4 Chapter or Essay in an Edited Book This is used for sources within textbooks and other books with an editor. You should use the author of the work you are citing within the book. 7 Web Sites Web sites do not have page numbers. You will need to check for page numbers in the publication information for library research database articles. 9 Images from Google and Other Web Sites If the image doesn t have title provided, you should create a brief one. (: Red Boat ) Check with your teacher if the URL is required in image citations. 14 Other Important MLA Information Checklist for MLA format o 8 ½ x 11 inch paper o Double spacing throughout, including headings and Works Cited page o 12 point, Times New Roman font o Page numbers: ½ inch above the text or heading on each page. Include your last name, formatted. o Margins: 1 inch on all sides o Paper title: Centered. Do not underline it. Checklist for your Works Cited Page It is the last page of your paper, numbered consecutively with the other pages in your paper. Each citation should be alphabetized according to the last name of the author or the first letter of the article title. Do not alphabetize by The, An or A. Use the next available word. Each individual citation should be double spaced with a hanging indent. The entire Works Cited page should also be double spaced. Depending on the type of resource, Print or Web is part of each citation. MLA Abbreviations n.p.: no publisher. Use when you can t locate the publisher of a source. n.d.: no date. Use when you can t locate the date of a source. Month Abbreviations Months should be abbreviated in your Works Cited page (except for May, June and July) but spelled out in the text of your paper. 16 Quotations Block Quote Checklist o You are quoting more than four lines of text. o No quotation marks are used! o Your parenthetical citation will be at the end of the last sentence outside of the period. o Type an introductory sentence for the block quote at the left margin, not indented. This sentence ends in a colon. o On the next line, type in your block quote, double spaced. o Here s how to indent the body of your block quote: o On the View tab at the top of your Word document, click Ruler so there is a check mark in this box. o Highlight the text of your block quote and move the rule to 1 to properly indent.

18 Inserting Direct Quotations into Your Paper 1. Read the source, find a sentence or two which supports your thesis. This is the supporting evidence which becomes your quote. 2. Create an introductory sentence for the quote. 3. Insert your supporting evidence sentences into your paper. Note: The parenthetical citation always goes at the end of the sentence. o Opening quotation mark o Type in your supporting evidence sentence(s) o Opening parentheses for parenthetical citation o Create the appropriate parenthetical citation, depending on your source o Close parentheses for parenthetical citation o Period o Closing quotation mark Opening quotation mark Closing quotation mark Old Major, the prize boar who first passes on his ideas about animal oppression by the humans and the future rebellion of the animals, is commonly thought to represent either Karl Marx, one of the authors of the 1848 Communist Manifesto or Vladimir Lenin, who adapted Marx s ideas to the Russian Revolution (Fitzpatrick).
