Web pages display text that outlies how the iflueces of five differet historical periods shaped cotet ad how the uique talets of a hadful of idividuals brought artistic form to the book. REASON FOR THE PROJECT This iovative web ad curriculum project will recoect New Mexicas to a importat but little kow aspect of their literary history ad artistic heritage. A basic kowledge of the laborious, mechaical process of producig a hadmade book desig, typography, pritig, bidig ad the effect of particular choices o the ed product. Ask idividual studets why books are importat to them ad others. Books should be passed aroud durig the discussio. What is a book? What makes a book a book? Does it have to have pages to be a book? What were the first books made of? How are books made? Why were books so rare i our past? Why are books more available today? Why are books cosidered works of art? What would it be like to be uable to read? What reasos would there ot to be able to read to read? 2. Discuss importat idividuals i the history of private presses i New Mexico. Padre Atoio José Martíez (1793 1867): Bor i Abiquiu, NM. Champio of the poor; brought educatio to New Mexico. Was resposible for the first prited books i the New Mexico. His books were used to teach boys ad girls how to read ad write i Spaish. Oe was the Cuadero de Ortografía. Joh Meaul (i NM startig 1877): New Mexico publisher of triligual works, i Eglish, Spaish, ad Keres. Spud Johso a.k.a. Walter Willard Johso (i NM 1920s 1968): A poet, writer, publisher, humorist. His press was kow as the Laughig Horse Press. Liked to work i his swimsuit. Rii Templeto (i NM 1950s 1974): Publisher ad illustrator. She worked to promote social justice (fought to protect people who were beig treated badly). Explai that studets will be makig pop-up cards, a kid of paper art used by some book artists. 2. Share examples of pop-up books with the class (see attached bibliography for referece. What makes these books iterestig? What works? Is aythig cofusig? Which oes are studets favorites? Why? 3. Pass out the template with the image of the Palace of the Goverors located at the ed of this documet ad a blak sheet of paper. Studets color ad decorate the image of the Palace of the Goverors. The, they cut out the image of the Palace, icludig the tabs o either ed. 4. Studets fold the blak sheet i half, makig a card. 5. Studets the bed the image to make it 3-D, with the decorated side out. Next they tape or glue the tabs to each side of the iside of the folded blad sheet. 6. Studets re-close ad ope the card, testig to see whether or ot the tabs were attached i the right places ad that the images bows out. Oce tabs are securely i the right place, allow the glue to dry. This kid of pritig makes impressios directly from the object that appears o the paper. 2. Studets place fresh flat leaf, veied side up o ewspaper. They prepare their ik by squeezig half a ich of ik o the upper quarter of the ikig slab ad spreadig it with the brayer util the roller is coated smoothly. 3. Studets roll the iked brayer slowly ad with eve pressure over the leaf, stem to tip. Next, they lift iked leaf carefully by the stem ad lay o fresh piece of ewspaper. 4. Studets lay a piece of pritig paper getly over the leaf (2 iches larger tha the leaf) ad tape dow the ed of the paper so that it does ot move. Holdig the paper dow with oe had, studets the press ad rub getly over leaf with figers of other had. 5. Studets lift paper straight up to prevet smearig, tur face up ad allow to dry for a few miutes. The results should be a accurate detailed picture of a leaf. 6. Studets may choose to do more prits. If the ik dries, add aother small dab ad smooth with the brayer.
