Information pack for the Organ Scholarship 2019-2020

History Southwell Minster is of Saxon origin and was founded as a collegiate church in the tenth century. In 1108 Archbishop Gerard put in process the rebuilding of this Anglo-Saxon church and Southwell Minster was created. The church was elevated to cathedral status with the creation of the Diocese of Southwell in 1884 and is now the Cathedral of Nottinghamshire. The Cathedral stands adjacent to the ruined Archbishop of York s palace, which had a major renovation in 2013, courtesy of a 1.5 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The State Chamber of the original palace has remained wonderfully preserved, and acts as a concert venue for the Cathedral. The music department below has undergone a complete renovation, including an addition of two new rehearsal rooms, an Organ Scholar flat and a new music library. A choir of boys and men has existed at Southwell for over 900 years. Choristers have always been drawn from the Minster School now a voluntary aided Church of England school complete with a junior school for the education of the younger boys and other musically-gifted children; and which is part of the Choir Schools Association. A Girls Choir was added in 2005 to enhance the worship at the Cathedral. In 2013, the Cathedral received a major boost with a 20,000 donation to the music programme from the Friends of Cathedral Music. 2

Locality Originally a Roman settlement, Southwell is a historic town with some 7,500 residents and lies on the River Greet. The town boasts a number of impressive buildings, including multiple Georgian prebendal houses, an old workhouse (now owned by the National Trust), a racecourse, independent shops and restaurants, and many old taverns. Notable events include the Southwell Music Festival and the Gate to Southwell Folk Festival. There are good transport links by bus to Newark (20 minutes) and Nottingham (40 minutes). Regular trains from Newark to London take 1 hour 20 minutes. The Choirs Southwell Minster has a choral tradition stretching back over 900 years and currently comprises Boy Choristers, Girl Choristers, Lay Clerks six daily singers and six Auxiliary Lay Clerks, and the Minster Chorale. Between them, the Boy and Girl Choristers rehearse and sing services on six days of the week, including Evensong on their own on Monday and Tuesday. The Lay Clerks sing with the Choristers from Thursday until Sunday, and for Feast Days and Holy Days at other times. The Cathedral Choir s repertoire is large and aims to include the best of all eras, from large-scale anthems of Byrd and Palestrina through to Gabriel Jackson and MacMillan with much in between. They regularly broadcast and record, and foreign tours are undertaken frequently. The Rector Chori is responsible for the Boy Choristers, and the Assistant Director of Music is responsible for the Girl Choristers the Organ Scholar plays for services as required, for any combination of Choristers and Lay Clerks, and for the Minster Chorale. The Minster Chorale, the Cathedral s voluntary choir, is also run by the Assistant Director of Music, and sings at 3

Cathedral liturgies as necessary, complementing the Cathedral Choir s duties. All the members of the music foundation form a singularly warm and welcoming group; an incoming Organ Scholar would be assured of becoming a member of a happy and sociable team of distinction. Duties of the Post Southwell Minster is offering an Organ Scholarship to a player of suitable achievement and potential to start in September 2019. The award is aimed either at a gap year candidate (filling a year between school and university) or at a university/college leaver wishing to embark on a cathedral career and needing more experience, in which case the scholarship may be tenable for a second year. Experience of accompanying Anglican repertoire and working with both adult singers and young choristers is expected. The Organ Scholar s duties include: accompanying the Cathedral Choir as directed, normally at a minimum of one service each week. The amount of accompaniment expected depends on the incumbent s skill and experience, and will build as the months go by. normally accompanying (and sometimes conducting) the Minster Chorale on occasion to conduct the Cathedral Choir, as directed. helping supervise the Choristers after-school club and tea. helping train the junior choristers and also being involved in working with the senior choristers from time to time. assisting with the administrative side of the Music Department. being the principal librarian - the task of daily getting out and putting away music from the Choir Library falls to the Organ Scholar, as does binding and labelling new copies. There is a fully equipped office in the Choir Library, usefully adjacent to the Organ Scholar s flat. 4

The Organ Scholar will be invited to run the West Trent Churches Choir, a group comprising singers from local churches, singing at a number of events in the West Trent Deanery. Remuneration of a modest level is given for this duty, which normally comprises bi-weekly rehearsals and a small number of services during term time. The standard of playing for which we are looking would be no less than ABRSM Grade 8 merit/distinction, with a view possibly to studying for an external diploma such as ARCO during the year. Good sight-reading and extemporisation are vital. A broad musical outlook will be hoped for, including an active and informed interest in the Cathedral choral repertoire. There is also the opportunity of further employment in the Cathedral s outreach project, working with children in primary schools on many Wednesdays across Nottinghamshire, following the success of the government s Sing Up scheme. 5

The Instruments Southwell Minster is blessed to have five organs on campus. In the Song School a two-manual pipe organ by Grant, Degens & Bradbeer (refurbished 2014) is available as a practice instrument. A chamber organ by the same company is located in the Cathedral, along with another (digital) box organ. The Cathedral also boasts two fine cathedral organs, one for the Quire and one speaking into the Nave. The 1995 Nicholson Screen Organ is the principal instrument, as is used for all services in the Quire. It comprises four manuals with 51 speaking stops, and is remarkably flexible as both an accompanimental and recital instrument. In 1990, Wood of Huddersfield relocated a robust three-manual J.J. Binns organ from Yorkshire into the Nave triforium to accompany Nave services. It is well-designed for leading large congregations and as a second recital instrument. It is playable both from the screen and from a mobile console on the Cathedral floor. Remuneration A bursary is paid at the start of each term, totalling 8,900 for the year. The Roger Radford Bursary provides an extra 600 per annum for the Organ Scholar to spend on music, books, recordings or external organ lessons. Fees for weddings, funerals etc. are paid separately. Three days a week, afternoon tea and sandwiches are provided in return for supervising Chorister Club. The Cathedral Refectory also offers food and drink to the staff at a discount. The Cathedral s organs will normally be available, free of charge and by arrangement with the Cathedral diary, for the Organ Scholar s lessons and practice. Organ lessons with the Rector Chori and/or Assistant Director of Music are offered free of charge. Occasional lessons may of course be taken with another teacher of the scholar s choice. Oxbridge and/or RCO exams can be prepared for. Cathedral duties may be supplemented by some teaching. Occasional other opportunities for paid work arise in the locality. 7

Accommodation The Organ Scholar is provided (rent and Council Tax free) with a self-contained newly fittedout flat in the Archbishop s Palace adjacent to the Cathedral (bedroom, shower-room and living room with fully equipped kitchen). The accommodation forms part of the remuneration package, as it does for all Cathedral musicians. Dignity at Work Southwell Minster is committed to creating a harmonious working environment, which is free from harassment and bullying and in which everyone is treated with respect and dignity. It is committed to ensuring that individuals do not feel apprehensive because of their religious belief (including theology or church tradition), political opinion, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, race, age, or disability, or through any inappropriate behaviour towards them. Safeguarding Southwell Minster is committed to: safeguarding, caring for and nurturing children and young people in the Minster and community. safeguarding and caring for vulnerable adults in the Minster and community. informing those involved with children and vulnerable adults in our church of the behaviour expected of them. explaining the procedure for background checks of those involved with children and vulnerable adults in the Minster protecting adult members of the church from malicious or false accusations of abuse. 8

The History of the Scholarship The Award was once a Sixth Form Scholarship, held in conjunction with the Minster School. The first holder, Charles Harrison, obtained his ARCM here, went to Jesus College Cambridge as Organ Scholar, won Second Prize in the St Albans International Organ Competition and is now cathedral organist at Chichester. His successor, Matthew Halls, obtained his ARCM and ARCO here, winning Organ Scholarships to Salisbury Cathedral and New College, Oxford, where he gained a First and then read for a D.Phil. before moving to Amsterdam to work as Ton Koopman s continuo player and later taking over direction of the King s Consort. A recent recording by Matthew of the complete Handel Organ Concertos won high praise in Gramophone and he now has a busy international conducting schedule and is widely renowned for recordings such as the Goldberg Variations. Following him was David Soar, who went on to study organ and singing at the RAM and is now a Principal (bass) with Welsh National Opera. Next was David Gostick who went as Organ Scholar to Pembroke College Oxford, having won his ARCO and ARCM; he is now Director of Music at Wimborne Minster. The next holder, Thomas Wiggall, went to Cambridge as Organ Scholar of Emmanuel College; he is now making his way as a composer and has recently won acclaim in the press with a full-length opera. The 1998-99 holder, Anthony Smith, became Organ Scholar of Jesus College, Cambridge, having won most of the prizes at ARCO (including the Limpus); now a Ph.D he is an academic at the University of York. His successor, Matthew O Donovan, went up to Oxford in October 2000 as Organ Scholar of Merton College, where he won high praise for his choral recordings; he is now Director of Academic Music and of Lower Chapel Music at Eton College as well as making award-winning recordings with his early-music choir Stile Antico. Christopher Bucknall (2000-01) became Organ Scholar of Lincoln College, Oxford and is now making a name for himself on various CDs and as a sought-after continuo player. Oliver Lallemant (2002-03) won the Organ Scholarship to Trinity College Cambridge. He is now assistant organist at Holy Trinity Sloane Square, London and creating a real stir with his concerts of piano jazz improvisation. After him came American graduate, Charlie Sega, who won an excellent post in Chicago whilst here, followed by Stephen Moore, who won Organ Scholarships at Salisbury Cathedral and at Trinity College, London, and is now Director of Music at St Matthew s Northampton. Next was ex-pembroke Cambridge Organ Scholar Dr Emma Gibbins, who passed the ARCO and completed her doctorate here. She became Director of Music at St George s Church Belfast, with its famous choral tradition, and is now Cathedral Organist at Newport, Wales. The 2005-06 Organ Scholar was Simon Earl who left to become Organ Scholar to Newcastle Cathedral & University. He later became Assistant Organist of Wakefield cathedral and is now Director of Music at Christchurch Priory. Daniel Battle joined us in 2006 on graduating from Bangor University & Cathedral, where he was Organ Scholar. Daniel is now making a career in Cork. The 2007-08 Organ Scholar, Richard Moore, won the Organ Scholarship to St John s College Oxford whilst at Southwell and is now working in London after a period as Organ Scholar of St Paul s Cathedral. His successor, Peter Holder (an ABRSM Silver Medal winner at grade 8 organ) was awarded scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music and to the Royal Hospital Chapel, Chelsea, winning four prizes at ARCO including the Limpus; he is now Assistant Organist at St Paul s Cathedral and winning a high reputation for his playing. The 2009-11 scholar was Jonathan Turner, who came to us after being Organ Scholar of Lincoln College Oxford and of Blackburn Cathedral, and is now Head of Keyboard Studies at Dulwich College 9

Preparatory School. The 2011-13 Scholar, Hilary Punnett, is a Canadian graduate with a Master s from McGill University; she is now Assistant Organist at Lincoln Cathedral. Her successor, David Quinn, who came to Southwell having been Organ Scholar of St Peter s College, Oxford, is now Assistant Organist of Radley College. Edward Turner, organ scholar 2015-17 and acting Assistant Director of Music during that time, is now Assistant Director of Music at Derby Cathedral, and currently acting up as Director of Music. The current Cathedral Organists are Paul Provost (Rector Chori & Organist) and Simon Hogan (Assistant Director of Music). Paul studied at St John s College, Cambridge, and has subsequently held posts at Winchester College and Guildford Cathedral; he took up the post of Rector Chori in April 2017. Simon studied at the Royal College of Music, and has held posts at the Cathedrals of Salisbury, Bristol and St Paul's before taking up the Assistant Director of Music job in Southwell. 10
