COMMISSIONED BY The commission o this work was made ossible by the Mizzou New Music Initiative, the Sinqueield Charitable Foundation, the Eta Usilon Chater o Kaa Kaa Psi, and the Zeta Omega chater o Tau Beta Sigma. Premiered by the University o Missouri Wind Ensemble Dr. Brad Snow, Director o Bands Dr. Brian Silvey, Associate Director o Bands Dr. Fuller Lyon, Assistant Director o Bands PROGRAM NOTE Embers is a little diicult to ut into words because it s artly about my dad s mental health, which has slowly been ading, and the grace that my mom has carried hersel with even as her 9-year marriage also ades. My dad s condition didn t diminish overnight; unortunately, it s been much more insidious than that, taking nearly ten years or anyone in our amily to recognize (or admit) that something in him seems signiicantly dierent. I don t want to share too much inormation here, because these issues are both incredibly ersonal and articularly comlex, but I do want to say that it has been kind o interesting (or lack o a better word) to watch my mom and mysel try to igure out the best way to try and hel my dad. (I think it s imortant to note that he still doesn t recognize that his behaviors have changed, which makes roessional diagnosis a challenge when theray and counseling are generally only voluntary.) And so we ve loved and suorted him as best we can, but I ve recently realized that ater all this time, my mom and I have sent a lot o time waiting waiting in sort o a hoelessly romantic way. We share the thought that maybe someday my dad will have a moment o sel-realization where he says to himsel, you know, something doesn t eel quite right. Maybe I should get mysel checked out. But unortunately, it s not usually that easy. My mom seems to kee saying, we ll see what tomorrow brings, but waiting or new symtoms to arise in order to seek any kind o medical or sychological treatment eels a bit like urgatory. So now I igure that i I don t know how to hel my dad, i I m stuck somewhere between simly loving him and strongarming him into counseling, maybe I can at least attemt to hel mysel and hel my mom make some emotional sense o our situation by taking all these comlicated eelings and exressing them in a iece o music.
