New York City!!! Well here it is. An amazing trip for an amazing group! Please note that all times listed are a best case scenario. By this we mean we plan our times and events carefully, but we re always at the mercy of things we can t control; things such as traffic and weather. KEEP THIS ITINERARY WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. It is your guide. Enjoy! BRING A SMALL UMBRELLA! Of course we hope for good weather, but we have to plan for rain too. There ARE times/places that you will be walking, REGARDLESS of the weather. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU needs an umbrella, small enough to pack in your suitcase. Please do not be the one who Mother Nature teaches the full lesson to! STREETS IN NYC: THE EASIEST SYSTEM EVER! It s easy to find your way in New York, as the city is on a grid system. AVENUES run north and south. STREETS run east and west. All locations/intersections are noted as in the following example: 5 Ave and 42 St. that s the intersection! If you need to find that intersection and you were on 4th Ave, then you need to go over one avenue to 5th. Once on 5th Ave, (let s say you were at 5th Ave and 30th St), start walking. If the next street is 31, then 32 you re walking the right direction to get to 42 St. If however, the numbers are decreasing (30, 29, 28 ) you re walking the wrong direction!) -TABLE OF CONTENTS- PAGE 1 PAGE 2 PAGE 3 PAGE 4 PAGE 5 PAGE 6 PAGE 7 PAGE 8 PAGE 9 Introduction DAY 1 - Wednesday DAY 2 - Thursday DAY 3 - Friday DAY 4 - Saturday DAY 5 - Sunday 9/11 Information Strawberry Fields Information The RULES Some things to think about! NOTE: We will have lunch and dinner on route back home. 9:00pm Approx. time back in Collingwood! 9/11 INFORMATION WHAT IS 9/11? 9/11 is shorthand for a date, September 11, 2001. That day, 19 men hijacked four commercial airplanes. They intentionally flew three of the planes into buildings: the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon, the headquarters for the armed forces of the United States, located just outside Washington, D.C. The Twin Towers ultimately collapsed because of damage from the impact of the hijacked planes. Hijackers turned the fourth plane off course and headed to Washington, D.C., likely to be crashed into the U.S. Capitol building. The passengers and crew aboard that plane fought back, and the plane instead crashed into an empty field in western Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed as a result of the 9/11 attacks, including people from more than 90 nations. WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL WORLD TRADE CENTER? The original World Trade Center was a 16-acre complex in lower Manhattan, a busy part of New York City. The World Trade Center included seven buildings, a large plaza, and an underground shopping mall. Thousands of people worked and visited there every day. The centerpieces of the complex were the Twin Towers. On September 11, 2001, the entire World Trade Center was destroyed. What were the Twin Towers? The 110-story Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in New York City. For a brief period, they were the tallest buildings in the world. They were called the Twin Towers because they were nearly identical. You could tell them apart, though, because the North Tower had an antenna on its roof. The towers were well known throughout the world and famous for their size. The North Tower, 1 WTC, stood 1,368 feet tall, and the South Tower, 2 WTC, stood 1,362 feet tall. On clear days, views could extend 45 miles from the top of 4 the towers in every direction far enough to see all five New York City boroughs, New Jersey, and Connecticut. WHY DID THE TERRORISTS DO THIS? The hijackers were terrorists, meaning that they used violence to try to frighten other people and impose a particular point of view. They belonged to a terrorist group called al-qaeda. The terrorists hoped that by attacking important buildings in the United States and hurting many people, they would force the United States into changing its foreign policy, especially in the Middle East. Why is the Museum located below ground? The Museum is located belowground because remnants of the original World Trade Center buildings are still visible below ground, and it is the Museum s job to preserve them so they can be seen by visitors like you. In addition to these building remnants, the Museum is filled with artifacts that help tell the story of 9/11. PAGE 6

STRAWBERRY FIELDS INFORMATION Strawberry Fields Located near Central Park West between 71st and 74th Streets, Strawberry Fields is a 2.5 acre area of Central Park that pays tribute to the late Beatle, John Lennon, singer, songwriter, musician and peace activist. John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono lived in the Dakota Apartments adjacently located to this area of the park. It was here, walking into his home, on December 8, 1980, that John Lennon was murdered and shot dead. To commemorate his life, talents and memory, on March 26, 1981, City Council Member Henry J. Stern designated this area, the couple's favorite in Central Park, as Strawberry Fields. Named after the title of the Beatles' song "Strawberry Fields Forever," the teardrop shaped region was re-landscaped by the Central Park Conservancy with the help of landscape architect Bruce Kelley and a generous $1 million donation from Yoko Ono. The iconic black and white Imagine mosaic, designed by a team of artists from the Italian city of Naples, lies in the center of Strawberry Fields. Named after another famous song by John Lennon, "Imagine" evokes a vision and hope for a world without strife, war and conflict. Additionally, there is a bronze plaque that lists the more than 120 countries that planted flowers and donated money for the maintenance of the area; they have also endorsed Strawberry Fields as a Garden of Peace. PAGE 7

THE RULES The following rules are mostly issues of common sense and basic respect for each other. By following these simple guidelines, the whole trip runs MUCH more smoothly! Thank you for adhering to these flawlessly. 1) When we are travelling to and from New York, we will have the opportunity to watch movies on the coach. You may bring a movie (DVD) if you wish, but DO NOT bring a movie that has inappropriate content or language. 2) Always be polite and respectful to our drivers, and make sure all garbage on the bus gets up to the front of the bus and into the garbage container. 3) Our chaperones have kindly volunteered their time to be with you. At all times, be polite and respectful to these people! 4) Staying in a hotel with your friends is a lot of fun. Having said that, you need to follow all basic rules of the Hotel, and absolutely respect that there are other guests there as well. We operate on the principle that you and your room-mates are fully responsible for each other. If there is a problem with one person in your room, we fully expect that the others in the room will immediately address the given issue before it needs the attention or intervention of a teacher or chaperone. Rooms that do not follow basic guidelines of respect in any manner will be subject to a loss of privilege of further sharing this room. 5) We are running some very long days with a VERY large group. It is absolutely imperative that everyone follow the times in the itinerary EXACTLY. DO NOT be late for anything. In fact, be 5 minutes early for everything! 6) In the evening, you will see two times listed. One is to be back in your own room. The second is for lights out. Please make no mistake as to what each of these sentences mean! 7) Make sure you have set a time/method to phone your parents during the trip. Phone calls cannot be made from your hotel room. 8) Be careful with cell phones in the States. DO NOT run data unless you have a plan. Airplane mode is your friend unless you want a monstrous bill. And finally, ALWAYS keep a positive spirit about you. It s contagious! PAGE 8

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT MONEY The cost of your trip includes the following: 1) All transportation by motor coach. 2) 4 Nights Accommodations at The Paul Hotel. 3) Broadway shows: Stomp, Mama Mia, Jersey Boys, and Phantom of the Opera 4) Guided Bus Tour 5) Madam Tussaud s Wax Museum. 6) Radio City Music Hall Backstage Tour. MEALS Meals are not included in the cost of the trip, as there are vastly different eating habits between all of you. Some of you eat very lightly while others of you are non-stop eating machines. With this in mind, we don t include the meal costs in the costs of our trip so that one person doesn t end up paying for another. This is the fairest approach to everyone on the trip. What you eat, you eat. What it costs, it costs. Here is a breakdown of the meals you will need to cover. THE FOLLOWING IS A GUIDE FOR A MEDIUM EATER. Please adjust as you see fit. NOTE: Please do any currency exchanging BEFORE you leave for this trip. All figures below are in U.S. dollars -6 Breakfasts @ $8.00 each -5 Lunches @ $10.00 each -5 Dinners @ $20.00 each MUNCHIES If possible, it's good to plan for $5.00-10.00 each day for munchies/drinks etc. Again, remember to think in terms of U.S. dollars. You may also pack munchies in your suitcase to bring with you. SPENDING MONEY This amount is totally up to each individual. Again, please think in terms of your needs in U.S. currency. PACKING LIST: CHECK THIS CAREFULLY!! 1) PASSPORT: DO NOT PACK IN YOUR SUITCASE. YOU NEED THIS ON THE BUS!!! 2) THIS ITINERARY! 3) Everything in ONE suitcase. (You can bring a small carry-on knapsack if you want.) 4) Canadian and U.S. $$'s 5) Raincoat/umbrella 6) Enough clothing to get you through the trip. 7) DVDs for viewing on the bus. NOTE: The weather in New York at this time of year is hard to predict. The temperature can typically range from 10-20 Celsius! Their spring temps are a lot like ours. The following numbers are to be used in an emergency only! Mr. Hamlin Cell: 705-444-9664 Mr. Bell Cell: 705-309-5057 PAGE 9
