ALIENATION 2013 Synopsis A man (Christos Stergioglou) driving an old-fashioned car is crossing the border. He is Greek and has passed his fifties. He is coming to Bulgaria to buy a child. Jorgos has prepared a secret compartment in the boot of the car masked as a gas tank so that he could smuggle the child. The baby is not born yet and the Greek needs to wait in a secluded house in the mountains together with the mother (Mariana Jikich), her deaf-mute brother (Ovanes Torosian) and the midwife. The birth is starting in a stormy night. Directed by Milko Lazarov

ALIENATION 2013 Directors statement by Milko Lazarov Alienation is my first feature film. I have been working on it since 2008. I was rather determined to tell a parable story than to follow the scary script of this grim business: selling a newborn baby to a foreigner. It s not a manual how to buy a baby in poor Bulgaria. It s an itinerary to how to lose yourself. The forest became my ancient desert in Alienation. Back in 2008 Goethe s Erlkoenig was my inspiration. Later the script was written and I was in a desperate search of an actor. I invited the renowned Greek actor Christos Stergioglou. He read the script and by surprise said Yes. This was one more key stone of the structure of Alienation I was building: my story, my outlook, my forest, my 16mm, no music, less dialogue, no more than whisperings and couple of Greek songs.

Mariana Jikich graduated at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts NATFA in Sofia, Bulgaria, in the class of Prof. Elena Baeva. She has played in many theatrical plays.
