What you are about to see tonight is a culmination of some extremely hard work in bringing together the best song and dance routines from the West End and Broadway from both present day and over the past six decades. It will hopefully make you leave the theatre singing all those memorable songs written by some fabulous composers and expertly arranged by our Musical Directors. You will see some wonderful dancing choreographed by our three Choreographers and all brought together by our Director. You will notice as you go through this programme that we are entering a time of change for the Company in that we have decided to change our name from Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society to Cody Musical Theatre Company. The next couple of shows are Crazy for You and A Chorus Line which requires a lot of dancing for men which are always in short supply in all Companies. CODY MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY - Formerly known as Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society (CFAOS) BIOGRAPHIES - PRODUCTION TEAM Charlotte Walker (Director) Charlotte has been a member of Cody Musical Theatre Company formerly Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society since the tender age of thirteen when she joined the cast of Rose Marie as a dancer in 1979. Since then she has been involved in numerous productions both as a dancer and as a principal, taking on roles such as Roxie Hart in Chicago Mrs Malloy in Hello Dolly and Katie Brown in Calamity Jane In later years, Charlotte has favoured the production side, taking on the role of Assistant Director for shows including The King and I, Taking the Mick-a-doo, The Full Monty, The Pirates of Penzance and The Sound of Music, before taking on the role of Director for The Wizard of Oz. Don t Stop the Music a departure from our traditional type of show, is Charlotte s second show as Director for the company and what a journey it has been, from concept through to production. The show has been an incredible challenge for all those involved but has provided us with the opportunity to perform some of our favourite musical theatre numbers of all time. Charlotte hopes that the programme includes some of your favourites too. None of this would have been possible without a dedicated production team who have worked tirelessly on this project. Charlotte would like to take this opportunity to thank them all. Following her commitment to Don t Stop the Music, Charlotte will return to her day job, which is running her own executive search consultancy business. Graham Hix (Joint Musical Director) Graham s inkling towards music started when his parents found him pretending to play the piano on the table in front of the radio set, aged six. Piano lessons quickly followed which finally led to a career in sound engineering at the BBC & London Weekend TV / ITV Piano playing was almost dormant for 20 years during which time Graham built his career specialising in light entertainment music mixing, working with everyone from Bette Midler & Sammy Davis to Carl Davis & Leonard Bernstein - not forgetting the late Cilla Black, Bruce Forsyth and Dame Edna (Barry Humphries) for which he received a BAFTA nomination. In 1986 he rekindled the fingers and has now spent 30 years being Musical Director, arranger and keyboardist for many local music groups. Don t Stop The Music is his 7th show as MD for Cody and is a departure from the norm, requiring vocal and band arrangements to be written by Graham and Paul for nearly two hours of music. We hope you will sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labours! Paul Tickner (Joint Musical Director) This is Paul s 10th year as Musical Director for Cody but the first time he has shared the position with another MD, It has been a real pleasure working alongside of Graham. This show has been challenging, having to score and arrange everything from scratch and would probably not have been possible without two MDs sharing the duties. This has however given them a chance to perform some beautiful melodies. Paul gets goose bumps every time he conducts Graham s wonderful arrangement of Les Miserable. Paul has recently retired as a operating theatre nurse at Frimley Park Hospital, but as an MD with Cody, and the Aldershot Military Wives Choir, playing bass with two rock groups and an Elvis tribute act, renovating a narrow boat and writing another Musical, he doesn t know how he ever found time to go to work. Christine White (Assistant Director) Christine joined Cody in 1988 for Pajama Game as a dancer. Since then she has been involved in most shows either back-stage, Front of House or on stage in the dance team, occasionally punctuated with principal parts. This is her second time as Assistant Director having joined the Production Team for The Wizard of Oz for Charlotte s first show as Director. Having danced with Charlotte in many shows since 1988 she is delighted to be joining her again at the helm! This has certainly been a different sort of production to be involved in and getting the chance to put my dancing background to good use has been great fun. Many a summer afternoon has been spent with Charlotte dancing in her garden as they put together some of the big ensemble numbers! Christine is no stranger to the stage treading the boards for the first time with CAMUS in Carousel in 1971 as a child dancer. Other roles over the years have been Kate in Kiss Me Kate, Carrie in Carousel, Lena in Singin in the Rain and with other societies; Irene in Crazy for You, FAOS and with AODS in 2012 the chance to play Kate again!

DON T STOP THE MUSIC BIOGRAPHIES - PRODUCTION TEAM April Timpson (Joint Choreographer) April joined Cody in 2005 and has enjoyed being one of the dancers in several productions since then. She is the principal of Dance Focus Academy and has two children both also involved with Cody, one helping with lighting, the other performing. Having choreographed The Pirates of Penzance in 2011 and working with Joyce for the 2014 production of Sweet Charity, April is delighted to be choreographing various numbers in Don t Stop the Music. Huw Prall (Joint Choreographer) Huw s first show with the company was The Music Man in 1975 while still at school. Since this time he has appeared in a number of shows with us including Oliver!, Die Fledermaus, Jesus Christ Superstar (King Herod), Chicago (Mary Sunshine). In his capacity as a choreographer for the society he has been responsible for productions of Camelot, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma!, Carousel, Crazy For You, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Professional choreographic assignments include Pygmalion (Theatre Royal Windsor & Albery Theatre London), Mansfield Park, The Secret of Beatrix Potter and East Lynne (Redgrave Theatre Farnham). Professional performing engagements include Pride and Prejudice (BBC) Rebecca (Carlton) Byron (BBC) and La Traviata (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden). A specialist in Historical Dance, Huw teaches at a number of London Drama Schools and is Head of Dance for the Education Department at Shakespeare s Globe in London. He is delighted to have been involved in this production and to return to the society who have given him so many great opportunities to develop as both a performer and choreographer over so many years! Lisa Fletcher (Joint Choreographer) With both parents in the professional theatre business, it is no surprise that Lisa took to the stage at an early age. Growing up in Glasgow, she studied ballet and sang in the school and church choirs. At 16 she joined her first musical society and has had a passion for musical theatre ever since. Lisa spent many years moving around with the armed services where she took part in various stage productions ranging from drama to panto. She has been with CODY for 17 years, both dancing and playing principal roles. In this show, Lisa is taking mostly a dancing role and having a go at choreographing on a scale that is new to her. Daunting! It s been hard work, fun and rewarding. Mike Davall (Stage Manager) Mike is looking forward to Don t Stop The Music as it means that there is not much to do during the show, which makes a serious change from the normal state of things. However this will be just the lull before a return to the usual busy times for Crazy For You next March. Don t Stop The Music will be a chance for him to hear the company perform songs from shows that they are probably unlikely to perform in the near future due to the fact that these shows are still being performed in London or are on tour around the country. He hopes that you will enjoy this evening. Melvyn Fryer (Lighting Director) Melvyn started his involvement in stage lighting with the Harrow Light Opera Company where he progressed to a principal lighting role for some 20 musicals. One of his favourite productions during this time was Fiddler on the Roof. He has worked with various drama groups where he has lit productions such as Cat on the Hot Tin Roof. Melvyn was the resident lighting engineer for two years at the Maltings in Farnham where he lit touring productions as diverse as a Blues festival and an African dance production. He has designed the lighting for several local companies, one of his favourites being the contemporary version of Jesus Christ Superstar for CODY. He runs his own lighting and sound business and also delivers lectures on lighting to various 6th form and College students.

CODY MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY - Formerly known as Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society (CFAOS) HISTORY OF MUSICALS ON BROADWAY & WEST END The musical, as we know it, has some of its roots in the French and Viennese Operettas of the 1800s. The success of The Black Crook (1860) opened the way for the development of American musicals and the comic operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan (1871-1896) influenced later musical theatre by creating examples of how to integrate musicals so that the lyrics and dialogue were designed to advance a coherent story. Throughout the 1920s, the American musical comedy gained worldwide influence and tended to emphasize star actors and actresses, big dance routines and popular songs at the expense of plot. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote the innovative Showboat (1927) the most lasting hit of the 1920s. The Great Depression affected theatre audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, as people had little money to spend on entertainment. Many shows like The Band Wagon (1931) and Anything Goes (1934) continued the light-hearted song-and-dance style of their 1920s predecessors. In the 1940s Oklahoma! (1943) completed the revolution begun by Show Boat, by tightly integrating all the aspects of musical theatre, with a cohesive plot, songs that furthered the action of the story and featured dream ballets and other dances that advanced the plot and developed the characters, rather than using dance as an excuse to parade scantily clad women across the stage. During the 1950s, the music of Broadway was the popular music of the western world and great stories were adapted to modern day including West Side Story (1957) transporting Romeo and Juliet to modern day New York City converting the feuding Montague and Capulet families into opposing ethnic gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The 1960s would see a number of hits like Fiddler on the Roof (1964), Hello, Dolly! (1964), Funny Girl (1964), and some more risqué pieces like Cabaret, before ending with the emergence of the rock musical. Broadway audiences in the 1970s welcomed musicals that varied from the usual style and substance. Concept musicals were introduced (shows built around an idea rather than a traditional plot) including A Chorus Line (1974) and Chicago (1975) while No, No, Nanette (1973) initiated a slew of popular revivals, but by decade s end the battle line was drawn between serious new works like Sweeney Todd (1979) and heavily commercialized British mega-musicals such as Evita (1976). The public ruled heavily in favour of the mega-musicals, so the 1980s brought a succession of long-running Brit hits with huge budgets redefining expectations for financial success on Broadway and in the West End. In earlier years, it was possible for a show to be considered a hit after a run of several hundred performances, but with multimillion-dollar production costs, a show must run for years simply to turn a profit. Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon were heavy on marketing and special effects including a falling chandelier in The Phantom of the Opera and a helicopter landing on stage in Miss Saigon. In the 1990s, a new generation of theatrical composers emerged who began with productions Off-Broadway, one of which was Rent (1996), a rock musical about a struggling community of artists in Manhattan. While the cost of tickets to Broadway and West End musicals was escalating beyond the budget of many theatregoers, Rent was marketed to increase the popularity of musicals among a younger audience and other shows followed its lead by offering heavily discounted day-ofperformance or standing-room tickets. To start the 21st Century a new resurgence of American musical comedies took Broadway by surprise. The Producers, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Hairspray - funny, melodic and inventively staged, these hit shows offered new hope for the genre. Anxious to guarantee that they recoup their considerable investments, if not show a healthy profit, some took (usually modestbudget) chances on the new and unusual, such as Spring Awakening (2006), and American Idiot (2010). Most took a safe route with revivals of familiar fare, such as Fiddler on the Roof and Grease, or with other proven material, such as films Spamalot, Hairspray and Shrek or wellknown literature ( The Scarlet Pimpernel and Wicked ) hoping that the shows would have a built-in audience redefining Broadway and West End musical as a tourist attraction, rather than a creative outlet. Another trend has been to create a minimal plot to fit a collection of songs that have already been hits, these have included Movin Out (2002, based on the tunes of Billy Joel), Jersey Boys (2006, The Four Seasons) and Rock of Ages (2009, featuring classic rock of the 1980s). This style is often referred to as the jukebox musical. Similar, but more plot-driven musicals, have been built around the canon of a particular pop group including Mamma Mia! (1999, based on the songs of ABBA), Our House (2002, based on the songs of Madness), and We Will Rock You (2002, based on the songs of Queen). The future of Musical Theatre is uncertain but in an era of dazzling 3-D movies and stunning IMAX films, Broadway and West End theatre entertainment remains one of the most popular attractions in NYC and London.

THE MAKING OF DON T STOP THE MUSIC DON T STOP THE MUSIC Don t Stop the Music is a musical extravaganza celebrating the best of musical theatre through the decades, transporting us from releases in the 50s, onwards through the 90s and the noughties, right up until the present day. Don t Stop the Music has been a departure from the usual productions put on by Cody Musical Theatre Company (formerly known as Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society) and in return has caused further work from the production team. Rather than putting on a full musical it was felt a collaboration show would give Cody the opportunity to present a diverse programme of favourite song and dance numbers from some of the best-loved musicals not currently available for amateur groups to perform, bringing the West End to Aldershot. This show has many more songs and dances than a full musical show, which increased the work of the production team; therefore, a decision was made to have two Musical Directors and three Choreographers rather than the usual one. In the summer of 2014, the production team set to work deciding which musical numbers to perform and soon discovered issues due to some popular shows having many popular songs. With limited performance time, full length versions of these popular songs could not be accommodated and so it was decided a medley would work best. After many meetings and much deliberation a list of musical numbers was finally decided upon just in time for rehearsals to begin in April 2015. Workshop auditions were held for casting dancers and soloists, followed by note bashing to learn the harmonies, before movement was introduced creating the performance side of the production. Behind the scenes whilst the cast were busy learning lyrics and movements, the production team were holding further meetings to discuss set, costume, sound and lighting. With a limited set, compared to their usual productions, due to the diversity of the numbers, the onus was with lighting and costumes to create an atmosphere. Heavy admin has been involved for Musical Directors, Graham Hix and Paul Tickner, ensuring the cast and band have adapted scores / band parts for their arrangements along with rehearsal tracks to practice to. In early September 2015 everything was coming together nicely and a running order had been finalised; now there were just finer details to sort ready for opening night on 1st October 2015, such as what type of microphone to use in each number. With a lot of hard work and effort from all involved it looks to have paid off, for it s set to be a show stopper!

DON T STOP THE MUSIC ABOUT NODA National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) Founded in 1899, NODA is the leading representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. The Association has a membership of approximately 2400 amateur theatre groups and over 2000 individual members staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of venues ranging from the country s leading professional theatres to village halls. CODY MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY - Formerly known as Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society (CFAOS) OUR BRIEF HISTORY Cody Musical Theatre Company, formerly know as Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society, is a charitable organisation, which has raised since 1939 over 60,000 for local charitable organisations. Formed in 1920 and having a Dramatic Section, the Society became first known as the Royal Aircraft Establishment Dramatic and Operatic Society. The first musical production, performed in 1921, was a Chinese operetta The Golden Amulet. It was performed in the old RAE Concert Hall on the site of the present QinetiQ (formerly DERA) Assembly Hall in Farnborough. In 1929 the Society was granted the use of the Farnborough Town Hall which continued until 1940 when the Town Hall was taken over completely as a Civil Defence Centre. During this period the association with the town of Farnborough grew to the extent that in 1935 the Society was reconstituted as the Farnborough and Royal Aircraft Establishment Amateur Operatic Society. Although the Society was grateful to have a home, the Town Hall had its disadvantages; there was no way to cross backstage from one side to the other and no changing rooms for the gentlemen, who had to make do with a marquee erected behind the hall. This worked reasonably well except for the winter of 1932 when due to a heavy fall of snow the roof of the marquee collapsed. In 1940 the Society moved to perform at the Theatre Royal, Aldershot, playing to packed houses every night. During the very first production ( The Mikado ) the Air Raid Warning sounded and Pooh-Bah kneeling before the Mikado said Your Majesty, I have to announce that the sirens have just gone off. The audience responded with one of the most prolonged rounds of applause the Society has ever received. Needless to say the show went on! The new RAE Assembly Hall became available in 1944 and the Society returned to its original home again until the year 1973 when the Princes Hall opened in Aldershot. The first show put on at the Princess Hall was Fiddler on the Roof followed by a large number of equally successful and ambitious productions, demonstrating that the Society was in the front rank of amateur companies. The Society s achievements broadened further with critically acclaimed operas such as Jesus Christ Superstar (the Society being the only amateur company allowed to present the show in 1995, prior to its subsequent revival in the West End) and have been awarded many regional accolades of excellence by NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association), the most recent being for the 2014 production of The Producers. In 2001 the Members decided that it would be appropriate to change the Society s name to Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society in order to reflect its continued links with its historical home. The members then decided in 2015 to change the name to Cody Musical Theatre Company to move with the modern times.
