The first ledger belongs to King Carr and Son Undertakers and Embalmers, 1915-1918, and lists itemized purchases and names of customers. It also includes an envelope with a newspaper clipping, a loose receipt, a loose note about a burial permit, and a loose note titled What Still Have On Hand. There are a few blank pages (15-29, 75-115, 122-136) and some that are missing (137-138). The second volume is an account book from a general store owned by James Madison Chamberlain, 1922-1923. This ledger lists customers and itemized purchases. It also includes an obituary newspaper article, Merlin West Dies at Lafayette ; three programs for funeral services; two announcements; and a photograph of three checks. The third ledger is from the Secretary District Advisory Board and its study on the Enumeration of Scholastic Population for the Year 1913, District 12. There are several blank pages in the middle of the ledger, and half of a page is missing. 1
The fourth ledger is from a general store owned by Edgar Grant King, 1904-1905. It contains itemized purchases and names of customers. Near the end of the volume, several pages are missing. Also inside is a drawing of a house that appears to have been made by a child. The fifth ledger is from a general store owned by George Lewis Walton and Captain William M. Haley, 1897-1899. Inside are lists of customers and itemized purchases. The sixth ledger is from a general store owned by Lewis F. Pipkin and his wife, Mary Ann Duke Pipkin, 1918-1958. It lists names of customers and itemized purchases. Pages 22-156 are blank and pages180-193 are missing. It also mentions their daughter, Little Sallie. The seventh ledger is an account book from a general store owned by John Sylvester Wooten. The ledger lists names of customers and itemized purchases. Inside are blank pages (208-268) and pages that are missing (268-280). Near the back is a bank slip. His parents were W. L. Chamberlain and Ada Faust. He died on September 26, 1958. On July 31, 1877, Edgar Grant King was born to James Wilson and Mary Margaret White King. Edgar married Ida May Medor King, a daughter of Edward Banister and Cornelia Price Medor, on January 22, 1901. They had seven 2
children: Hersel Blane (January 8, 1902-December 26, 1933) married Claude Blankenship; Olga Edith (February 1, 1903-September 1967) married Bethal Gregory; Willie Blanton (September 10, 1906-August 1965) married Dorothy; Hazel Ruth (October 4, 1908-January 1999) married Willie Benton Adge; Mary Elizabeth (February 3, 1911-July 1990) married Dave Knight; Lenore Frances (September 7, 1914-April 20, 1993) never married; and Mildred May (February 17, 1917-December 6,1985) married Harold Davis. Edgar King, known as Pappy King to his grandchildren, worked as farmer and rural mail carrier. He delivered the post in a mule-drawn wagon for over forty years. Edgar died October 12, 1956. Lewis F. Pipkin (July 10, 1847-March 15, 1928) married Mary A. Pipkin (October 14, 1848- February 16, 1923) in 1872. They had a daughter, Sallie, in 1880. George L. Walton, one of nine children, was born near Lafayette in 1822. He and Maria Griffith married on June 2, 1850. George had three children: W. H. Carter, Rebecca M., and Laura. George was active in Macon County government; he served as county register for eight years and later as a county clerk. George was also a county assessor and was elected county trustee in 1876. In 1884, he resumed mercantile life with his partner Captain William Haley. George L. Walton died on April 22, 1907. John Sylvester Wooten was born on September 1, 1848. He married Rebecca M Wooten. Their children included Carrie Bertha Hayes, Lillian M. Cothron, Effie Griffin Meredith and Walton W. Wooten. John Wooten died September 27, 1916, and is buried in Walton Cemetery. Organization/Arrangement of Materials The ledgers are arranged alphabetically by author or business name. If there is more than one author, the first is the controlling author.
