QS Skill evelopment Lesson: Visual Literacy ctivity escription: The first activity in this rotation lesson is designed to improve each student s performance on the Writing Task. It requires students to read through the provided passage and locate the incorrectly spelled words. When students rewrite the passage, they are asked to make it more descriptive. In the second activity, students are required to answer short response questions based on the information provided about musical notes. The third activity is a multiple choice unit based on three cartoons about women and relationships. Purpose of ctivity: To allow students to practise their visual literacy skills in QS-style activities. Teaching Notes: fter students have completed each section, go through the answers thoroughly with them to ensure they understand how to reach the correct answer. Encourage students to volunteer their own answers, and if possible, start a group discussion about different answers. While the second activity contains colour, it is not necessary to print the worksheets in colour as the colours of the notes are provided.

Synaesthesia can be expressed in many different ways. Marking Scheme Unit Three Unit Three In this unit, students were required to interpret three cartoons based on women and relationships. Es Present in Unit: 5 Interpreting the meaning of pictures/ illustrations 29 omparing, contrasting 43 nalysing Item 1:. The man in the cartoon is assuring his wife of her beauty, but has misplaced her glasses, so obviously cannot quite see her properly. He asks his wife if she has seen them, and she replies in the negative despite the fact that she is clutching them behind her back. This should have indicated to students that the women is hiding her husband s glasses on purpose so that he still finds her beautiful, because if he could see her properly he would probably realise that she has lost some of her looks since they first met! Item 2:. Students should have realised that this cartoon supports the idea that beauty is based on appearance the women is purposely ensuring her husband s sight is impaired so that he still finds her beautiful in her old age. If the cartoon supported the idea that beauty wasn t based on appearances, the woman would be unconcerned with her aesthetic appeal. Item 3:. Married couples often call each other pet names, hence the fact that the couple in the cartoon refer to each other as darling and dear indicate that they are probably married, or at least in a close and loving relationship. The fact that they are elderly, wearing similar clothes and in need of glasses does not indicate a close relationship at all. Item 4:. ased on the fact that the woman in the cartoon is emphasising that she wants to quit blokes (men), students should have realised she is addicted to them. The cartoon could quite likely appear in either a light women s or men s magazine that covered things like relationships, as it is lampooning one of society s beliefs about some women. Similarly, given the sardonic nature of the cartoon, it may appear in a satirical magazine that covers pop culture. Given the negative way that it portrays women s dependence on and weakness for men, it would probably not appear in a magazine promoting feminist ideals. Item 6:. In this cartoon, the man is clearly badly injured, and despite his wife s pleas for him to seek medical help, he stubbornly refuses. Therefore, students should have concluded that the most appropriate caption would be Why women live longer than men because they are not too unreasonably stubborn so as to not seek medical attention when they need it. Item 7:. The man in the cartoon is being unreasonable despite the obvious severity of his injury, he doesn t want medical help and instead wants to continue indulging in dangerous activities, as indicated by his holding of the pick. The woman is trying to get him to seek medical help a logical thing to do in the solution. s such, students should have recognised that she was acting reasonably. Item 8:. The man in artoon 3 is acting stubbornly he is being obstinate and unyielding in his refusal to go to the doctor in spite of his obvious need to. Item 9:. artoon 2 implies that women are addicted to men and can t resist them despite the fact that they may end up with their hearts broken. This portrays women as the weaker sex. Item 10: Of the three cartoons, artoon 1 is the only one in which the couple clearly have a loving and affectionate relationship. They have been together for a long time, as indicated by their age and conversation, and call each other terms of endearment.
