UNIT TWO Synaesthesia is a neurological condition in which a person experiences sensations (such as sound or colour) in their mind when they hear or read certain triggers (such as letters and numbers), or vice versa. Synaesthesia can be expressed in many different ways. For example, when Ned reads the letter J he thinks of the colour red, when Lysa sees the number 2 she thinks of the colour yellow, and Jon thinks Wednesdays are bright blue. Lucy is a talented flautist playing in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. When she hears musical notes, she sees specific colours in her head. The music lines below show the colour association she makes with each music note. The colour of each note is on the right. c = violet d = indigo e = sky blue f = dark green g = orange a = amber b = yellow = pink c d e f g a b E F = aqua E = light blue ITEM 3 (***) F = bright green uring rehearsal one day, Lucy reads the following sequence of notes: b, f, g, a,, g, F, d, c raw and colour in the notes she is hearing on the lines below. ITEM 4 (***) Lucy is reading a new piece of music, shown below: Write the sequence of colours (e.g, violet, yellow, aqua) that correspond to the piece of music given.............

Ginny shouts out the following sequence: Thursday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Monday, Sunday, Friday What sequence of emotions will Jack think of?......... Marking Scheme Unit Three Unit Three In this unit, students were required to interpret three cartoons based on women and relationships. Es Present in Unit: 5 Interpreting the meaning of pictures/ illustrations 29 omparing, contrasting 43 nalysing Item 1:. The man in the cartoon is assuring his wife of her beauty, but has misplaced her glasses, so obviously cannot quite see her properly. He asks his wife if she has seen them, and she replies in the negative despite the fact that she is clutching them behind her back. This should have indicated to students that the women is hiding her husband s glasses on purpose so that he still finds her beautiful, because if he could see her properly he would probably realise that she has lost some of her looks since they first met! Item 2:. Students should have realised that this cartoon supports the idea that beauty is based on appearance the women is purposely ensuring her husband s sight is impaired so that he still finds her beautiful in her old age. If the cartoon supported the idea that beauty wasn t based on appearances, the woman would be unconcerned with her aesthetic appeal. Item 3:. Married couples often call each other pet names, hence the fact that the couple in the cartoon refer to each other as darling and dear indicate that they are probably married, or at least in a close and loving relationship. The fact that they are elderly, wearing similar clothes and in need of glasses does not indicate a close relationship at all. Item 4:. ased on the fact that the woman in the cartoon is emphasising that she wants to quit blokes (men), students should have realised she is addicted to them. This is why they have been compared to cigarettes emerging from a cigarette-type packet, they share the same addictive quality. This marking scheme is continued on the next page...

Marking Scheme Unit Three...This answer guide is continued from the previous page. Item 5:. The cartoon could quite likely appear in either a light women s or men s magazine that covered things like relationships, as it is lampooning one of society s beliefs about some women. Similarly, given the sardonic nature of the cartoon, it may appear in a satirical magazine that covers pop culture. Given the negative way that it portrays women s dependence on and weakness for men, it would probably not appear in a magazine promoting feminist ideals. Item 6:. In this cartoon, the man is clearly badly injured, and despite his wife s pleas for him to seek medical help, he stubbornly refuses. Therefore, students should have concluded that the most appropriate caption would be Why women live longer than men because they are not too unreasonably stubborn so as to not seek medical attention when they need it. Item 7:. The man in the cartoon is being unreasonable despite the obvious severity of his injury, he doesn t want medical help and instead wants to continue indulging in dangerous activities, as indicated by his holding of the pick. The woman is trying to get him to seek medical help a logical thing to do in the solution. s such, students should have recognised that she was acting reasonably. Item 8:. The man in artoon 3 is acting stubbornly he is being obstinate and unyielding in his refusal to go to the doctor in spite of his obvious need to. Item 9:. artoon 2 implies that women are addicted to men and can t resist them despite the fact that they may end up with their hearts broken. This portrays women as the weaker sex. Item 10: Of the three cartoons, artoon 1 is the only one in which the couple clearly have a loving and affectionate relationship. They have been together for a long time, as indicated by their age and conversation, and call each other terms of endearment. There is no hostility between them, unlike in artoon 3; and neither gender is shown as having power over the other, as in artoon 2. Powered by TPF (www.tcpdf.org)
