THE NATIONAL PROJECT GROWING UP WITH A BOOK The national project for reading promotion among young people Growing up with a book is carried out by the Slovenian Book Agency in cooperation with general public libraries, Slovenian primary and secondary schools, primary schools with an adapted programme, educational establishments for children and young people with special needs and primary and secondary bilingual schools in neighbouring countries. In addition, the Agency has for a number of years cooperated with the Basketball Federation of Slovenia to promote sports and books and in this way motivate young people to read. The aims of the project Growing up with a book are: to promote acclaimed Slovenian authors of young adult literature, to motivate students to read and visit general public libraries, to encourage publishers to include more contemporary Slovenian authors in their publishing programmes for young adults. In the school year 2014/2015 the project Growing up with a book is organised for the ninth time for seventh-grade primary school students and for the fifth time for first-year secondary school students. Every year the relevant expert committee of the Slovenian Book Agency selects, on the basis of a public tender, two works of young adult literature written by Slovenian authors. The selected books are intended for seventh-grade primary school and first-year secondary school students, who receive the books on their yearly visit to the nearest general public library, which is a part of the curriculum. During the visit students learn about library and information science, the latest in Slovenian young adult literature and the selected book and its author. Together with the selected publishers and authors the Agency prepares promotional material and film presentations (www.jakrs.si// bralna-kultura/rastem-s-knjigo/videovsebine). Students meet the authors of the selected books on several occasions (on school visits organised by the Slovenian Reading Badge Society Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth and the Slovene Writers Association). Slovenian-speaking students attending bilingual schools in neighbouring countries (Austria, Hungary, Italy) also receive the books. The Agency cooperates with teachers of Slovenian at so-called Saturday schools (America, Australia), at supplementary Slovenian classes abroad (Belgium, BiH, Serbia, Croatia, France, etc.) and at European schools (Brussels, Luxemburg, Frankfurt, etc.). The project Growing up with a book is a joint effort of the Slovenian Book Agency and a working group of representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, Pionirska Centre for Youth Literature and Librarianship at the Ljubljana City Library, the National Education Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, the Slovenian Public Libraries Association, the School libraries section at the Slovenian Library Association, the Society of School Librarians and the Slovene Writers Association. 2 3
