Alta High School Instrumental Music 2017-2018 Audition Packet Ensembles Music Ensembles are open to all grades at Alta High School. Ensembles are listed as either Non Audition or Audition Required. Students wanting to enter a non-audition class may do so without any restrictions during their allotted class registration date. Any students wishing to add an auditioned course, must attend their desired classes audition date. See following page for Ensemble details and audition materials. Symphonic Band Grades 9-12 (1.0 Credit) Available Instruments - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion This intermediate level band course is designed for the wind/ percussion musicians who want to improve their technical and expressive musical skills through performance. Students will be expected to practice 20-30 minutes a day. Pep band may be part of the course requirement during football and basketball seasons. Rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the course requirement and constitute a portion of the grade. Wind Symphony Grades 9-12 1.0 credit Prerequisite: Audition Required Available Instruments - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion This advanced band course is designed for the wind musician who wants to improve their technical and expressive musical proficiency through performance and study of music. Students will be expected to practice 30-40 minutes a day. Pep band may be part of the course requirement during football and basketball seasons. Rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the course requirement and constitute a portion of the grade. Philharmonic Orchestra Grades 9-12 1.0 credit Prerequisite: 2 years of middle school orchestra or 1 year of private lessons Available Instruments - Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass This course is open to all orchestral string musicians who want to improve their skills through large group performance. Emphasis is on growth in technical proficiency, full orchestral literature and performance. Students will be expected to practice 20-30 minutes a day Rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the course requirement and constitute a portion of the grade. Chamber Orchestra Grades 9-12 1.0 Credit Prerequisite: Audition Required Available Instruments - Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass This advanced course is designed for the experienced orchestral string musician who wants to improve his/her skills through group performance. Students will be expected to practice 30-40 minutes a day. Emphasis is on growth in technical proficiency, string orchestral literature, and performance. Percussion Ensemble Grades 9-12 1.0 credit Prerequisite: Audition Required Available Instruments - Snare, Drumset, Timpani, Marimba, etc. Students will be expected to play various percussion instruments This course is designed for percussion ensemble performance as well as participation in concert, orchestral, wind ensemble and/ or pep band activities. Students with drum and mallet percussion experience (i.e. marimba, xylophone, and vibes) are encouraged to improve their skill in a large group setting. Students will be expected to practice 30-40 minutes a day. Rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the course requirement and constitute a portion of the grade. Jazz Ensemble Grades 9-12 1.0 credit Prerequisite: Audition Required/ Membership in another instrumental group may be required Available Instruments - Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Trombone, Bass Trombone, Trumpet, Drum Set, Piano, Guitar, Bass. This advanced course is designed for those students with an interest in performing jazz, Latin, and big band literature. Strict jazz ensemble instrumentation is observed. The group is designed to provide students with a thorough knowledge of jazz through performance. Students will be expected to practice 30-40 minutes a day. Rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the course requirement and constitute a portion of the grade. Marching Band - Large Ensemble (Fall semester only) Grades 9-12.5 credit Prerequisite: Non-Audition. Membership in another music group is required. Available Instruments - Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Trumpet, French Horn, Mellophone, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Color Guard, and Percussion This is an after school band course that is designed to incorporate both the indoor/concert and outdoor/athletic aspects of musical performance. A required one- week on-site marching band camp will be held in the first week of August and is required for membership in the marching band. Students will be expected to practice 30-40 minutes a day. Performances at football games, parades and marching competitions are mandatory and will constitute a major portion of the grade. Additional Audition Information All auditions will be one on one. Any student wishing to audition may play 60 seconds of their own prepared solo IN ADDITION to the previous audition material.
