Program Notes When irst seaking with the TSO about the ossibility o writing a major work incororating text o Shakeseare, I was immediately drawn to the idea o exclusively using soliloquies by strong emale characters. In early March this year I lew over to Melbourne rom the US, and I met the wonderul Pamela Rabe or the very irst time. Very quickly I realized how much more research I needed to do in order to truly understand Shakeseare and his relationshi with the women in his lays. It wasn t enough to just have a vague imression o a handul o women rom the Renaissance, engaged in the social and olitical dramaa o their time. So, I let Melbournee with a list o books to read, and the determinationn to not only know more about the women who s monologues I d chosen to use in my iece, but also to conront mysel in them and how I really eel about eminism and gender imbalance today. While still re evaluating my ersective on eminism, I needed to continue working on this iece, right rom when I returned home to the US. So, I added two more monologues (Helena and Isabella), and decided to let my growing ercetions catch on the abric o this music like cleavers. Deciding on the title or this iece was very diicult or me my original title related to three o the women ( The Three Morrìgna ), but once I increased the igures in the room and my understanding o the situation these women are in, I needed to acknowledge their stature in a dierent way. As I oten do when comosing music, I look to hilosohy and biology or insiration, and one night I decidedd to google matriarchal societies in the animal kingdom. The usual susectss aeared in the results: Bees, Orcas, Ants, Meerkats, Lions, etc. However, the modern term hivemind (a collective consciousness, in whichh a grou o eole become aware o their commonality, and share thoughts, knowledge, and resources) was too temting and aroriate a word to reerence, esecially when connecting it to the long outstanding issue o gender imbalance. So, in a way, I am imlying in my title that these women are the clandestinee rulers and heroines o these lays, and because, even today, these works continue to inorm us who we are, these voices invariably strike a chord along the lines o imbalance in olitical leadershi, the gender ay ga, and many other such issues. A little word about the style and character o the music: I ve always enjoyed working with modes and symmetrical itch ormations, not to mention drawing insiration rom olk tunes and old, dare I say Ancient, ragments o music history. This iece is no excetion and I ully embrace my love o Renaissance music in it. As always it is my goal to let these connections irst become absorbed and controlled by my own voice. Ater this then, erhas, a amiliar neo something might escaee or a moment or two and hold your ear like an old acquaintance.
Monologues. Othello Act IV, sc. (line 85) EMILIA: But I do think it is their husbands' aults I wives do all: say that they slack their duties, And our our treasures into oreign las, Or else break out in eevish jealousies, Throwing restraint uon us; or say they strike us, Or scant our ormer having in desite; Why, we have galls, and though we have some grace, Yet have we some revenge. Let husbands know Their wives have sense like them: they see and smell And have their alates both or sweet and sour, As husbands have. What is it that they do When they change us or others? Is it sort? I think it is: and doth aection breed it? I think it doth: is't railty that thus errs? It is so too: and have not we aections, Desires or sort, and railty, as men have? Then let them use us well: else let them know, The ills we do, their ills instruct us so. Much Ado About Nothing (Act 4 Scene 1) BEATRICE: Kill Claudio! You killl me to deny it. Farewell. I am gone, though I am here: there is no love in you: nay, I ray you, let me go. In aith, I will go. You dare easier be riends with me than ight with my enemy. Is Claudio not aroved in the height a villain, that hath slandered, scorned, dishonoured my kinswoman? O that I were a man! What, bear her in hand until they come to take hands ; and then, with ublic accusation, uncovered slander, unmitigated rancour, O, God that I were a man! I would eat his heart in the market lace. Talk with a man out at window! A roer saying! Sweet Hero! She is wronged, she is slandered, she is undone. Princes and counties! Surely, a rincely testimony, a goodly count, Count Comect; a sweet gallant surely! O that I were a man or his sake! Or that I had any riend would be a man or my sake! But manhood is melted into courtesies, valour into comliment, and men are only turned into tongue, and trim ones too : he is now as valiant as Hercules that only tells a lie and swears it. I cannot be a man with wishing, thereore I will die a woman with grieving. All's Well That Ends Well (Act 1, Scene 1, line 121) HELENA: Our remedies ot in ourselves do lie Whichh we ascribe to heaven: the ated sky Gives us ree scoe; only doth backward ull Our slow designs when we ourselves are dull. What ower is it whichh mounts my love so high; That makes me see, and cannot eed mine eye? The mightiest sace in ortune nature brings To join like likes, and kiss like native things. Imossible be strange attemts to those That weigh their ains in sense, and do suose What hath been cannot be: who ever strove To show her merit, that did miss her love? The king's disease, my roject may deceive me, But my intents are ix'd and will not leave me. Measure or Measuree (Act 2, Scene 2, line 17) ISABELLA: Could great men thunder As Jove himsel does, Jove would ne'er be quiet, For every elting, etty oicer Would use his heaven or thunder; Nothing but thunder! Merciul Heaven, Thou rather with thy shar and sulhurous bolt Slit'st the unwedgeable and gnarled oak Than the sot myrtle: but man, roud man, Drest in a little brie authority, Most ignorant o what he's most assured, His glassy essence, like an angry ae, Plays such antastic tricks beore high heaven As make the angels wee; who, with our sleens, Would all themselvess laugh mortal. The Eilogue, As You Like It, Act 5, Scene 4 ROSALIND. It is not the ashion to seee the lady the eilogue; but it is no more unhandsome than to see the lord the rologue. I it be true that good wine needs no bush, 'tis true thatt a good layy needs no eilogue. Yet to good wine they do use good bushes; and good lays rove the better by the hel o good eilogues. What a case am I in, then, that am neither a good eilogue nor cannot insinuate with you in the behal o a good lay! I am not urnished like a beggar; thereore to beg will not become me: my way is to conjure you; and I'll begin with the women. I charge you, O women, or the love you bear to men, to like as much o this lay as lease you: and I charge you, O men, or the love you bear to women; as I erceive by your simering, none o you hates them, that between you and the women the lay may lease. I I were a woman, I would kiss as many o you as had beards that leased me, comlexions thatt liked me, and breaths that I deied not; and, I am sure, as many as have good beards, or good aces, or sweet breaths, will, or my kind oer, when I make curtsy, bid me arewell.
