e Newark School District, in conjunction with the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce, have teamed up again this year to bring the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra here to perform at Newark High School December 5th at 7:30 p.m. Newark High School is both proud and privileged to host the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for the fourteenth consecutive year. ese holiday concerts here are a wonderful annual holiday tradition in our community that so many look forward to, said Dave Schwind, Newark school district music supervisor and NHS instrumental music teacher. e Newark Central School District would again like to thank the many sponsors who have enabled us to present this performance at a very affordable price, Schwind said. Jim Tiller, principal percussion and assistant principal timpanist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra since 1995 will conduct the RPO. He joined the music faculty at SUNY Geneseo in 1996, where he directs all percussion studies and is conductor of the Geneseo Percussion Ensemble. He has also served as conductor of the Geneseo Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Tiller is director of the Percussion Ensembles Program at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance. He received his formal music education at the University of South Carolina and the Eastman School of Music. He earned the Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance and Literature, and the prestigious Performer s Certificate from Eastman in 1990, where he was a percussion student of John H. Beck and conducting student of David Effron. He completed the Bachelor of Music Education degree and Performer s Certificate from the University of South Carolina in 1988, where he was a percussion student of James Hall. Active in virtually all musical genres, Tiller has performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia. As a soloist and chamber musician he has performed for professional conventions and festivals, including those of the Percussive Arts Society, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Spoleto Festival, American Harp Society Conference, International Viola Congress, and International Double Reed Society, among others. He has been featured on WXXI s Live from Hochstein, Eastman s Faculty Artist Series, Society for Chamber Music in Rochester, Friends of Music, and Fortissimo! Tiller has recorded for harmonia mundi usa, Sony Music, NAXOS, ADMLive, Capstone, and other labels. He has also performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, South Carolina Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, and Binghamton Symphony, among others. Jim Tiller
Harold McAulliffe Retired Pittsford school district music teacher and tenor Harold McAulliffe, who has previously been a guest soloist with the RPO when it has appeared in Newark will a be a soloist, McAulliffe s commitment to excellence has permeated every moment of his 48- year career as a professional educator, performer, and conductor. His choral expertise is requested each holiday season when he trains the Festival High School Chorale for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra s annual Gala Holiday Pops concerts. Equally successful as a tenor soloist, McAulliffe has appeared with major symphonies and choral societies around the United States and Europe, and appeared in a series of concerts across America promoting the Summer Olympics in Barcelona. roughout his career, McAulliffe has been a leader in the Rochester music community, promoting the arts on a variety of corporate and county boards. He has served, or is serving, on the boards of Young Audiences of Rochester, the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Rotary Club of Pittsford, the Pittsford District Retired Teacher s Association, and KEEP, the Pittsford Central Schools Foundation. McAulliffe is a past recipient of the RPO Musicians Award for Outstanding Music Educators (Vocal Music Educator of the year). He has served for over 44 years as Musical Director for Pittsford Musicals, Inc., a community theater organization of which he was a co-founder and that has given over a quarter million dollars in scholarships to local students pursuing careers in the arts. is past spring he directed A Little Night Music, his 50 th show as Musical Director/Conductor for Pittsford Musicals In June, 2007, he retired from the Pittsford Central School District after 40 years of service, having served as teacher, District Instructional Leader for Music, and Director of the Pittsford Summer Enrichment Institute. McAulliffe now teaches at the University of Rochester as conductor of the Men s Glee Club. He continues to travel the country, adjudicating choral festivals and appearing as a guest soloist.
Herb Smith, who joined the RPO in 1991 and is third trumpet, will also be a soloist. Smith has held the position of ird Trumpet with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for more than 15 years. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and is now a trumpet instructor at Eastman s Community Education Department. In addition to playing with the RPO, Herb performs throughout the area with his jazz ensemble, e Freedom Trio, and performs as a vocalist with orchestras around the country. Herb is a frequent substitute with the Buffalo Philharmonic as well as the Chautauqua Symphony. In addition to his performance career, Herb has recently branched out into the field of composition and has written music for silent films, the Garth Fagan Dance Ensemble, and various brass ensembles. Ticket prices for the RPO concert will be $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students and are available at the Newark Wegmans customer service desk, Lyons National Bank, Community Bank, the Newark Chamber office and Doebler Realty office. As in other years, the school district will provide shuttle bus service, beginning at 6:30 p.m. from the Woodlane Community Church parking lot so people won t have to walk great distances to their cars. Pre-concert seating will be in the gym where entertainment will be provided, beginning at 6:40 p.m. by the NHS Jazz Ensemble. A pasta dinner, sponsored by the NHS Music Department and Newark Music Boosters, will be held in the Newark High School Cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m..
