ROGRAM NOTES On the morning o Aril 9th, 995, in the single most violent act o domestic terrorism in the history o the nited States, a bomlast ried through the Alred. Murrah ederal Building in donton Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The exlosion claimed 68 lives, including 9 children ho attended the day care center on the building s irst loor. Across the street rom the Murrah Building, an American Elm tree as severely damaged by the blast, but someho managed to survive. No knon as The Survivor Tree, the elm has become an iconic symbol: one o aith, hoe, and erseverance in the ace o tremendous adversity. This iece, Silent Stands the Elm, is insired by the symbolism and message o The Survivor Tree, and is dedicated to the victims and survivors o Aril 9th, 995. Secial note: The Alred. Murrah National Monument is ramed by to large stone gates. Symbolically deicting the exact moment o destruction (9:0 a.m.), the East Gate bears the inscrition 9:0 a.m., hile the West Gate s inscrition reads 9:0 a.m. These Gates o Time are reresented in the chime art. Measures through 5 contain 0 chime notes (9 + ), symbolizing 9:0. At the end o the iece, measures 5 through 55 contain chime notes (9 + ), deicting 9:0. NOTES TO THE CONDCTOR In measures through, the temo should be extremely lexible. Take your time, don t rush, and strive or a very exressive, rubato eeling. Additionally, there are several subtle temo luctuations throughout the iece ush orard slightly at measures and, ritard at measures 6 and 8, etc. These hel give the iece a sense o motion and luidity, and should be observed. At measure, the mallet ercussion art should be layed on iano i at all ossible. In the assage beginning at measure, layers should ay very close attention to dynamic levels, being careul to not enter too loudly. Also, or best eect, layers should not take a breath during measures 7 and 8. inally, the ensemble should ork very careully to control and suort the assage, hich begins at measure. layers should not breathe at the end o measure 9, should sustain and suort measures 0 through 5, and should observe all dynamic luctuations.
