2 Editor s Note Wolgang Amadeus Mozart (17561791) was one o the most signiicant coosers o the Viennese Classical style and is revered today as one o the greatest coosers o all time. Mozart was a tremendously talented cooser in the many orms o the Classical era, including operas, syhonies, concertos, chamber works, sonatas, choral works, arias, and songs. His works are highly revered or their beautiul melodies and rich harmonies. Born in Salzburg, Austria, Mozart s genius was apparent at a very early age. He became a wellknown perormer in many European cities by his early teens, eventually serving as concertmaster or the Archbishop o Salzburg. In 1781, ater becoming discontented with his low salary and the lack o opportunity or more opera coosition in Salzburg, Mozart quit the position and settled in Vienna. Achieving many successes in Vienna, he became known as the inest keyardist in the city, and he coleted a variety o works, including piano concertos and operas. Although he became amous or a while, Mozart s career and inances gradually declined. He spent his remaining years without the security o a permanent position while struggling or recognition and commissions. This publication provides the opening portion o the Gloria ound in Mozart s Missa Solemnis, K. 139. Also known as the Orphanage Mass (Waisenhausmesse), it was written when Mozart was only twelve years old or the dedication o the new orphanage church in Vienna. Mozart conducted its irst perormance on December 7, 1768 at Father Parhammer s orphanage church in the presence o a distinguished gathering that included the ierial court. The source or this edition is W. A. Mozart s Sämtliche Werke, I, published by Breitkop and Härtel (18761905). Scored originally or S.A.T.B. voices with an accoaniment o oes, truets, tromnes, strings, continuo, organ, and tiani, this arrangement or 3part mixed voices includes a piano reduction o the instrumental parts as the accoaniment. Modern cles, dynamics, and the teo marking have been added by the editor. Additionally, the editor has included the introduction o two measures and a repetition o the opening Gloria rerains, beginning at measure 26. This joyous setting should be perormed very energetically and rhythmically, always ehasizing the normally stressed syllables.
