New Horizons Band in the Pines New Member Information We're so glad you are here! We hope you will find joy, excitement and new friends through making music. If you are brand new to music making and aren t even sure what those little black marks mean on the paper, you are in the right place. If you played years (decades) ago, but haven t looked at the instrument since, you are in the right place. If you played another instrument, but want to learn something new, you are in the right place. If you ve been taking lessons recently or brushing up on your own, you are in the right place!!! If you play quite well, but want a more relaxed atmosphere, you, too are in the right place! You may be nervous. Can I do this?? Will my arthritis be a problem? I failed flute in junior high. Will I have enough air? I don t want to make a fool out of myself!. Our promise to you is to help you learn and to help you replace these questions with, Yes, I can! If you ve never played before, you may be nervous about learning to read music. A lot of people wonder about the mystery of those little black marks on the paper. You will learn them one at a time; when you are actually using the symbols on the page, they begin to make sense. Before you know it, seeing a note on a line will cause your fingers to move in a particular way without you having to think about it! NHB in the Pines will help you find an instrument. We will either help you find a music teacher (lessons on your own) to get you started or have a beginners group class. When you feel comfortable, you can join in with the concert band. If you are returning to your instrument, you may find some frustration, some exhilaration. You will be frustrated that your muscles get tired quickly and that they sometimes don t seem to remember what to do. You will be exhilarated by again hearing and feeling the sounds you used to make and that you loved so much! You will be frustrated at what you have forgotten, but exhilarated by what you remember! Specifically, everyone will find that their muscles get tired quickly and that the tone isn t what they expect. Brass players will most likely find that they miss a lot of notes and shake a bit. Saxes and clarinets will squeak again. Flute players will have very tired shoulders holding up that instrument. Percussionists won t have the control and finesse that they used to have. But guess what? It will come back VERY quickly!! You ll be pleased and surprised!

New Horizons Band In The Pines Provides an entrance into the world of group instrumental music making for adult beginners Provides a way back into playing an instrument after several years or decades away from it. Is a non-competitive and non-intimidating musical environment in which Your best is good enough! (Roy Ernst, founder of the first New Horizons band) Is a social organization for adults who love music and want to work together to make the group happen Is for adults who enjoy making music!!! Band members include... Adults, 50ish and beyond, who want to play an instrument! Beginners, returnees, those who have studied for a while already! People of all ability levels, including professional musicians to those who started playing last year! Band Rehearsals are... NHB meets on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 pm., in Wellard Hall, room 101 at Sandhills Community College. Wellard Hall is the building directly across from Owens Auditorium. Fall Session September 2 to December 16 No rehearsal on Nov. 11 & 25 Spring Session TBD The fee for each Session is $60, this covers band music and directors. The directors provide music education and direct our concerts. Concerts... We will have concerts at least once a month. Last year we played at Penick Village, Chapel in the Pines, Belle Meade, The Senior Enrichment Center & Quail Haven Village We also have small groups that go out and performan. This Fall we will be adding Sacred Heart Church and Pine Knoll to our concert schedule and we will have a booth at Autumnfest. The band is also a social organization... The group is for adults who love music and want to make music together! Break time is also social time. Some people may go out together after rehearsals. You may go to Band Camps together. NHB in the Pines has social gatherings during the year. Last year we had a fall dinner, Holiday party, Mardi Gras dinner and spring picnic.

NHB in the Pines teaching philosophy is... Make music from the first! (You don t have to have all the notes in place to play musically) Rehearsals will always circle back around and review, both to reinforce the learning and because, as adults, life and work may occasionally interfere and students may miss a session. Rehearsals will offer a variety of music on several levels. You may move ahead in playing ability with practice. Your Best is Good Enough!!! Each week you will need to hand in a practice chart signed by your children or other family members (Just kidding!!!) Thoughts from New Horizons International Music Association Music is not just for young people and professionals; it is for all mature adults who want to take part Anyone can learn to play music at a level that will bring a sense of accomplishment and the ability to perform in a group What You Need... Music Stand Although one doesn't need to bring one to rehearsal, you will need a music stand for performances. New Horizons Band International The first New Horizons program in 1991 was a band, followed by New Horizons orchestra a few years later. New Horizons Band (NHB) program was designed at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY to serve the older adult population. A minimum age of 50 was arbitrarily set as a guideline. Many New Horizons programs started since are designed specifically for senior adults and have minimum age requirements, but others are open to adults of any age. The targeted age range and requirements, if any, are a local decision. To-date there are 214 New Horizons programs in the US and Canada. Check out New Horizons International Music Association website and discover how you could participate in a New Horizon program while you are on vacation, or information on attending New Horizon music camps throughout the US. New Horizons Band in the Pines The Moore County New Horizons Band(NHB) started in January 2008, under the direction of Carole Skau, Jan Gustafson and David Seiberling. There were 12 members in the first band and there were about 35 members in 2013-2014. NHB is a 501 (c)3 tax exempt organization and a member of New Horizons Band International. We are supported by the Arts Council of Moore County and the North Carolina Arts Council with funding from the state of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art. Our web site is www.nhbinthepines.com.

Mission Statement Our members are our most important assets in the New Horizons Band in the Pines. Our organization is committed to creating a positive and a non-competitive environment for those adults, 50ish and beyond. This organization is to promote music for life by offering band instrument instruction, rehearsal and performances in a relaxed and supportive environment. The goal of the New Horizons Band in the Pines is to play music at retirement locations and nursing homes in the area and bring joy thru music to those in these locations. Without our members and conductors this is not possible.
