Audition Information The Curious Savage and School House Rock Buena Fine Arts Productions Any performer interested in being a member of either The Curious Savage or the School House Rock ensemble must have good standing in attendance and academics. If a performer cannot carry their weight in classes they will need to devote time to those endeavors rather than these performances. The audition will be held on August 15 th beginning at 3:00 pm. Anyone interested in auditioning will need to sign up for an audition group by time. There will be only one sign up sheet. It will be posted on the production callboard in the Back Stage hallway of the Performing Arts Center (Main-stage). If someone interested in being a member of either ensemble cannot make this audition time, alternate arrangements must be made with Mrs. Duerk on or before August 14 th. The Audition Please do not be late for your audition time. [It is recommended that you arrive more than early enough to be calm, focused and put together for your audition.] At the audition, candidates will need a signed performer s agreement and a completed audition sheet. [Please put some thought into preparing these materials ahead of time.] You will need to prepare one of the readings below [Memorization is recommended]. Anyone interested in a role in School House Rock, must also sing one of the songs included below. [Memorization is recommended] Please dress appropriately; be polite and prepared for anything. Keep in mind your behavior and dress is considered as a part of the process. [It is customary to dress well for auditions. This shows respect for self, the auditors and the audition process. Also when we look good, we feel good and when we feel good, our performances are considerably better.] Audition Resources Sheet music, Mp3s and waves of the audition pieces will be available only in the Fine Arts computer lab (Band Room 6107) beginning Monday August 7 th. These as well as other resources will be in a folder labeled Into the School House located on the desktop. In the spirit of impartiality, students are expected to use these resources to prepare their audition. Instructors should only provide limited/basic input. Call Backs The callback list will be posted during the school day on August 16 th. The callback for The Curious Savage will begin at 3:00pm on that day. Actors will be asked to give a twenty-five second performance. In the twenty-five seconds, you should try and present as many well rounded, distinct and interesting characters as you dare. [Please prepare this performance using all of your acting tools physicality, varying vocalizations, dialects, non-verbal expression, etc.] Actors will also read and do scene work. Not everyone who may be cast will necessarily receive a callback. Those who do should be on time and dressed in comfortable rehearsal clothes. Be ready to work! Readings Reading 1 Dear, dear! My hair looks like the matted end of a cocoanut. You should have seen it last year. It was bright red. Then just to be different, I dyed it black with a white streak in the middle. I looked like nothing so much as a skunk. Finally, I just gave up and tinted it blue. It goes with everything. Reading 2 I hate everything in the world but most of all I hate lightning, skunk, cabbage, custard, mustard, spiders, blisters, girdles, mice, bees, keys, ragweed, chloroform, rhubarb, barnacles, bats, broken glass, eels, crumbs, drunks, tombstones, gallstones, salt and thunder. Reading 3 Surely you ve guessed by now that Hannibal and I are the only guests here free to leave. We couldn t tell you that in front of the others we pretend, to save their pride. I m sorry Mrs. Paddy. I d forgotten you were still here. I didn t mean you, anyhow. Reading 4 Well he d have to start before Christ was born and work right through the burning of Rome up to the burning of St. Joan and Savonarola. With time out, of course, for the Norman Conquest, the Crusades, the Hundred Years War the Thirty Years War and the Seven Years War. So he d have to work double time during the discovery of America, up to penicillin and bubble gum. But that s without deducting Federal tax state tax city tax school tax luxury tax and amusement tax. You d add a hundred years for that. Reading 5 Man was made all wrong. His stomach should be in back. When he bends it s in the way. When he kneels, his legs buckle out instead of folding neatly in front of him. And why should his nose be in front? It only gets in the way when he kisses. I guess God was in a hurry. Reading 6 It was learned today that the Senator s mother, Ethel P. Savage, the actress, was recently committed for irresponsible actions. Democratic leaders were quick to point out that this might explain the career of strange behavior in Congress by the Senator. Do you realize what this does to me politically? I ll never survive it never. Reading 7 Ten million dollars hidden from use does no one any good least of all you. It remains an ever present symptom of psychotic thinking. This is your opportunity to prove you are capable of making a rational decision. An intelligent mind recognizes defeat. Reading 8 There s nothing in my room you d want, Mrs. Savage. But I have something on me that I prize. My class ring. Inside it says, Let there be light. It has no value as gold goes, but as blood goes, it s a statistical treasure. My heart has pumped my blood through this ring every two minutes for ten years. That adds up roughly to about a hundred thousand gallons of blood. Reading 9 Suddenly - I am weary. I would like to rest I would like to be relieved of decision. I would like to be protected against uncertainty and accident. I would like to close my eyes at night and know that there are walls to guard my sleep. I want what everyone wants to want nothing. Reading 10 Jeffery sees only what he wants to see an excuse for not facing the future. Does Florence see that her child was taken from her? Does Fairy see what the mirror should tell her? No. They ve found refuge in an egg-shell world where you don t belong. For you see yourself clearly, I m sure. The impulse to live your life with courage was right. Go ahead with your memorial and don t be betrayed by the illusion of contentment. The door is open for you.
