01 The Brief Based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, The Brunts Academy is a renowned school that was founded by Samuel Brunts founder of the Brunts Charity in 1709. Earlier in the year Mytec Group were approached by Brunts Technical Manager, Mr Cartwright, who explained that the current CCTV system at the academy was very limited due to its age and was proving costly to maintain each year. The existing system was made up of 80 analogue cameras and was hindered by poor image quality, making it near impossible to review an incident retrospectively. Page 1
02 The Solution In an effort to address these problems and modernise the system, Mytec Group proposed a new CCTV solution that would integrate directly into Brunts existing IT network. The new system concept utilised multiple recording units across several campus buildings, which would not only reduce the strain on the schools IT network, but it would also ensure that the system would not stop recording if a single recorder unit malfunctioned. Page 2
The new system combined a mixture of 2, 4 and 5 MP (Megapixel) static cameras, each equipped with different technologies to solve particular issues around the campus. For example, some external cameras were previously installed in areas that were prone to excessive sunlight, often causing there images to white out. To resolve this, Mytec employed specialist cameras that were designed to provide a clear image even in harsh lighting conditions. For most of the internal locations, 5 MP anti-vandal dome cameras have been deployed to provide a consistent, clear image throughout the academy. The selected model uses a 2.8 MM wide angle lens that enables a single camera to monitor a large area of the building. The added benefit of this camera is that it is also capable of maintaining a high level of clarity when digitally zooming to investigate an incident, even whilst playing back a recording. To provide a greater level of security at The Brunts Academy, Mytec Group also installed an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. This feature is an effective safeguarding tool that enables staff to monitor the access gates into the site, helping to identify any vehicles that enter.
03 The Conclusion The CCTV system at The Brunts Academy is now fully controlled in-house by their IT department, where they can not only assign images, but they can also assign permissions to ensure that the system is only viewable to relevant members of staff. The system now provides exceptional coverage and playback quality for the entire site, ensuring a safer learning environment for students and staff. Upon completing the installation of the new system, Mr Cartwright commented: The new system really has surprised everyone who has seen it so far. The image clarity is far superior, and the software is user-friendly enabling all relevant staff to view the cameras with ease. Carl Atkin, Head teacher at The Brunts Academy: The work done in our Academy is outstanding! Page 5
