K ING OF ANYTHING BY SARA BAREILLES Video Guide by Lauren Leese Special Thanks to Alyse Paquin for Cassie Yarnall Directing and Introduction: King of Anything is Emily Zaleski a powerful song about independence. Editing the film, as Sara Bareilles uses metaphors such as well as the Becca Lewis King and Crown to describe attitudes of bigotry and dogmatic approaches to life. Broadcasting Lauren Leese The song encourages a moldbreaking Department for mindset when it comes to others imposing their ideas of right and wrong. Our group your time and really enjoyed her original music video, and had a lot of ideas as to ingenuity. how we would alter it. Originally, we thought of connecting the themes of the song to fit a scenario depicting frustrations of the Deaf community in a Hearing world. However, we chose to keep the broad meaning of the theme intact. One of the first things are group unanimously agreed upon was that we wanted a Stepford Wives feel to our video. We didn t want to go overboard with a chauvinist mindset, but we wanted something different than all the songs out there with just a hint of attitude. I personally believe Sara Bareilles intended for her song to fit multiple contexts and yet still cling to that underlying message. In her music video, Sara creatively uses Poloroid s and film strips as well as vivid coloring to enhance her music. We really liked the boxy theme, and hoped to have each of us signing in a different square. Later, we added interactions between us in the squares which turned out fantastic. We kept with the vivid coloring by selecting a color for each of us, and then sticking to that color scheme throughout our video. The song s mood changes drastically after the bridge, and we came up with the idea of changing ourselves, physically, to show that. The beginning has us dressed according to someone else s mold. After the bridge we transformed into what we wanted [a President, a Musician, a Traveler, and a Scientist]. This was an immensely fun project that tested our signing and creative abilities. I m so glad to have worked with my group and the Broadcasting Department. I learned so much about the beauty and versatility of American Sign Language as well as aspects of Video Production.
