ACCORDION, KANTELE, GUITAR, PIANO AND ORGAN Accordion S-t03c-5134 Accordion performance C (for students whose main subject is not Accordion) A student who completes this unit is expected to have gained the instrument technique and interpretative capability required for the repertoire at hand and have the capability for eventual further studies. Rehearsing repertoire in repertoire list 3 at least as follows: a) category 1 on a case-by-case basis b) 3 works from category 2 c) 3 works from category 3 d) 2 works from category 4 e) 2 works from category 5 f) 2 works from category 6 g) scales and arpeggios as necessary I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year II Performance examination: b) 1 work from category 2 b) 1 work from category 3 c) 1 work from category 4 d) 2 works in different styles from categories 5 and 6 II Examination board assessment, As per the curriculum for each subject Credited substituting studies Accordion performance C or comparable examination at university level S-t3b-5134 Accordion performance B A student who completes this unit is expected to have a command of the principal styles of music for the accordion and the instrument technique and artistic interpretative capability required for them, and have the capability to progress to Accordion performance A. Repertoire must be rehearsed to a sufficient and diverse extent. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire (about 20 30 min) to an examination board appointed by the university every academic year II Level B bachelor s recital: The repertoire performed at the level performance examination must be sufficiently demanding and diverse as a whole. In unclear cases, it is recommended that the student discuss the programme with the coordinating teacher well in advance. The level performance examination programme must last no more than 60 min and must include the following: 1. One or more works of Baroque music 6

2. A sonata, suite, set of variations or other extensive work written for the accordion 3. Contemporary music 4. A freely chosen set of miniatures focusing on a specific style or composer 5. A virtuoso work, whether an original work or an arrangement 6. A chamber music work or one or more movements from a concerto II Examination board assessment on a scale of 0 to 5 Accordion performance C (for students whose main subject is not the Accordion) S-t3a-5134 Accordion performance A A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of the instrument technique required for demanding concert repertoire - be familiar with a range of core repertoire sufficient for independent artistic work - be widely conversant with the various styles of music for the accordion and how they are interpreted - be familiar with contemporary music for the accordion in particular - be able to use the various performing techniques usable on the accordion - be capable of original artistic expression and have a command of large-scale musical forms - have the capability for independent improvement of his/her artistic skills and for undertaking further studies. Repertoire must be rehearsed to a sufficient and diverse extent. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire (about 30 min) to an examination board appointed by the university every academic year II Level A master s recital: The programme performed at the level performance examination must be a sufficiently demanding recital programme. In unclear cases, it is recommended that the student discuss the programme with the coordinating teacher well in advance. The programme must have a duration of between 60 and 90 min and must include the following: 1. Baroque music and/or other transcribed works 2. Contemporary music 3. Demanding chamber music or a concerto or similar work (chamber music may account for no more than half of the duration of the programme) 4. A freely chosen set of miniatures focusing on a specific style or composer II Examination board assessment, Classical music performance, instrument: All other studies included in the student s individual study plan. S-t3a2-5154 Kantele performance A2 Project and concise art music programme (Master of Music) A student who has completed the module is expected to: - have the capability for independent artistic work - have the capability to complete the level A examination included in the Master of Music degree - have a command of instrument technique to a standard required for the repertoire - have a command of the principal styles of music for the instrument - have agreed on annual goals with his/her teacher - have the capability to pursue further studies. The unit includes performing each academic year. Basic repertoire must be rehearsed to a sufficient and diverse extent, drawing on repertoire list 1. It is recommended to include 5 6 works from category 1 and 3 4 works each from categories 2 to 4 (at least one work from each). The student may select one of various approaches for this artistic project, such as chamber music, early music, folk music, jazz or popular music, or a collaboration with a student from another branch of the arts (e.g. Theatre Academy; School of Arts, Design and Architecture; Academy of Fine Arts). The student must write a thoroughly motivated project plan for approval by the coordinating teacher or subject collegium and by the head of the department. The project must include supporting elective studies. Folk music and jazz/popular music approaches and inter-art projects may include composing, arranging and/or improvisation. The chamber music approach requires participation in 1 or 2 chamber music periods or a masterclass. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year 10

II Level A2 master s recital: a) a programme lasting 30 to 40 min based on repertoire list 1 b) project performance lasting 40 to 45 min The student may complete parts a) and b) of the recital on different days if there is a weighty reason for needing to do so. Examination board assessment, For the project part, an examination board with expertise in the genre of music in question will be appointed. For students whose main subject is a classical music instrument: All other studies included in the student s individual study plan. For students with other main subjects: Kantele performance B or equivalent at the Sibelius Academy. Credited substituting studies There are no substitutions for this unit. Guitar S-t3b-5151 Guitar performance B A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of the principal styles of music for the guitar and the instrument technique and artistic interpretative capability required for them - have a command of musical forms and of sound production and touch on the guitar - have the capability to progress to Guitar performance A. Rehearsing repertoire from repertoire list 2, at least three times the amount required for the performance examination. I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year The annual performance must have a duration of 20 to 30 min. Also, during this unit the student must plan and execute one public performance with a duration of about 45 min that is an original programme conceived by himself/herself. The annual performance is not required in the academic year in which this performance is executed. II Level B bachelor s recital: a e) 5 works from categories 1 to 6, from at least four categories f) 1 work from category 7 The repertoire must be performed from memory; an exception may be made in the case of the contemporary work on a case-by-case basis. In special cases, other repertoire may be played from the score if so agreed with the coordinating teacher. The duration of the programme must be no less than 40 min and no more than 60 min. The repertoire performed at the level performance examination must be sufficiently demanding and diverse as a whole. In unclear cases, it is recommended that the student discuss the programme with the coordinating teacher well in advance. II Examination board assessment on a scale of 0 to 5 11

S-t3a1-5151 Guitar performance A1 A student who completes this unit is expected to: - have a command of the instrument technique required for demanding concert repertoire - be familiar with a range of core repertoire sufficient for independent artistic work - be widely conversant with various musical styles and how they are interpreted - be familiar with contemporary guitar music - be capable of original artistic expression and have a command of large-scale musical forms - have the capability for independent improvement of his/her artistic skills and for undertaking further studies. Rehearsing repertoire in repertoire list 1 at least as follows, including the works in the performance examination: (however, only one concerto need be rehearsed) a) 9 works from categories 1 to 6, representing different stylistic periods b) 3 works from category 7 c) 1 work from category 8 I Rehearsing and performing repertoire every academic year The annual performance must have a duration of about 30 min. Also, during this unit the student must plan and execute one public performance with a duration of about 60 min that is an original programme conceived by himself/herself. The annual performance is not required in the academic year in which this performance is executed. II Level A1 master s recital: a c) 3 works from categories 1 to 6, representing different stylistic periods d) 1 work from category 7 e) 1 work from category 8 Any of the above works may be replaced with a chamber music work if so agreed with the coordinating teacher or the chairman / deputy chairman of the examination board. The programme performed at the level performance examination must be a sufficiently demanding recital programme. In unclear cases, it is recommended that the student discuss the programme with the coordinating teacher well in advance. The recital must comprise at least 60 min of music. The programme must be played from memory except for the contemporary work and, on a case-by-case basis, the eventual chamber music work. In special cases, other repertoire may be played from the score if so agreed with the coordinating teacher. II Examination board assessment, For students whose main subject is the Guitar: All other studies included in the student s individual study plan. For students with other main subjects: Guitar performance B or equivalent at the Sibelius Academy. These performances must always be attended by a woodwind instrument teacher from the Sibelius Academy (other than the student s own teacher) or a member of the woodwind level performance examination board, who will give a brief written feedback. The student must compile the portfolio independently, as agreed with his/her own instrument teacher beginning in his/her first year of study. The portfolio must always include a record of the time and place of performance, the work performed and the other performers. The feedback received must also be entered in the portfolio. The portfolio must be created using a pre-defined template in electronic form. The portfolio must include at least ten works from various stylistic periods, including contemporary music.
