Organic and certified. The National Organic Program says that if eggs are labeled Organic Free Range it means that they re free to roam around; Cage Free means they are not living out their limited days in a cage, and Pasture Raised means the little guys have to have time outside. By it s very nature, eggs carrying the Organic label must be egg laying hens which are cage free, have access to the outdoors and receive vegetarian organically feed. Furthermore, the National Organic Program demands that the little guys have year-round access to the outdoors. Of course, that s open to interpretation too, but it s a little better than saying access. In closing, I would suggest that if you have access purchase your eggs from a Farmer s Market because small family owned farms more often than not use far less pesticides, herbicides, hormones, etc. If you don t have access to a Farmer s Market, I purchase eggs that are certified Organic because that certification covers all the bases in my opinion. - By Chris Kane Jean s Helpful Hints Many residents will have their children and grandchildren here during the summer months. Please remember to register your guests with the office. They may stay for two weeks at a time and a total of 30 days during a calendar year. Children under the age of 18 must have a resident present with them at all of the amenities. The Pool Bar is available for rent to residents looking to host private parties. A $100 deposit will hold your desired date and a Private Party sign will be placed in the area to inform others the bar is in use. A form must be completed in the office for this option. The Pool Bar and gas grill are available daily for residents who just want to hang out. Inquire at the office for either option.
