How to Use the Electronic Larynx 1. Place the EL sounding button firmly against your neck. 2. While pressing the On/Off button, shape the desired words using your tongue and lips. The tones produced will resonate in the mouth. Helpful Hints Find your sweet spot. This is the location on your neck that will produce the best vibration and result in loudest and clearest sound. Use the EL in different spots on your neck to determine your sweet spot. To achieve the best sound, hold the EL firmly against your neck, speak in short phrases and turn the Nu-Vois I off at the end of each phrase. If possible, learn to operate your EL in your non-dominate hand. This will allow you to use your other hand for writing and other tasks. Nu-Vois XTRA-VOIS Operations Manual P a g e 5

Caring for your Electronic Larynx Your EL can be cleaned by wiping the unit as needed with a damp cloth. Use a dry toothbrush to clean the groove below the sound button and the nose cap. Do not attempt to clean with compressed air. This can cause damage to the sound button. Petroleum products, oils, WD-40 should never be used on your EL. The battery contacts can be cleaned gently if they become tarnished or discolored. Use a pencil eraser and slight pressure to clean off the battery contacts. Be sure to remove any dust after cleaning. Be careful not to bend the battery contacts as this could cause damage to your device. The Xtra-Vois device will operate on a 9 VDK rechargeable battery. Nu-Vois XTRA-VOIS Operations Manual P a g e 9

Warnings and Precautions For optimum performance, a 9.6 vdc Nickel Metal Hydrate rechargeable battery should be used. The electronic larynx will operate with other rechargeable batteries, but the volume and battery life will not be as good. After installing the battery, do not over tighten the battery cap. Overtightening can make the battery cap difficult to open in the future. Do not attempt to recharge alkaline batteries with the included charger. Do not allow any liquid to get into any of the openings on your Xtra-Vois unit. Nu-Vois XTRA-VOIS Operations Manual P a g e 10

Common Problems and Solutions Problem Device is not making any sound Possible Solution Make sure the battery is positioned correctly and fully charged. Device is only making a slight sound Beneath the nose cap is a rubber diaphragm. The center hole should be seated in the groove of the piston and should slightly bounce to touch. 1. Make sure piston is seeded in diaphragm and that diaphragm is not damaged. 2. Be sure your nose cap is correctly adjusted. Low tone needs more volume Unscrew the nose cap slightly. Device is low on battery Higher tones tend to draw less power than lower tones. If you are low on battery, you may be able to extend the battery life in your device by using a higher tone until you can recharge the battery.
