Summer 2018 Brochure
MISSION STATEMENT Periapsis Music and Dance believes in the artists of today and in the body of work that they are creating. The extraordinary choreographers and composers of our time have the vision, voice, and skill to create collaborative works of intrinsic artistic value worthy of performance, study, and preservation. Our mission is to cultivate this new concert repertoire at the intersection of dance and music by actively contributing to it with our ensemble and by facilitating and encouraging such collaborations in the community.
WHY IS PERIAPSIS SPECIAL? 1) OUR WORK TRANSCENDS THE IDENTITY OF ANY SINGLE ARTIST. We combine work by our resident composer and choreographers with that of commissioned guests, helping to build a wide-ranging repertoire from diverse artistic voices that s nevertheless united by the desire to bring music and dance together as equal partners.
2) WE COLLABORATE. Our company includes both dancers and musicians who regularly work together. Our repertoire is primarily created by choreographers and composers working together. We understand that collaboration can enhance an artist s vision, leading to unexpected discoveries and resulting in a final product that s greater than the sum of its parts.
3) WE EXPLORE. We re not afraid to try things that haven t been done, or to venture outside of our comfort zone to reveal new expressive possibilities.
4) WE SEE BEYOND OUR OWN WORK. In addition to our company work, we have several programs to facilitate, encourage, and sometimes directly produce other artists music/dance collaborations. From the Periapsis Open Series to the Emerging Artist Residencies to networking events and free online resources, we re a vital resource for artists working at the intersection of dance and music performance. Our online Composer List currently has over 500 names, representing a majority of US states/territories and almost 50 other countries, a truly international resource! Learn more about our service initiatives, including a list of outside artists we ve presented through our series, on our website.
5) WE RE BUCKING THE TREND. At a time when underpaying (or not paying) artists has become all too normal, particularly in modern dance, we re determined to be part of the solution. We pay artists at a rate that respects their time and their talent, which is very rare among companies our size.

And people are noticing we had our Jacob s Pillow debut last summer, and we ve collaborated with The Joyce Theater and NYU Tisch on various service programs. Our list of institutional donors increases every year, with government, corporate, and foundation support. Every aspect of our work has tremendous potential for growth, from our company productions to touring work to educational initiatives to our service programs.
SUPPORTING PERIAPSIS We have many tiers of support, with benefits ranging from rehearsal invitations to program acknowledgment to season tickets! Donations at $1,500 and above may be eligible for Artists Circle status, in which your support is directed towards the creation of a specific new work. Please visit our donation page for an up-to-date list of support levels and benefits. We re also actively searching for individuals who would like to take a leadership role in helping us realize our mission by joining our Board of Directors. Please contact us for more information!
... a distinct and fascinating vision... important and exciting in the NYC dance community. Cecly Placenti, Critical Dance It s actually a company officially dedicated to what brings music and dance together... and it s sort of daunting and breathtaking to see how many parts of that field Periapsis is addressing. Miro Magloire, guest choreographer It s really this wonderful laboratory... where we re all in a space, we re doing something experimental, we re coming to the work with a sense of play and discovery, and making something brand new.
