About the Comosition It s a dear old land o lerechauns wondrous wishing wells; Nowhere else on God s green earth, there be such lakes dells. No wonder that the angels love that shamrock covered shore; It draws my heart toward home again I love it more more. O, Ireland! O, Ireland! We re never ar aart; or you all your beauty ill my mind touch my heart. It was this text that insired me to comose Celtic Dreams, commissioned or the reeort unior High School s International Day celebration. The work is steeing in Irish sounds, rom enny whistles (iccolo) to bagies (trombones), and couled with Irish ercussion motives. inally, the harmonic sequences give the work a sense o mystery and awe in a Gaelic style reminiscent o Old Ireland. About the Comoser An artist o widely diverse musical talents, Mike orbes has set orth on a career encomassing all asects o erorming, comosing, teaching and conducting. He began his writing career creating hundreds o arrangements and comositions esecially or brass, many o which are erormed by today s oremost brass ensembles. His works or the Sotto Voce Quartet (a grou he co-ound and manages) have also gained him worldwide acclaim. He began to comose or other genres, as dozens o commissions rom big-name brass artists to university and high school band directors began to come in. He now considers himsel extremely lucky to be a ull-time comoser and arranger writing esecially or Carl ischer Music. orbes began his career as a tubist in the.s. Army Band, Pershing s Own, where he was also very ortunate to comose and arrange or the various ensembles in that restigious unit. He let the band or a career in academia where he has served on the aculties o Illinois State niversity, Mary Washington niversity, Columbia nion College, and rederick Community College. He continues to be an active reelance erormer and has erormed with a host o orchestras and bands throughout the nited States. He can be heard on Summit Records on a number o Sotto Voce Quartet albums but also on his own solo recording, orbes Plays Koetsier, where he eatures all seven works or solo tuba by Dutch comoser an Koetsier. As a conductor, orbes served as the musical director o the Brass Band o Central Illinois and has guest conducted numerous elements o the.s. Army Band. He is highly in demand as a guest conductor with unior and senior high honor bands and youth brass bands. YPS6
