Anne Lough is an internationally known traditional musician who performs and teaches at schools, workshops, and festivals throughout the country. She is highly acclaimed in the dulcimer world for her artistic and sensitive style of playing, as well as her skill as an instructor. In addition to many recordings, Anne has published over 10 books of dulcimer arrangements, including "Old-time Hymns & Gospel Favorites for Mountain Dulcimer," through Mel Bay. Jody Marshall, a clear and insightful teacher, is known for her easy to understand and enjoyable style of instruction. Her lively and dynamic playing is featured on Maggie's Music recording, "Cottage in the Glen." She is also the author of the book of holiday arrangements, Carol of the Bells: Seasonal Favorites for Hammered Dulcimer and Other Instruments and two holiday CDs. Jody was a founding member of the DC-based bands, Ironweed and Moon- Fire, and currently performs both solo and with a variety of musicians in the DC area and nationwide. Randy Marchany plays with the award-winning Virginia based group No Strings Attached. No Strings Attached. The band has numerous recordings and plays mostly original music that starts with a traditional base but draw from jazz and swing. Randy is an energetic and creative hammered dulcimer and keyboard player, an engaging teacher and performer, and composes much of the music performed by NSA. Steve Schneider, a versatile player who performs a wide ranging repertoire with great finesse, has played on sound tracks for movies, television, documentaries, and Broadway. He has a masters degree in music therapy, directs an intensive hammered dulcimer retreat in Ontario and uses the hammered dulcimer in a variety of theraputic settings. He has several recordings, including "Momentum" with Paul Oorts. Paul Oorts a native of Belgium, is adept at musette accordion and many things with strings. His instrumental versatility and knowledge of many different styles of music have made Paul the accompanist of choice for many hammered dulcimer players and a valued member of several dance ensembles. He plays English and contra dance music with Goldcrest and Cabaret Sauvignon, traditional French music with Ensemble Tympanon, the hammered dulcimer ensemble Carilon, and Italian mandolin music with the Rigatoni Brothers.

lydia ievins plays 5-string fiddle and nyckelharpa for Scandinavian and English Country dancing. Her absolute favorite thing about playing in either genre is the boundless opportunity to create rich harmonic lines. She has been awarded a bronze Zorn medal in Sweden for her playing in the Uppland tradition. Andrea Larson has performed Swedish traditional music for the past 20 years and has been teaching fiddle/violin from her private studio for the past 15. She enjoys exploring new ways to share her treasure trove of new teaching ideas from some of Sweden's best fiddle teachers. She is very enthusiastic about her newly developed workshop series on practicing, which she has now discovered to be fun after all! Andrea and lydia have been playing Swedish-style fiddle together for the past decade, and spent an intense 2012-13 academic year studying in the center of the nyckelharpa universe, at the Eric Sahlström Institute. Much of their shared repertoire comes from central regions of Sweden, with a smattering of Norwegian and Danish and beyond. They are excited about their latest grand projects: bringing the younger hipper living slängpolska tradition to the US, and creating a new intensive weekend course for dance musicians. Friday Afternoon Workshop Map of Your Dulcimer with Steve Schneider Finding Your Way Around, Grasping Patterns, and Unlocking Secrets of the Instrument The more you understand how the hammered dulcimer is organized the easier it is to learn, to play, and to get comfortable. In this workshop we'll explore and discover helpful ways to get around on the instrument while developing facility. Toward that end, we'll use some interesting repertoire and exercises that will speed us on our way toward greater fluency and ultimate happiness as hammered dulcimer players and musicians. Tunes for Two with Anne Lough Explore the beautiful and enjoyable realm of creating and playing in perfect harmony. Saturday and Sunday Workshops Träd: Cultivating Scandinavian Rhythm and Roots for Dance Musicians with lydia ievans and Andrea Larson The Träd class is an intensive weekend workshop for instrumental musicians on melody instruments, largely though not exclusively slanted toward fiddle and nyckelharpa. Students will work on Swedish tune repertoire, learn about engaging your core rhythm, explore how dance and movement inform your role as a musician, and practice the skills of playing irresistibly inspiring music for dancing. The teaching level is best suited to intermediate and advanced players who are comfortable learning tunes by ear. Music From Momentum with with Paul Oorts From classical pieces, jazz, quirky international numbers, to the music of the Beatles; this class will choose some of the repertoire from Paul and Steve s recording Momentum and work on arranging skills with the students enrolled. Open to all instruments.

Weekend Hammered Dulcimer Classes Building Skills for the New Player with Anne Lough Starting with the bare basics of tuning and learning the layout of the instrument better, this class will build playing skills and confidence in new players and those needing a gentle approach with lovely tunes from the Celtic and Appalachian Repertoire. Beg. Refining your Skills with Jody Marshall Refine your solo playing and as well as expand your ability to accompany others. In this workshop you ll develop skills for embellishing your melodies, including some special effects that are guaranteed to spice up your playing. Learn some specific tips and tricks for backing up jigs, reels, and waltzes. Adv. Beg. Tunes from No Strings Attached with Randy Marchany Learn some of the songs from the No Strings Attached repertoire. This all-around workshop will review basic skills and techniques and use song as examples of how these skills are used in an arrangement. Songs from the No Strings Attached song list include original, Celtic, swing, ethnic tunes. Int.-Adv. Doing More with Less with Steve Schneider The hammered dulcimer is a magical instrument, but it's really easy to destroy much of its magic and meaning by doing too much (or too little) and obscuring what you're trying to say. In this workshop we'll explore ways to play with intention that give you the means to make effective choices whether you're playing a simple melody, playing intricate and sophisticated music, improvising, or creating complex and compelling arrangements. Note: Please be prepared to play something of your choice. Also, ability to read music would be useful. Int.-Adv. Saturday Evening Open Mike Students and faculty are invited to share their latest work in an informal concert on Saturday evening. Followed by jam sessions in a variety of levels and styles.
