INSTALLATION AND USE OF THE TPW300 SERIES INDEX 1.0 Overview 2.0 Power supply 3.0 Settings 4.0 Installation 5.0 Graphic signal equalization 6.0 Accessories 7.0 Technical data 8.0 Notes Please read this handbook carefully when installing the unit. The manufacturer shall not be held responsible for any damage or injury caused by use, even correct, of its products. The data and characteristics of the product may be modified without prior notice 2

1.0 OVERVIEW Thank you for buying this product. Check the contents of the packaging carefully. It contains: The TPW300 T/R transceiver This handbook The code ADM001 mains adapter for the TPW300T - The mains cable for the TPW300R - The kit for fastening to a 19" rack (If ordered separately, as option) The TPW300 product is a dual transmitter and receiver for remote transmission via CAT5 UTP cable of a RGBHsVs graphic signal. Alternatively, three video signals or one video and one Y/C, or a Y, Cb, Cr component signal can be sent. H and V synchronisms are managed only at TTL level. This means that 75Ω negative TV synchronisms cannot transit on the H and V BNC. A composite synchronism, always at TTL level, can transit on the H BNC. 3

TPW300T - TPW300R TYPICAL SYSTEM 4

2.0 POWER SUPPLY The TPW300T transmitter is powered only using the code ADM001 AC/AC adapter provided. Use of any other adapter could cause damage to the appliance. Any operations must be carried out by qualified personnel. The adapter must be inserted in a 230 Vac/50Hz current outlet The TPW300R receiver must be powered at 230 Vac 50Hz using the cable provided. The cable must be inserted in the related panel plug on the left-hand side of the back of the unit. The panel plug is complete with fuse-holder for 5X20 fuses. If the fuse blows, replace with a fuse with the same rating as specified on the back of the unit. (T 500mA). All operations must be carried out by qualified personnel only who must be informed of the risks of electric shock In some countries, the power plug must be adapted to local standards. The wires are identified according to the following coding: - Brown PHASE (Identified with the letter L, may be red) - Blue NEUTRAL (Identified with the letter N, may be black) - Yellow/Green GROUND (Identified with the letter E, may be green) 5

3.0 SETTINGS The TPW300T transmitter has an internal jumper for selection of the synchronism entering on the H BNC. To set the jumper, the cover must be removed. To do this, back off the 4 upper screws to the sides of the unit. The jumper is identified by the caption W1 W1 in position 2-1 W1 in position 2-3 : Synchronism on H BNC of the composite TTL type : Synchronism on H BNC of the horizontal TTL type The unit is factory-set as follows: W1 in position 2-3 : Synchronism on H BNC of the horizontal TTL type Transit with composite synchronism is to be avoided as the possibility of Horiz. Adj. is lost (See chap. 5.1). Use this possibility only for short sections of the CAT5 cable. 6

The TPW300R receiver also has an internal jumper for selection according to the synchronism entering on the H BNC of the transmitter unit. To set the jumper, the cover must be removed. To do this, back off the 4 upper screws to the sides of the unit. The jumper is identified by the caption W1 W1 in position H : Synchronism on H BNC of the horizontal TTL type W1 in position COMP : Synchronism on H BNC of the composite TTL type The unit is factory-set as follows: W1 in position H : Synchronism on H BNC of the horizontal TTL type The TPW300R also features a set of 8 jumpers on the bottom of the unit. Seven of these are used to compensate for losses of the CAT5 cable and the eighth is used for termination of the CAT5 cable. The possibility of terminating or not the CAT5 cable makes it possible to set several receiving units in parallel. In this case, termination is set to ON only on the unit that closes the chain (See chap. 4.3). 7

4.0 INSTALLATION Always pay particular attention to the ground connection of the sources and destinations. (See par. 4.2) A classical installation is characterized by a graphic source, usually a computer, to be forwarded to a destination. The means of transmission between the transmitting unit and receiving unit is a CAT5 cable. The CAT5 cable is the standard cable used for local computer networks and consists of unshielded twisted pairs (UTP). With AWG26 CAT5 cable, a distance of up to 430mt can be covered without any appreciable loss; using AWG24 cable, the distance can reach 550mt while using AWG22 cable, it rises to 680mt. Note that the distances indicated above are valid for low resolution signals and/or composite type, Y/C or Y, Cb, Cr component television signals. For signals with a higher resolution, type SVGA, XGA etc., the distance that can be covered is reduced almost proportionally to the increase in resolution. Refer to the diagram and table provided in Chap. 5.0 (GRAPHIC SIGNAL EQUALIZATION). CAT6 cable can also be used. In this case, the overall performance of the system will be considerably higher. 4.1 CAT5 cable connection The 4 pairs of the CAT5 cable must be connected to the LINE IN terminals of the receiving unit and LINE OUT terminals of the transmitting unit. Usually, the 4 pairs are connected to terminals 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8. According to the color of each pair, the installation technician must connect, transmitting and receiving side, the same pair on terminals of the same name. 8

In the case of the TPW300 product, all 4 pairs must be connected. Matching between the number of the terminal and the signal in transit is shown in the table below. N Conn. TPW300T TPW300R 1 R+ R+ 2 R- R- 3 G+ G+ 4 G- G- 5 B+ B+ 6 B- B- 7 Sync+ Sync.+ 8 Sync.- Sync.- 4.2 Graphic signal connection The R, G and B graphic signals must be standard with 0.7Vpp at 75Ω analogue output. Using a HDD15p.m./5 BNC adapter cable (such as the Elpro ADC201) connect the graphic output of the computer to the BNC identified as VIDEO IN R, G, B, H(Comp.) and V of the TPW300T. The signals are DC coupled. This means that any DC superimposed on the input signals will be found in the output of the TPW300R 9

Take care not to invert the H (horizontal) and V (vertical) synchronisms. if the cable that carries the signals is more than 20mt long, amplification is recommended before connecting these to the TPW300T. For this purpose, use the Elpro WS300/2 product installed at the start of the section of the cable. The graphic destination must be connected to the BNC VIDEO OUT R, G, B, H(Comp.) and V of the TPW300R unit. 10

For optimal system performance, all the ground connections of the source, of the TPW300R and of the destination must be as equipotential as possible. Different ground potentials may cause faults TPW300 R / T TYPICAL CONNECTION 11

4.3 Connection of several TPW300R receivers in cascade If required by the type of system, several receivers can be connected in cascade. This may be useful when two or three destinations, even at a distance, are to be connected to a source. 12

In this case, the CAT5 cable must be terminated only on the last TPW300R that closes the chain. The jumper on the bottom in pos. 8 CAT5 INPUT TERMINATION must be set to ON. 13

5.0 GRAPHIC SIGNAL EQUALIZATION The CAT5 cable introduces considerable losses on the signal in transit. A 100-mt long AWG26 CAT5 cable attenuates the 5 MHz components of the signal by 50%. As RGB signals do not accept deterioration, which would result in display with poor brightness, contrast and definition, for each installation one of the jumpers accessible from the bottom must be set in order to offset cable losses. The unit that performs compensation is the receiving unit, in our case the TPW300R. If several TPW300R units are connected in cascade, compensation must be provided independently on each unit. For correct setting of cable loss compensation, the user must know: -The type of CAT5 cable used (AWG26, AWG24 or AWG22) -The length of the cable. Referring to the table below, also present on the bottom of the TPW300R, set one of the 7 CAT5 compensation jumpers (meters) according to the length and type of cable to be compensated. 14

For example, if a 350-meter AWG24 CAT5 cable is used, set the jumper in position 6 to ON, or if a 150-meter AWG26 CAT5 cable is used, set the jumper in position 3 to ON. Only one jumper must be set to ON If the length of the section of CAT5 cable is between the two indicated in the table, the user must set the jumper that is closest. For example, if the system requires a 280-meter AWG22 CAT5 cable, jumper 4 must be set to ON. It is important to note that compensation of CAT5 cable losses on its own does not guarantee that the signal will reach its destination intact. For physical reasons, a high resolution signal is more prone to deterioration that a low resolution signal. In other words, a PAL or NTSC signal with a useful band of 5 MHz can transit on the 550-meter AWG24 CAT5 cable while, with the same type of cable, a signal of a workstation with a resolution of 1600X1280 cannot exceed 80 meters without deterioration of the image. When designing the system, make sure that the resolution of the signal in transit is compatible with the length and type of CAT5 cable 15

For this purpose, the diagram below shows, on the three X axes, the length of the 3 types of cable while transitable resolutions are shown on the Y axe. CAT5 LENGTH CABLES VS. RESOLUTIONS For each format used, be sure that the lenght of cable is compatible with data shown in the table. To improve all-round system performance in critical noise conditions, it may be useful to use CAT6 cable. The CAT6 cable has the same characteristics as the CAT5 but features improved insulation between the internal pairs. 16

5.1 Horiz. Adj. The RGBHsVs signal transits through the CAT5 cable with a certain delay due to the length of the cable and the signal processing circuits. This delay may be different for the two synchronisms in relation to the R, G and B analogue signals. For this reason, a Horiz. Adj. trimmer that makes it possible to center the image on a monitor or video-projector, has been provided on the front panel of the TPW300R receiver. Adjust the Horiz. Adj. trimmer only after setting the compensation jumper on the bottom of the unit. The possibility of Horiz. Adj. is de-activated in the case of transit with composite synchronism on the H BNC. Use this possibility only for short sections of CAT5 cable. 17

6.0 ACCESSORIES The following are provided with the unit: -The code ADM011 mains adapter for the TPW300T -The mains cable for the TPW300R The following are available on request: -An accessory kit for fastening of the unit to a 19" rack. fastening is possible with a single unit, using the tabs code 01069014, or with a second Elpro unit that is mechanically compatible with the first.
