CONCERTS 2018-2019 72nd season World-class chamber music concerts in the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles www.musicinpeebles.org.uk

Welcome In welcoming you to our 72nd season of concerts, I am delighted to announce three major new initiatives in the ongoing development of Music in Peebles. First, we are very honoured that the distinguished violinist Gina McCormack has agreed to become our first-ever Patron. Already a good friend of Music in Peebles, we look forward to collaborating with Gina on a number of exciting projects through this new relationship, beginning with our first Patron s Concert in February 2019. Secondly, Music in Peebles is undertaking its first ever co-commission of a new work. Peebles composer Esther Swift s new piece for harp and string quartet, with accompanying film by her brother Tom, will receive its premiere in our opening concert on 2nd September. Finally, we have a great new benefit for members of Music in Peebles. As well as entry to all our concerts, your membership will also gain you half-price admission to concerts promoted by Biggar Music. All this, and another season of eight superb concerts featuring the very best in chamber music from the 13th century to the present day, played by world-renowned ensembles and some of the finest of the new generation. As always, the best way to enjoy and be part of all this is to become a member of Music in Peebles. Membership is open to everyone and offers a substantial saving in addition to other benefits. Whether or not you take advantage of this, I look forward to welcoming you to our concerts. John Fox President, Music in Peebles Music in Peebles is supported by

Sunday 2nd September 2018 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Esther Swift (harp) & The Brodick Quartet Ben Norris & Katrina Lee (violins) Rhoslyn Lawton (viola) [on right], Alice Allen (cello) Esther Swift Trad. Tchaikovsky New commission (1st performance) Wood Works - Nordic Folk Tunes String Quartet No.1 in D, Op.11 Music in Peebles is proud to unveil its first cocommission with Enterprise Music Scotland. A new work by Peebles harpist, singer-songwriter and composer Esther Swift will be accompanied by film produced by her brother Tom. Esther says I ve always been really inspired by nature in my compositions and try to interweave natural patterns and sounds into my minimalist, folk, jazz and dance inspired writing style. This project is a chance for me to delve into the complex and relentless sound world of water using string quartet, voice and harp. Esther will be joined by the Brodick Quartet, consisting of four of Scotland s finest young string players. The quartet will play a selection of Nordic folk tunes arranged by the Danish String Quartet for their hugely successful album Wood Works. The concert ends with the everpopular First String Quartet by Tchaikovsky, with its famous Andante Cantabile second movement, often heard in its arrangement for string orchestra.

Tuesday 2nd October 2018 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Leon McCawley (piano) Beethoven Piano Sonata No.30 in E, Op.109 Beethoven Piano Sonata No.31 in A flat, Op.110 Schubert Piano Sonata No.18 in G, D.894 Leon McCawley found early fame through success in the BBC Young Musician Competition (piano winner, 1990), the Leeds International Piano Competition (2nd prize, 1993) and the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna (1st prize, 1993). Now one of the UK s foremost pianists, his performances and extensive recordings of Classical, Romantic and 20th century works have won worldwide praise. For this recital, Leon McCawley has chosen three of the greatest works in the entire repertoire, written within six years of each other by two of the greatest composers ever to write for the piano. The two Beethoven sonatas are among his most profound and have a definite valedictory quality, while the Schubert specialist Imogen Cooper has described D.894 as one of the rare completely serene sonatas that Schubert wrote. Leon McCawley s renowned, thoughtful approach is ideally suited to these towering masterpieces. an exemplary piano soloist with commanding technical authority and a shining, enriched tone The Guardian

Thursday 15th November 2018 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Pomegranate Piano Trio Fenella Barton (violin), Rebecca Hepplewhite (cello) Andrew West (piano) Clara Schumann Ravel Beethoven Piano Trio in G minor, Op.17 Piano Trio in A Minor Piano Trio in B Flat, Op.97 ( Archduke ) The Pomegranate Trio is a collaboration between awardwinning chamber musicians and has acquired an enviable reputation for fine performances throughout the UK, including regular visits to Scotland. Any performance of Beethoven s Archduke Trio is a great occasion (the composer himself considered it one of his finest works) and in these experienced hands it will be unforgettable. This carefully crafted programme also brings together one of Clara Schumann s most substantial works (and widely regarded as one of her finest) and a 20th century masterpiece in the form of Ravel s Trio, written in 1914, shortly before he enlisted into the French Army for the First World War. [Beethoven's] 'Ghost' trio was played magnificently Anthony Payne, composer sparklingly incisive and characterful playing New York Times

Tuesday 4th December 2018 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Rebecca Tavener & Libby Crabtree (sopranos) Anne Lewis (mezzo-soprano), Bill Taylor (harps) Music for Advent and Christmas Canty is Scotland s only professional medieval music group and comprises the regular female singers with Cappella Nova, Scotland s leading early music vocal ensemble. This programme of music for Yuletide includes rare and lovely medieval Scottish pieces from the St Andrews Music Book, a delicious feast of English medieval carols, glorious chant from St Hildegard of Bingen, harp tunes and dances as well as traditional carols. There will also be some delightful new settings of medieval Christmas texts by Nichola LeFanu and James MacMillan. The three expert voices and virtuoso harp of Canty will lead you on a journey from the sound world of the 13th century, evoking the earliest Christmas traditions, to the present day. Voices carrying clearly through the stonework like messengers from another age The Herald The quality of the voices is outstanding Early Music

Sunday 13th January 2019 2.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Navarra String Quartet Magnus Johnston & Marije Johnston (violins) Simone van der Giessen (viola), Brian O'Kane (cello) Pēteris Vasks String Quartet No.4 Ravel String Quartet in F major Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D min, D.810 ('Death and the Maiden') Since its formation in 2002, the Navarra Quartet has built an international reputation as one of the most dynamic and poetic string quartets of today. They collaborated closely with Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks for their recording of his first three quartets, a recording described by critics as stunning. In his fourth quartet, written in 1999, Vasks reflects on the 20th century in sombre mood, but healed by love s power and idealism. The Ravel quartet, suave, sensuous and full of French panache, is one of the most popular chamber works of the 20th century. The programme ends with one of the greatest and best-loved of all string quartets, which takes its theme from Schubert s song of the same name, and which was written as Schubert contemplated his own early death. The playing is nothing short of sensational, the precision and enormous dynamics absolutely thrilling Yorkshire Post

Sunday 10th February 2019 2.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Patron s Concert Gina McCormack (violin) & Nigel Clayton (piano) with students and recent graduates from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Young Musicians Showcase Our newly appointed Patron, Gina McCormack, is already well known to Music in Peebles audiences, her recitals for us having been highlights of recent seasons. One of the UK s leading violinists, Gina was for many years leader of first the Sorrel then the Maggini String Quartet, and now pursues a busy career as a soloist and chamber musician. She is also a highly respected teacher, having positions at both the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Royal Northern College of Music. With Gina will be her regular duo partner, Nigel Clayton, another Music in Peebles favourite. In addition to his career as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician, he is Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music and Visiting Professor at the North East of Scotland Music School. It would be hard to imagine two more reliable guides to the stars of the future than Gina and Nigel and in this special concert they will showcase some of the finest players to emerge from the RCS.

Tuesday 5th March 2019 7.30pm, Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Peebles Red Priest Piers Adams (recorders), Adam Summerhayes (violin) Angela East (cello), David Wright (harpsichord) The Baroque Bohemians Music by: Biber, Byrd, Campra, Handel, Mielczewski, Richard Nicholson, Telemann & Vivaldi The adventurous British group Red Priest plays baroque music with virtuosity and attitude and sets out to challenge perceived notions of how standard works of this period should be performed. In this programme, Red Priest explores the connections - real and imagined - between gypsy musicians and the master composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Were early baroque maestri inspired by the insane virtuosity and improvisational skills of the travelling gypsies of the time? How might the music of Handel or Vivaldi sound in the hands of an 18th century gypsy band? Exploring the Eastern European folk influences ever present in the music of Telemann, and the recently discovered Uhrovska Collection of gypsy dance tunes from 1730, Red Priest combines its trademark baroque dynamism with true gypsy mayhem! supreme musicians The Observer they are sure to introduce a new audience to baroque music.
