March 2013 Page 1 The Guilder The Newsletter of the Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists www.agocolumbus.org The American Guild of Organists promotes the organ in its historic and evolving roles, encourages excellence in the performance of organ and choral music, and provides a forum for the mutual support, inspiration, education, and certification of Guild members. OUR NEXT PROGRAMS The Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presents Andrew Kotylo in concert on Sunday, March 10, 3:00 p.m. at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 501 East Broad Street, Columbus. Kotylo will play works by Jongen, Saint-Seans, Hebble, Wright, Brahms and Rossini. There will also be a Masterclass focusing on the organ music of Searle Wright at Broad Street United Methodist on Saturday, March 9, 10:00 a.m. to noon. (Welcome and refreshments at 9:30 a.m.). Searle Wright's career as an organist was unique in the pipe organ world as he combined his classical skills as teacher, performer and composer with his outstanding skills as a theater organist, for which he was well respected around the world. Kotylo's workshop will combine a multimedia presentation with photos, musical examples and audio as well as at the console. In addition, each participant will receive a detailed handout on his presentation. Kindly respond to events@agocolumbus.org For more information, contact Brian Johnson (tuttiiv@aol.com).

Dean s Message Page 2 It is safe to say that all who attended one of the two workshops offered at the Muller Pipe Organ facilities came away with a much better understanding of organ design and construction. Many thanks are due to the Mullers for their gracious hospitality and to Stan Osborn and Scott Hayes for their informative presentations. Also, John Bryan gave us insight into the long and sometimes rocky journey from conception to realization in the planning for a new instrument. Thank you all! This month, we can look forward to Andrew Kotylo's seminar and recital at the Broad Street United Methodist Church, hosted by board member Brian Johnson, and it is not too early to plan on attending Marti Rideout's workshop on Building Parish Music Programs (April 13 and 15), and our April 21st Student Recital.
