Biographical Note Joseph Gurt was an Associate Professor of Music at Eastern Michigan University from 1967 to 2002. Before beginning his teaching career, Gurt received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Julliard School of Music in 1958 and 1959 respectively. Gurt was a skilled vocalist, but his main instrument of study was the piano. He taught private lessons at 92nd Street Y Music School in New York City. At Eastern Michigan University Gurt taught piano lessons, instrumental accompaniment and worked with vocalists as their private accompanists. Gurt performed in several locations off campus including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and with his own group Jelinek-Gurt Duo, which featured cello and piano. Scope and Contents The Joseph Gurt Papers contains biographical information, concert programs, clippings, and several performance recordings. The collection is arranged alphabetically and is divided into two series. Records date from 1967 to 2002. The two series that are included in the collection are: Career and Legacy, and Performance Recordings. The Career and Legacy series contains two subseries of concert programs and special performances.
