On Eagle s Wings Ride of the Valkyries Star Wars ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GENERAL NOTES SOLO AND ENSEMBLE CONTEST (SEC) Congratulations to all who participated in the 18th annual WSHSB Solo & Ensemble contest last Saturday. To even participate in the SEC is an accomplishment, as it takes forethought, practice, preparation, and good execution. It was a real pleasure to hear so many wonderful performances. A special thank you go out to Mrs. Tara Romsaithong, SEC Coordinator and her assistant, Mrs. Samantha Koertge, for the selfless hours put into to running this project which started back in early fall. Again, congratulations to all of you! SEC JUDGING SHEETS A copy of every participant s SEC Judging Sheet can be found in your music folder at the front desk. Ensemble sheets went to the first person on the sheet. Awards will now be ordered and when they arrive they will be distributed with the original judging sheets. SEC MUSIC DONATIONS If anyone wants to donate their music to the SEC file, please bring it to band in the next week or two and we ll add your donation to the band s SEC music lending library. CALLING ALL 2019 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES If you are graduating from high school this year, make sure you write your name is on the list at the front table. Deadline is April 25. NOTE This request has nothing to do with members aging out of the student classification into the adult helper classification. It is to facilitate our recognizing those making their academic graduation regardless of age. ANNOUNCING PERFORMANCE AT IHM CONFERENCE We have been invited to perform at the IHM (Immaculate Heart of Mary) home school conference in Woodridge on Friday, July 19th during the lunch break from 12:45-1:15pm. They have a speaker that starts immediately at 1:15 and need us to stop before them. We will play about 20 minutes of music so they can have some quiet time before their next talk. Music/musicians/practice will all come from Marching Season. Sign-ups will not begin until after Marching sign-ups are in progress. LOOKING AHEAD TO AUDITIONS This time of year is a GREAT time to gently remind everyone that the audition deadline about six (6) months away. It will be here before you know it. Current Cadets should also pay heed to this advice. If you hope to move up a level you will need to prepare a Concert Junior audition. Musical skills are not best built separately over the summer, or even worse, in just a few days before an audition recording is due. They are built with diligent, consistent daily practice. Audition requirements are subject to change to a greater or lesser degree every year. In the past, Junior and Senior audition requirements have changed only slightly from year to year (see Audition Requirements on our

website s AUDITIONS tab). Know that we are always considering new options. Please note the Senior Audition requires a portion of the Part 2 No. 1 scale passage from the book entitled Unisonal Scales, Chords & Rhythmic Studies for Bands Compiled and edited by William C. White, published by Carl Fischer. Senior audition music, which is required in addition to the exercises, is released about a month before the audition recording deadline. Our more challenging, Symphonic audition is based on the entire Part 2 No. 1 scale passage from the Unisonal Scales, Chords & Rhythmic Studies for Bands Compiled and edited by William C. White, published by Carl Fischer. Symphonic audition music, which is required in addition to the exercises, is released about a month before the audition recording deadline. All these exercises can and should be practiced DAILY if students hope to improve as musicians, especially those not studying privately. They are foundational assignments that are designed to help the student to progress. The director encourages you to evaluate yourself and your skills. Was last year's audition too hard? Then what is stated above applies even more. Was last year's audition quite easy? Then perhaps it is time to explore the idea of striving to promote up to the next band. This will require you leaving your comfort zone and entering a new set of unfamiliar and more challenging exercises. Again, whichever band you hope to study with next year, the audition exercises are not learned and perfected overnight, but over time. Start now. Begin working daily on the audition exercises for the band you see yourself in for fall. Desire to move up a band level? Please remember, in order to be considered for a band level promotion, members need to prepare and perform BOTH the audition for the band they are in as well as the one to which they are aspiring. This is all the more reason to begin preparing known parts early. SUGGESTED STRATEGY FOR AUDITIONING There is a document, created by the director, on our Auditions web page. It is entitled Suggested Strategy for Auditioning. In it she does just as the title suggests and offers concrete examples of how to navigate the audition process to give you the best advantage possible. It is well worth taking the time to review. You won't regret it, but you will regret not using the next six months wisely.
