THE MOST FREQUENTLY BORROWED SETS In order to carefully direct any funds available for purchasing new music and to aid selection of secondhand stock I recently sorted the issues data to come up with a list of the most frequently borrowed sets between April 2004 and October 2011. LATE 18 TH / EARLY 19 TH CENTURY KEYBOARD MUSIC Amongst the music within the collection there are three bound volumes of selections of Handel s keyboard music. On the inside cover of one of these is an inscription with the name William Mutlow. The organist of Gloucester Cathedral 1782 to 1832 was William Mutlow and so it is highly possible that the music in the Collections possession was owned by the same William Mutlow. I have informed Adrian Partingdon, the present organist at Gloucester Cathedral, as well as Christopher Jeens, archivist of Gloucester Cathedral Library. When we have a mutual contact making the journey between Bristol and Gloucester the volumes will be re-housed at the Cathedral, since their age and condition are not suitable to remain within this working collection. For anyone interested in knowing more about William Mutlow, he was by all reports quite a character. One published story relates that as a boy, already quite fat he once fell from the Triforium into the Choir, bouncing like a india-rubber ball, and was not in the least hurt but the author adds the truth of this story cannot be vouched for. His portrait hangs on the Songroom wall within Gloucester Cathedral. ADDITIONS TO STOCK FROM KENT PERFORMING ARTS LIBRARY In January we received 97 orchestral sets and 37 vocal sets from Kent Performing Arts Library. They are listed on the web page http://www.uwe.ac.uk/library/musiclib/catalogue.htm 4
As reported in the last Newsletter Kent Performing Arts Library moved to new premises and hadn t room for all of their music sets and so offered those that had not been borrowed in the last four years to other libraries. The orchestral sets we requested are shelved next to the Music awaiting collection shelf. They will be integrated into the collection as time allows. If you would like to borrow anything please give 4 weeks notice for the set(s) to be catalogued and processed. The 37 vocal sets we selected are on the table by the door as you enter the collection, so again please feel free to browse and they will similarly require 4 weeks notice before borrowing until added to stock.
