ROGRAM NOTES The title o this iece is insired y the legendary Standing Stone structures located near the village o Callanish (Calanais) on the Isle o Leis in the Outer Herides, or Western Isles, o Scotland. Knon variously as the Standing Stones, the Callanish Stones, or the Herides Stonehenge, the ormation consists o an arrangement o dozens o huge stones in the orm o a cross ith a circle in the middle. Dating rom aroximately 900 600 B.C., this mysterious site and its original urose have long een the source o conecture and seculation. As local legend has it, hen the giants o old ho lived on the island reused to e Christianized, St. Kieran turned them into stone. Another more commonly held elie says hen the sun rose on midsummer morn, the shining one alked along the stone avenue, suorting the notion that the Standing Stones ere in act some tye o early astronomical oservatory. To this day, the Standing Stones continue to intrigue and ascinate eole. Each year, thousands o visitors travel to the Isle o Leis to oserve the silent, inscrutale maesty o these monolithic structures.
