Zev Yaroslavsky International Council Directors, Int l Competitions Count de Launoit, Belgium Kaija Saariketu, Finland Agnes Maria Schilling, Germany ipalpiti s 15th Laureates Festival lived up to the high expectations set by our audience, our musicians, our conductor and by the press. Festival audiences filled all concert venues and were more enthusiastic than ever: who will forget the shouts of wonder that followed the searing performance of Peter Vasks Piano Quartet at LACMA? The twenty six musicians who comprised ipalpiti this year outdid themselves: as they win important orchestral appointments, recording contracts, and concert appearances multiply, their role as the leaders of classical music s future is increasingly assured. Eduard Schmieder s choice of repertoire this year was as illuminating as ever, and the performances he drew from ipalpiti were deeply affecting; Schoenberg s son was present for the for the Disney Hall performance of Verklärte Nacht, and pronounced it the finest he had heard. Press coverage was wide and especially thorough: the Los Angeles Times provided not only a sterling review, but a thoughtful and impressive portrait of four individual ipalpiti musicians. The ipalpiti Festival is, after 15 years, an event that is eagerly anticipated by audiences in Los Angeles, New York, and in venues from Salzburg to Eilat. Jonathan Steinberg, Chairman ipalpiti artists love music, they are its real future and the audiences acknowledge and truly appreciate it. So, we share some of ipalpiti impressions received post-festival: Thank you for the miracle of ipalpiti. The concert last night was beyond excellent! From the choice of music to the performances... There aren t words adequate to describe the experience. Each year somehow ipalpiti achieves a new benchmark for excellence. Judge Harold Shabo The Verklaerte Nacht performance was exceptional it is not often that one hears it played so sensitively. Congratulations to you and your fine performers. Larry Schoenberg Once again my grateful thanks to you all for a great great evening. There was something very special that came across on a pure emotional level from the conductor and all the musicians, a pure joy. I was really moved. Michael Going Dear Maestro and Mrs. Schmieder, We are in absolute and irrevocable awe of you: your grandiose talent, unbridled dedication, and unthinkable sacrifice. Your efforts could only be measured on the scale of Greek tragedies for every day you are faced with seemingly insur mountable obstacles. What you do, however, elevates and ennobles the thousands who had a privilege of coming close to your magic. Ever since last night s concert, we are suspended in a different dimension by far more pure and bright than our daily life. We salute and celebrate you. Roman, Yana, Rachelle and Ben Shukman Bless you both for the wonderful work you are doing!! Michael Napoli, Performing Arts LIVE Never since high school have I cried listening to the music. I was sure I was way past that. They say Paganini s violin could cry and laugh. That s what happened yesterday. Rita Kravchinsky I was blessed to be at Disney Hall on July 28th. Something to be a talk of the town, the critics, the musicians, the human beings! SCREAM about it LOUD! And in spite of the fact that I heard Schoenberg so many times and read a lot about it it was so impressive and different and very wise while so young and inspirational it made me cry. And Maestro s body language and the young artists expressions all indeed contributed. Margarita Stanislavskaya, New Jersey The ipalpiti Concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night was outstanding! Eduard Schmieder as Conductor was amazing! The young musicians were vibrant and enthusiastic! At 94 years, I continue to appreciate the importance of classical music in our lives! I am fascinated by the sounds and the beauty of the movement of Maestro Schmieder s hands!!!! Betty Falk Magnificent and unforgettable a spiritual key to the haven. With performance so superb, it was impossible to believe that the musicians from all over the world were meeting in LA for the annual festivals only. Such a phenomenon could be described by the equation talent and youth of musicians multiplied by mastery, wisdom and knowledge of maestro Eduard Schmieder. It s not a fashionable idea in this age of relentless pursuit of authenticity, but that doesn t bother Schmieder. Nor should it, for he put together an imaginative, wide ranging and, yes, witty combination of these things, played with smooth, expert brilliance by his young string players from around the globe. To start, there was a transcription of a Handel Passacaglia by Igor Lerman for strings and harpsichord that cascades onward in lush fashion until, suddenly, the strings dissolve in a dissonant wash a la Alfred Schnittke (no wonder; the transcription was dedicated to him). The famous J.S. Bach/Stokowski Preludio followed, played by ipalpiti even more beautifully now than a decade ago. Leading Czech violinist Pavel Sporcl, last seen with ipalpiti in 1999, returning as a renowned virtuoso, played the Kreisler/Zandonai version of Tartini s Devil s Trill Sonata, and added Saint Saëns s Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso all rendered with polished control and dynamic variety, never forcing his tone. Schoenberg s own string orchestra version of his Verklärte Nacht was given a broad, scintillating, clearly etched performance that was very faithful to the score s many tempo fluctuations, generating a cool fire that was quite moving. Finally, having once again affirmed ipalpiti s ability to shine, Schmieder deconstructed it a bit with a little known Hindemith practical joke, the Minimax quartet in string orchestra garb. Minimax is a parody of military band music, with deliberate wrong notes, funny harmonics and wild, dynamic contrasts. The humor can be heavy in a hearty Germanic way, yet Schmieder s deadpan underlining of certain points made for a performance of delightfully silly fun. Three encores wrapped it all up Böhm s Perpetuum Mobile, Bach s Badinerie and MacDowell s To a Wild Rose. July 29, 2012, Rick Ginell, Los Angeles Times Alumni News: Violinist Daniel Austrich (Russia Germany) joined the Michelangelo Quartet the youngest to play alongside such renown in a classical international world as violist Nobuko Imai, cellist Frans Helmerson, and violinist Michaela Martin. www.michelangelostringquartet.com Violinist Julia Sakharova (Moldova) left her position as Assoc. Concertmaster of the Alabama Symphony to join the Arianna String Quartet as well as the position of Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. www.ariannaquartet.com Violinist Robert Kowalski (Poland) became First Concertmaster at the Radio Orchestra in Lugano / Switzerland (Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana ). Cellist Adolfo Gutierrez Arenaz (Spain) first appearance with ipalpiti was in 1996 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He was the soloist with ipalpiti at the Ford Theater, and came to LA annually through 2004. Leading an active solo career, after his debut with the London Symphony (playing Elgar concerto), he is an invited soloist for the Royal Philharmonic tour in May 2013 (under Charles Dutoit), and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig (under Riccardo Chailly). Cellist Jason Calloway (USA) a member of Amernet String Quartet for the 3rd season. Based in Miami, Amernet currently are The Fellows in the Honors College at FIU, teaching a course entitled Exploring World Cultures through the String Quartet. Touring this season throughout the states, Mexico, Canada, Israel, Amernet s 2013 season brings their Kennedy Center debut and the South America tour to Colombia, Costa Rica, and Uruguay. Summer 2012 included many festivals residences, from Maui to Colorado, performing Mozart Quintet with yet another ipalpiti alumnus, violist Misha Galaganov (Israel) who is now on the faculty at TCU in Fort Worth, TX. Cellist Francisco Vila (Ecuador Spain) spent two months in Bolivia, giving classes in a program called Bolivia Clasica, which offers children of all ages the chance to learn to play stringed instruments; and he says there are some kids here that show an amazing talent. During July August he soloed with orchestras in Europe and recorded. He returns to Chapelle Queen Elisabeth in Brussels after Bolivia program, and comes to LA in January for few local series engagements. More summer news: ipalpiti violinist Irakli Tsadaia (Georgia) was selected prizewinner among 1003 participants of all 3 ses sions of the Mozarteum Summer Academy. He went to Mozarteum right after LA festival on a full scholar ship from ipalpiti. As Mozarteum prizewinner he received an 1100 award and concluded finale concert of the famed Salzburg Festspiele.
